Well you've outlasted most of the haters K2d.

Where are Paul B and Spiv these days? I don't see them around here anymore.

And seems like you might be turning lol69/trolol towards your side...and that water buffalo from way back when in Snooky is probably dead by now (rip water buffalo,) ...but you're still here.

So I guess that's something to be proud of.

is it simply a case of avoiding north jakarta? does this happen in other areas of jakarta too? is there a way to lessen my risk if going to the airport early in the morning again?
Yea,i heard your story before, that just a case of bad luck in my opinion.. remember,if you do nothing suspicious or crime..police got nothing to do with foreigners, immigration does..

North jakarta for some part is okay..but safer in south side..

Funny, I tought the one in green looked like a ladyboy. I think the one that we barely see wearing pink might be nice. Other one are fatties.

I think the two to the greens right massively look like ladyboys.

In any country i dont see how they can be top tier. Maybe top tier of the dude in the blue shirt but not actual top tier.

Top tier hookers under a certain price maybe??

lol sound theory

they probably weren't fake, probably could have got away with less then 300 though

know 2 girls there that have nice cars, they get stopped often, they generally pay 20k rupiah and drive off, sure a foreigner will be expected to give more, but 100 would have done the trick

But they're so rude, even more so than Thais, are you sure they'd call it in

Only to people in shorts (it's not really about shorts but yeah)

And 'ruder' not 'rude' cos lol we're still talking about a top 5 country in the world for niceness, if we're talking about the ease of getting into girls' pants

I'd say once you meet a minimum standard of presentation they respond more positively than other places

In poorer countries they're politer to people that dress busto (like you no offence) because it's more normal, and imo dressing well wouldn't really give any benefit only make you a target for overcharging, robbery, make girls uncomfortable, or other negative effects. or just neutral as they wouldn't appreciate it

But in Thailand since they're so image conscious and have a bit more money looking good results in more of a positive effect than it would elsewhere

6-8 men can't just stand conspicuously on a main road in a busy city and extort people. they were cops.

sure, because people generally don't have much money on them. i was expecting to pay no more than 100k rupiah and moving on.

the difference is i was on my way to the airport, i was carrying all my belongings (ie money and valuables), i look like a person who has money, he looked at my passport and saw i was up to page 30 (meaning i have the money and/or job that allows me to travel frequently).

he quickly surmised (correctly) that i could pay significantly more than the average mark.

Most of those "top tier club girl" pics I've seen are pretty gross. It's their attempt at looking like what they perceive to be a hot westerner, imo average girls are way hotter. Kind of like how all over Asia guys will go for a girl with really light skin no matter how she looks while most foreigners don't care about skin tone as long as the girl is hot.

So hand over 400k rupiah not $400 lol

Fake / corrupt police essentially the same thing, they're not doing police work. Police in Indo have nothing to do with foreigners for the most part, immigration does.

They wouldn't have taken you to the station that's always just an empty threat, too much paperwork for them to bother, they'd rather scam the next guy. And they wouldn't have 'ended up in a canal' either as you posted. And leave earlier if you have a plane to catch, aim for 2hrs before the plane leaves then you have a spare hour if something like that goes wrong.

ya there was no reason to start the bidding at $300, $100 would have made his eyes light up, you just thought 'oh **** im finally in trouble for carrying around way to much cash, ie making a huge travel noob mistake, and i better pay $300 so he doesnt take all $1500'

you guys can spin the thai stuff however you like, if people are going to be nice to you or not nice to you based on the way you dress when in non formal settings then they are rude people, or more rude then people that aren't going to become rude if you don't dress to their lofty standards

it really is amazing how this is difficult to figure out...... country A is nice to you no matter what, country B is nice to you only if you dress a certain way.... who has the genuinely nicer people?

he realised that since i had my belongings on me, since i don't look poor, since i travel frequently, since i had a plane to catch, i could be extorted for a lot of money.

of course they're not doing police work. they're looking to extort people. that's what corrupt cops do all over south-east asia.

i wasn't planning to jump on the back of a motorbike or getting in a car with these maniacs at 5am in the morning. they might take all my stuff and leave me for dead.

at 5am in the morning, they weren't going to get a better mark than someone with money and headed to the airport.

i was negotiating for about 15 minutes going back and forth, repeatedly pleading i didn't have anything close to 10 million rupiah on me (i had much more in actual fact), showing a little bit of money. it wasn't going far and the guy was becoming increasingly belligerent. i got out of the taxi at one point because i felt safer being in the open rather than in a position where a couple people could jump into the back of the cab with me. at one point when i was out of the car, he was trying to pay the cab driver to leave so that i would be stranded and completely at their mercy.

that's not a chance i want to take. if these guys are so brazen they'll extort someone for 10 million rupiah i wouldn't put anything past them.

they started the bidding at 10 million rupiah. they would never ask you for that much because they would think you wouldn't have that kind of money on you.
