I see people sitting on the side of curbs drinking quite frequently. Also you can get beer to go at some places in a plastic cup. I think you are right though that it's not technically allowed, but nobody cares, and it's rarely enforced.

How depressing is it to live somewhere where it's cold for so long? I'm from the southern US so it would be a huge adjustment. I'm also a pretty thin guy so I would have the heat blasting for 8 months out of the year. How expensive is that?

When I rented, bills were included so I have no idea. But you're right, it is depressing. It's not that it's cold, it's that you get 6 hours of daylight in the winter. It's certainly the biggest problem with the country (plus I prefer my cities to be 5m+, not 400k)

It's not so cold and I think it's pretty 'good'. Then you know more how to enjoy the summer and the sun.

I think you little bit 'overestimate' our winter. It's cold but usually snowy months are december, january and februrary. Sometimes late november/march too. October/november is just wet and windy. March/april very light, snow melting and temperature raising.

Also in last 4-5 years we had some years that there weren't practically any snow. This winter was exception. Don't know why less snow maybe because of the global warming.

And in wintertime you always can get some cheap travel-packages to egypt, turkey etc (~€500-€800) for week to reload your 'batteries'.

EDIT: and you can always to move another parts in Europe but I think Estonia is good start. If u move to Estonia, I recommend todo in the summer.

And the winter before. When I moved there my plan was to do 3 months in Tallinn then go somewhere warm for the winter. Sadly I got trapped by the pretty girls and cheap beer and settled for an Estonian winter.

Hi all - never posted anything before - thanks for all the post - great info.
thinking of checking out either Tallin or Tatu for a month - anyone with an extra room that they want to rent out?

Or anyone know of a website similar to craigslist.com - where I can find a place to share for a month - thanks.

Don't know about rooms but check the main realestate websites: http://www.city24.ee/client/city24client? and http://www.kv.ee/ (both sites support english).

Dont know about Tartu but in Tallinn best zones are Kesklinn (centre) and Vanalinn (old-town)

I found this link which makes it sound like temporary residence permits may be somewhat easy to come by for non-EU individuals: http://politsei.ee/en/teenused/resid...come/index.dot

A couple quotes from the link:

"An alien may apply for residence permit, on the condition that the person's legal income ensures his or her subsistence."
"The number of aliens immigrating to Estonia is limited. The annual immigration quota is the quota for aliens immigrating to Estonia which shall not exceed 0.1 per cent of the permanent population of Estonia annually. The immigration quota does not apply to you if you are:
an Estonian;
a citizen of the United States of America or Japan;"

The second quote makes it sound like they are very willing to allow Americans in b/c they won't even count against the immigration quota.

just browsing through the travel forum looking for potential places in the future.. Estonia looks awesome.

couple q's - How hard is it just to show up in the country and try to live there for 3+months?? (by hard i mean finding a place, making connections, are there other poker players there, is it easy for foreigners to make friends w/out knowing the language?

Is there any mountains nearby for snowboarding? if anyone lives in Tallinn can give me a PM or if i could pick their brain on a few q's that would be cool and i'll repay the favor if i do come down

1. already discussed. If u are from EU then u dont need any residency.
2. finding place easy, use the sites what I gave few posts ago.
3. It depends what kind of person you are. I mean how friendly and social you are. If you are, then easy. if not then it's not and it was for every country.
4. lots of poker players here.
5. if you can speak english then easy - almost everyone speak english here. Also don't know why but non-estonians get girls easier than estonians.
6. Souther Estonia we have Estonian highest mountain but it's very small - 318 meters high.

PM for me to get skype/MSN info and we can discuss if u want.

Well, when it comes to Estonia Tallinn and Tartu are only towns worth living in IMO. I'm born in Tallinn and reside in Tartu ATM, and I must say I prefer Tartu. It's nice and cozy here, lots of young people, nice parks, plenty of cafes etc. I disagree that it's boring in summer. It's a matter of taste, really. Tallinn and Tartu relate to each other like New York and San Francisco, in a much smaller scope of course. Tartu has a population of 100 000, although thanks to University of Tartu and long history it's not what we call a "depressive small town". To sum it up, it's pretty cool here. Google it!

Really lots of poker players here. Even so, that we have our own football (soccer) team, FC Pokkeriprod. If anybody is interested in coming to Estonia and work out a bit then check out our team We are still learning to beat this game though, 1st season, we've gained just 1 point from 11 matches so far in the league.

I organise and captain it, so if interested, PM.

Someone also asked about Snowboarding opportunities. Here are some slopes with tracks up to 300-400 meters and height differential of about 80 meters but that is it. Many better opportunities in nearby Scandinavia (around 300-500 km from Tallinn) and in more distant Central Europe though. It also cost prolly way less than in US to go boarding many of these places.
