Hitting up the Southern US for two weeks Hitting up the Southern US for two weeks

Gonna be in:

Charleston, SC (9th - 11th)
Atlanta, GA (12th-15th)
New Orleans, LA (16th-19th)
Nashville, TN (20th-22nd)

Since I travel solo, I rely on the kindness of strangers to socialize.

That said, anybody in those cities on those days up for something?

Eating southern food is like masturbating to porn. You get excited looking at the pictures, take pleasure in what you're doing only to hate yourself moments after finishing, wondering why you did it in the first place.

But you know that you'll do it again the next opportunity you have.

Charleston is remarkable, hopefully all the girls won’t have gone home for the holidays . Def do some history tours . I’m 2 hours north in Myrtle Beach . Lock your car in Nola . Just got back and it’s a very disturbing place .

Charleston was dead. Thought it was pretty good though not as good as people swear it is imo. Certainly don't regret going there. I'm in Atlanta now and am enjoying it more.

I don't have a car. I use a combination of walking, public transport, and Uber. No need to worry about break-ins.

What specifically did you find disturbing about NOLA?

How long were you there and in what area did you stay?

In October I spent a couple of weeks in NOLA and had a great time—rented an airbnb in Bywater for one week and an airbnb in Garden district for another week. Saw lots of great music and ate lots of great food. Had a car but rented a bicycle by the week and biked all over the city. Bicycling through Audubon Park, neighborhoods around Tulane and the Garden district was amazing.

A few times got lost and found myself bicycling in some very poor sketchy-looking areas.

I tend not to wander off too much and I can normally find my way around or ask for help. Not overly concerned about crime or danger.

Atlanta isn't heavy on tourist attractions but it's definitely an interesting city full of friendly people and has an underrated restaurant scene. Think I stayed a day too long though.

Do you have a list of things you want to do /see or any kind of itinerary for New Orleans?

I'm guessing you'll want to check out Bourbon Street, but honestly it blows.

I went to New Orleans on a class trip when I was 15. Of course that was pre-Katrina. So I don't know what it's like now.

I'm more interested in music, food, and history than I am drinking and clubbing. In Atlanta yesterday, I ate at Waffle House for the first time, had a sushi burrito for dinner, and then played D&D at a MeetUp for 4 hours. Good way to meet locals in the area and get a feel for what the people are like. It also helps to have people to see when travelling solo.

There's a WWII Museum that looks interesting. I wonder if a plantation would be an interesting or going out to see where The Battle of New Orleans was.

Really interesting trip. I've always been interesting in seeing more of the South and those are probably the exact cities I'd visit (while finding a way to add Savannah). I also have the same interests (don't party much) and tend to travel solo. MeetUp is a pretty great way to meet people.

I did a 3 hour bike tour with this guy https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...Louisiana.html and it was great. Loads of info. about Louisiana, New Orleans, Katrina, etc.. Doing bike tours is not his full time gig, however, so if you are unable to book a tour with him there are lots of other highly rated tour companies in New Orleans. However with the larger tour companies you never know which tour guide you'll end up with, presumably some guides are better than others. When you book w/ Big Easy you know you'll end up with Bob as he's the owner of the company and only employee.

Definitely stop by this place & order the BBQ Shrimp Po'boy https://liuzzasnola.com/menu/ It's not really a traditional Po'boy, but it was possibly the best thing I ate during my stay in NOLA.

In between Bourbon Street and Jackson Square is a small grocery / deli called Veri Marte https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...Louisiana.html Their Shrimp Philly Po'Boy was damn good.

Since you mentioned music, here's your guide to live music while in NOLA: https://www.wwoz.org/calendar/livewi...ate=2018-12-17

On Monday Dec. 17th George Porter Trio is playing @ The Maple Leaf, and Kermit Ruffin's is playing Treme Mother-in-Law's Lounge. You can't go wrong with either of those, though I'd go to the Leaf.

On Tuesday the 18th you've got lots of good options as well:
Rebirth Brass Band is playing @ The Maple Leaf (directly next door to The Maple Leaf is a great restaurant called Jacques Imos).
Treme Brass Band is playing @ DBA
Stanton Moore Trio is playing @ Snug Harbor

On the 19th this is the place you want to be:

Stayed about 15 minute walk from Bourbon st. The houses were nice , but every residence had bars over the windows. Downtown area was nothing but thieves and pick pockets . Two ladies tried falling down in harrrahs in front of my buddy and wife saying they were assualted . The place is straight up dangerous .

And I thought I was paranoid at night.

Anyway Bourbon St. is pretty overrated. I've seen better nightlife streets for cheaper.

The WWII Museum was pretty amazing though pretty expensive. I've been enjoying the cuisine and music quite a bit. Definitely a better experience than Atlanta and Charleston IMO.

I love New Orleans, but in all fairness to MrAdvantage he's not entirely incorrect; NOLA does have a crime problem, but it's mostly not in the tourist areas. The city realizes the importance of tourism, and the French Quarter in particular is safe.

Presumably you already know that Frenchmen Street is a place to check out at night for live music. Can easily walk their from the Quarter / Jackson Square area.

That's the case with most cities. Sao Paulo's crime is mostly restricted to favelas. NYC's crime is mostly restricted to parts of The Bronx.

I've been pickpocketed in the past. It was mostly my fault as I was extremely drunk and didn't notice my wallet was missing until two days later.

That coffee is indigenous to the area.

Walk down Decatur St. to City Grocery for a muffaletta if you have never had one.

Had a muffuletta. Toppings were similar to a hero sandwich though the olive salad was a nice touch. Bread was good. Thinner than a hero but not soggy either.

Also po' boys are overrated as ****. Come at me NOLA!

Try that BBQ shrimp po'boy I referenced earlier and then talk to me. That said, I ate a lot of po'boys during my most recent trip and most of them were OK to good, very few worth going out of my way to try again.

If you're into Vietnamese pho, I had one of the best tasting bowls of pho ever at a Vietnamese food place called T2 Streetfood inside St. Roch Market

My journey in NOLA is over. The food, the music, the history was all amazing. Definitely better than Atlanta and Charleston.

I have one final stop: Nashville.

For NYE I will be with my family. I'm not big on celebrating it. Just a small gathering of family and close friends.

As for hockey, Predators aren't playing the Rangers. So I'll have to pass.

Nashville is a pretty solid place. Fantastic breakfast place near where I'm staying. I think their hot chicken is a bit overrated. Had some at Hattie B's and it was dry.

City is really booming tourism wise. Gonna he flooded with tourists pretty soon.
