I've lived in Melbourne my whole life and think it's pretty much the best city in the world.

Ask me anything about living in the city that hosts the Aussie Millions.

I visited Melbourne once. I thought it was a great city but I can't comment because I was only there for a week. god I miss the poutine at lord of the fries.

Is racism prevalent there or not? When I was on the plane flying there from Sydney, it was on the news that Indian folks were getting beat up. This was in February this year.

Non indian folks sometimes get beat up too. The Indian racism story was a beat up by one of the local politicians trying to find a windmill to tilt at.

Yeah I found it a bit odd because I thought Australian folks carried out hate crimes against chinese folks. My apologies if this offends anyone but this is basically the story that gets spread around Singapore.

One of the supposed victims was later found out to have set himself on fire by accident while trying to torch his car to claim insurance.

This is pretty far from the truth, and I hope this isn't as widespread a rumour as you make out. Hatecrimes aren't really our specialty here. Sure we've got our fair share of bogan racists (like any multicultural nation), but I would hate to think people are shying away from coming here for fear of racism related hate crimes.

Most of the violence towards various Asian groups in this country are usually Asian on Asian. There's usually more to the story ie. drugs, gambling debts etc.

This was so epically tilting. Indian students all seem to live in the cheapest/roughest areas of the city, and then carry laptops/ipods/iphones with them in plain sight as they walk home alone from school/work through the deserted train stations and parks at midnight. Because nobody else is stupid enough to do that, Indian students are attacked in disproportionately high numbers and have only themselves to blame.

A great friend of mine is a cop in Sunshine where a lot of these attacks occurred, and said he couldn't believe how little commonsense these Indian students had in general when it came to matters of personal safety. One Indian student was attacked in a park where most people don't go during daylight, and this kid was walking through it alone at 2am listening to an ipod.

Anybody in that situation would be attacked, but it seems like it's only Indian students who put themselves in harms way. Racism? GTFO.

All of this. Footscray is an area that I would likely not ever visit because it's just full of scum and this Indian kid was wandering aimlessly through a park there at 2am. Any person, regardless of race, who had been doing the same thing would have been attacked by the same people.

Then there was another Indian guy who claimed racism when he actually was running an insurance fraud scheme and made everything up.

There are fights all over Melbourne and a large percentage of them likely involve other Australian's, but those ones don't get reported on. It was all just that typical sensationalist media ********.

I'd say it was the press in India that fueled the myth that Indians are any less safe than the rest of us.

Streets unsafe at night

Melbourne rocks because we use Australian dollars and $1 AUD = $1.01 USD

Did OP abandon this thread?

If I wanted to go to Melbourne for January-February, where in the city should I stay? How much is a furnished 1BR apartment per month? Do I need a car to get around in Melbourne or do they have decent public transport?

If I didn't know my way around Melbourne I would likely stay in the St Kilda area (About 5 mins from the city) or in the Richmond area.

There are likely furnished 1BR apartments for all types of prices. What sort of price range were you looking at? Here is a list of current places for rent in that area sorted by price (Highest to lowest). Use the left hand side to refine it by price.

You could easily get by without a car as there are heaps and heaps of trams within that area, but personally I like having a car.

St Kilda is more than 5 minutes from the city but is a very good area to stay in. Richmond is closer to the city just stay away from the Richmond football club. they dont have teeth and are likely to piss or spit on you

Try www.micm.com.au. They are the biggest inner city real estate agents, should be able to hook you up with a place anywhere you want. I lived in southbank for a few years. 5 minute walk from casino, 10 minute walk from city, close to everything. Highly recommended. For a 2 bedroom one bathroom fully furnished apartment i was paying about $2800 a month 2-3 years ago.
