Most of the single moms I've met in China are far more aggressive than the normal Chinese girl. Either they got pregnant, decided "**** what society thinks I want the baby" or they decided "**** what society thinks I'm not happy in my relationship I'm getting a divocre." Either way they have that extra bit of whatever which makes them just not care about what others think. You can imagine what this type of person would be like... so to answer your question no they're not very defensive about sex. Also two of the most aggressive exes I had are both now single mothers. One tried to hold me inside her by grabbing my buttcheeks in an attempt to get her pregnant.

Also fwiw, as horrible as it sounds, a lot of married women are up for grabs too in China and in Asia. With a lot of arranged (or somewhat arranged) marriages and difficulty with divorcing so unhappy marriages etc. there's a lot of cheating go around and a lot of spouses don't even care.

True, a lot of people cheat. Chinese people almost never mention their SO unless you specifically ask them.

So been a while since a proper update.

Had the party Sunday night. As expected, the foreigners arrived first and drank a lot more than the Chinese, which was all girls. BTW, the vast majority of Chinese working in English teaching are women, so not the worst way to meet someone.


Here's the living room in prep. I made red beans and rice, which you can see on the left. That's a great dish for a party, since it's simple, filling, cheap to make and pretty damn good.

So I had a passionate debate with two friends about a couple topics last night.

the first was the future of English in China. They maintained that in the future everyone educated will speak English. I considered that complete lunacy. First, I'm not sure we had the same definitions. I mean actual fluency, ie, they can read the NY Times in the morning, attend a business meeting in the afternoon and watch the evening news all with 98% comprehension. This is the bare minimum we expect from an educated native speaker. I'm not even asking if they can write English without obvious errors every other sentence. Maybe their standards are lower.

What's the status of English today? Well, very low. Every year, Chinese schools graduate millions of kids who can barely hold the most basic conversation in English (like who are you, what are your hobbies kind of stuff), colleges produce graduates who forget all of their English within a year or two, they produce English majors who get flustered in conversation, and they produce English teacher like Kate, who have to watch Bojack Horseman and Two Broke Girls (both weirdly popular) with subtitles.

i'd say the percentage of the overall population who meets my standard in the low single digits. If we get more specific and say college graduates under 40, I'd still put it at less than 10%. I meet students every day who are smart, educated and accomplished in their careers who can't speak a tinkers' damns worth of English. Why is this? A couple factors:

Chinese education is ill-suited for foreign language teaching. Their methods are horrible, the teachers can't speak English themselves, the books are replete with errors, the student teacher ratio is 50 to 1, etc etc.

More importantly, Chinese people have a decreasing need to speak English. Unlike my friends, who seemed to see English as a corollary for development or civilization, I think needing to learn a foreign language is a sign of economic and political weakness, not strength. We all know the reason that English speakers rarely become fluent in other languages: they don't need to. English has become the dominant global language due to the British colonial legacy and and US economic power. Both those things are receding. We're moving into a multi-polar world rather than a hegemonic one.

The simple fact is that Chinese people don't (and won't in the future) need to be fluent in English to be successful (it helps, but 100% not required) And because of that, they won't learn it. Most Chinese aren't as obsessed with Western/English culture as some perceive. Yes, many like Bieber and that fat singer chick, but 90% of the media they consume is native. They don't have the internal desire to attain fluency. Contrast with smaller, economically weaker countries.

Our second debate was about the automation of labor, but I'll save that for another post.

I think that was pretty spot on PE. An unfortunate reality is that as long as the Chinese can buy and cheat their way into foreign universities and opportunities, there won't be much progress in English ability.

Sounds like you and your friends weren't arguing the same thing as you noted in your first paragraph.

Is is possible most educated Chinese will speak English? Yes

Is it possible that most educated Chinese will be fluent? No

yeah its possible, tgats the risk of drinking an arguing. I should have just said "speak English as wl as a Hong Konger" as a baseline.

So a common question girls ask their boyfriends (I've heard it referenced a bunch of times) is "if your mother and I fell into a river, who would you save first?" Imagine the kind of idiot someone has to be to honestly ask that question. Now imagine the kind of idiot you have to be to answer that question with something other than a slap.

This is a convo I had with a former co-worker, she had made some some like "if your mother falls in the river, throw me in too" because it's so hot.



My response was that fortunately my girlfriend has never (and would never) ask such an idiotic question.

On a related note, if you've been in China you've probably scene someone's girlfriend acting like a spoiled brat with her boyfriend-whining like a child, hitting his arm, stomping her feet etc. Some may not know that is is an established part of Chinese romantic culture, and (apparently) Chinese men often find it quite alluring. It's called Sajiao, and you can read more about it here. For me, the second time I met my gf it came up (or I worked it into conversation), I think we saw an example of it at the bar. I made very clear that I didn't find it cute-on the contrary it was a dealbreaker. I'm not sure if that influenced her behavior, she's independent-minded enough that she probably never did it anyway.

I think we discussed it months ago, but I'll say it again. 撒娇 is a big turn on for me.

The other thing we discussed was automation of labor. I strongly maintained that teaching was not going to be replaced by AI in the foreseeable future, due to the simple fact that human interaction is a central aspect of the teaching process. Students, whether they're aware of it or not, don't come to us because we have some knowledge (English or otherwise) that we can't get anywhere else. They come for the interaction. This includes things like encouragement, correction, small talk-really building relationships. Sure, **** teachers and test administrators could be automated, but who is going to write an essay about 'the AI teacher that inspired me"? ****ing no one. What really irritated me about this argument was that my friend who thinks that teachers are going to be replaced with has zero plans to ever do anything else. That's what made me think he was just arguing to be a dick than because he actually believed it.

I did some searches later on, and found that "education" was very low on every list of "jobs most likely to be automated", which made me feel somewhat vindicated.

speaking of trolling, my current favorite is to tell students that hamburgers are healthy because they balance meat, dairy, bread and vegetables. Theyre usually pretty flummoxed.
