Living next to downtown isn't a big perk unless you work or study there. Otherwise you're paying a location-based premium for a location which isn't actually close to the places you will be going most frequently.

Noise can be avoided by searching for apartments that don't face the street, especially on lower floors. Safety isn't a concern in almost any part of Palermo or Recoleta, and it's pretty easy to figure out what the exceptions are and avoid them.

I may be going to BA for a few months at the end of the year. Looking at AirBNB rentals in Palermo area and they seem cheap enough ($500-900/month depending on how nice it is). Any advice/tips? Sounds like bringing cash and exchanging on the street is better than withdrawing pesos from the ATM. Would be attending spanish classes most weeks and possibly working on learning dancing and would like a decent gym nearby. I know there are a lot of parks in Palermo which is also a plus.

Are you looking to rent a room or an entire apartment? You're not getting an apartment for $500/month. I used to use www.bytargentina.com to search for places since they had the largest selection and the best prices and good service, but that was before Airbnb existed so I don't know which would be better now. I'd guess that ByT would still be better, and at first glance their cheapest 1 bedroom offerings are cheaper than the cheapest that I see in Airbnb, but you'd have to take a closer look to see how they compare on quality.

If you want to rent a room then I'd recommend www.compartodepto.com over Airbnb. It will be more of a hassle for you, but the prices are (for the most part) actually fair market value rather than the tourist rates on Airbnb. Just don't get too carried away trying to save money or you'll find yourself in a place intended for broke college students.

Gyms are everywhere.

Likely an entire studio/apt. Seems the nicer ones are $900/month but thought I saw some much cheaper. Will definitely check out that site. Your assumptions seem to make sense. I'm trying to be frugal, but safe. Nicer is nicer but not essential. No need to slum it based on what I've seen.

Concur that cash then changing money on Florida Avenue is superior to ATMs?

Yeah, definitely avoid ATMs. If you go to Calle Florida then first check the current rate as reported by a site like www.lanacion.com.ar (the dropdown thing in the blue bar near the top of the page) and shop around until someone makes you a good offer. I don't have much personal experience but I'd be shocked if people aren't lowballing you left and right.

Renting a furnished apartment for $900/month in Palermo you'll probably find something that's adequate but pretty spartan. Buenos Aires has a really weird rental market and a lot of the furnished apartments are targeted at exchange students and "English teachers" rather than business executives - so even in the best neighborhoods there are a lot of rentals available that are really quite drab.

I have read several articles about how popular bitcoins are in Argentina. So that might be an option for money transfer. Buy bitcoins and you can get cash for them. I think there is entire building of people who do this.

Creamfields is not what it used to be, so I'm not going this year. But you'll have a great time depending on your line up selection. Try to avoid Main Stage :P

We're heading back to Brazil in May and we've decided to check out the deep south this time.

I'm actually going to plan our trip around a rugby game (trollololol) in Buenos Aires, but would be open to any suggestions for things to do ranging from day trips to a few days. Maybe as long as a week.

One other thing on my "interested" listed is one of those mega asados... where can I go to get me some of this?

I'll go back and read this thread, but thought I would drop this question in here.

Bonus question:

Can anyone advise on "good" areas to stay for 2-3 nights in BA? The game I mentioned above will be played at estadio velez sarsfield, so having that easily accessible would be a bonus.

Otherwise we quite like "casual" night life. Live music, casual/street bars and dining.

Accommodation budget is probably in the range of USD$100-150/night.

If it makes a difference, my Spanish is all but non-existent and my wife's is probably basic/functional but not conversational.
