I play 50nl-100nl. Looking to live somewhere for a few months, somewhere dirt cheap where I could live good, for about 1k-1.5k/month, somewhere exotic. I know of Thailand, but where eles would you guys recommend living?

preferably somewhere hot, with beaches

Really depends on what you consider, "living good". You can live on $1500/month in a lot of Latin America, but I don't know that you'd be, "living good".

Africa, I hear the locals live on like 1$/day. It's hot, I'd imagine there's beaches somewhere.

Cameroon.

i played on FTP w/ a dude who lives in camaroon. It was one of the coolest things ever. He was a super nit who played NL10 while I was making a vid.

AIDS rate is only 5.4% amongst young ppl. However, it is difficult to have an accurate stat b/c it often goes unreported.

40% christian. North africa has alot of mulsims. Though the french/italian dominated colonies have more western beliefs. Camroon might be considered central though, idk.

You can prolly fly to Sao Tome and Principe from there. Its very poor there, but if you wanan see a tropical island on a budget, you'll prolly get a bang for your buck.

afaik Gabon and Equetorial Guinea (to the south) are safe places.
Not so sure about the east (Congo, CAR)
Chad is not very stable either. Though I think the south west region of chad (the part bordering camroon) is reletively safe. That region is much more liberal and french influenced. Though there have been civil conflicts of the years in chad.

IDK why you would wanan visit Nigeria. Seemes like an overcrowded place w/ lots of scam artists. Though, I have not read/reaserched about Nigeria, so my views on it might be way off. I think Camroon is a cool country. I def wanna visit the region when I have the opporotunity.

If you jump over Nigeria, you will have several other safe countries. however.... IDK if you can play card there.

Ghana, Togo, Benin are all good choices iirc. Ivory Coast, Liberria, Sierra Leone would not be good choices. Cape Verde (tropical silands) is located around here.

For South America I would argue chile: safe, Santiago is a hughe developing buisness hub for SoAmerica. Mountains and beaches very close, way less rain than Brazil. beat: beaches have cold water.

Out of all the countries listed, I think you would feel most comfortable in:
Chile
Gabon
Cape Verde
Equetorial Guinea

Note: OP I'm in the exact same boat as you. I love warm climates and beaches. I'v looked at many tour books, websites, etc... just to understand what countries fit my criteria.

Bahamas, Hawaii, Gold Coast, etc... would be nice, but they are a bit over my budget.

jon voight, great comments........ i'm pretty sure congo is unstable and dangerous. i think there are two congo's too.

are you guys thinking of hanging out in africa for a few months and playing poker??....... i'm pretty adventurous (i started thread about central america), but most of africa seems a bit much..... and don't NOT go to nigeria. i know oil companies employees need armed convoys from the airport.

Some of this is right, but some of it is very optimistic. Nobody in their right mind would go to Chad or Equitorial Guinea to live for good lifestyle reasons--both are extremely expensive to live in a western style and are all around awful places. Cameroon is much better, but still not a cheap place to actually live--would be very interesting to travel through however, with lots of different types of scenery etc. Gabon is not cheap whatsoever, unless you want to live in the jungle (hint: you don't).

Nigeria isn't all scammers and militants, those are mainly in Lagos and the Niger Delta respectively. Still, the Muslim north is prob the nicest part of the country and yet nobody would want to live there. The south (Christian) is basically a series of massive cities with populations in the millions. Benin would be cool, but not carefree by any means; same with Togo. Ghana is better, but I doubt I would want to live there when push came to shove.

Really I don't think many places in SSA fit the criteria of OP. Also, the realization that "dirt cheap" doesn't really describe most of Africa is important.

so do you feel Asia and s. america are more practical?
also is s.e asia and s. America really that much cheaper?

i think my dream country would be Australia during the summers. are there any cheap coastal regions in Australia?

SE Asia and South America will probably be a lot better. For the cost of living to be very low, you need places with a reasonably large middle class. Otherwise, groceries and manufactured goods will be totally geared towards the upper class and very expensive. The developing countries in the Americas will be cheap to varying extents, with the exception of Haiti, which is very expensive.

I aggree, Cameroon is not that cheap at all. If you want to leave in the ghetto parts of Douala it won't cost you much, but if you want a decent place to leave with "western" hygiene standards it will be a bit costly. Also, food, restaurants, bars or cars prices are almost as high as in europe. A friend of mine was working there as an expat there and did not make sh*tloads of money while living as a petroleum king, as some would have expected.

That said, Cameroon is an awesome country to visit for vacation. I went there for 3 weeks and really enjoyed it. People are very nice, scenaries absolutly awesome, you can hang out in the beach as well as doing some safaris with elephants deep in the country, trekking in mountains, etc. Parties and discos are also great in the cities, and the country is pretty safe compared to its neighbours.

john voight--I forgot to adress Cape Verde. That is actually a good idea imo, and a country I have always wanted to check out. In a decade or two it will probably be a big tourist destination.
