Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Well, we made a good run in a $1.10 PKO, and ended up busting in 70ish/3561, which only translates into like $3. Tournaments such a morale killer sometimes. 3-bet A5 on the button, flop comes A5x against super aggro guy who is just open ripping like 50bbs, and we bet 1/3 flop and get shoved on by the guy with A7o and he rivers 2 pair which cuts us down to about 15bbs. Not long after, we open 77 in MP position with about 18bbs and this guy comes over the top with A7 from button, and he hits an Ace on the flop and we are drawing slim.

Trying to definitely stay positive, and understand it's the nature of the beast. I understand the thread took a nosedive after the FF stuff, and am hoping to get something going so there can be some momentum in it. Slowly, but surely.

Cheers everyone,

-Boris

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Hey All,

OK - Serious, the thread is back on track now. I was quite sick for the last month, also the holidays and then Chinese New Year. So, about 1 week ago I said eff it, we doing it right, and I put $50 on ACR, and $50 on PS (like 3 days ago). Well tonight, we chopped the Hot $4.40 for $1310 (1st place money). Also, ACR roll sitting at over $200. Also my BetOnline roll, from running up freerolls is at $70. We getting at it.

The last 4 days or so I think I've been playing pretty damn good poker. Taken down a few PLO tournaments ($1 buy-ins) on ACR, a NLH, and just overall making good decisions. I was apprehensive about loading up Stars today, but decided to just go for it and won a .60 cent satty or something into the Hot $4.40. I don't know what to say other than we ran really ****ing pure. Quite a large chiplead going into FT after opening KK on button and getting rejammed against ATo. At FT, rejammed TT to button shove against KQ, and soon we were 4 handed and chopped it up, ultimately taking 1st place money.

It's good to be back, and I have some good stories to get at about Taipei. Looking forward to the Year of the Cock (Chinese New Year) and sharing it with you party people.

Best,

Boris

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

I told you we back. Pretty laid back day playing today, as went to bed quite late, but managed to take down the 200 GTD 8-max on ACR. Would say it was rather straight forward and chip-led most of the tournament, and HU actually lasted quite a while, after barreling 3-streets with air and getting looked up by 3rd pair. But, able to recover after rivering a boat and x/raising to essentially end game.

I have a few good Taipei stories, will post them if interested, or will post them even if not interested. Chirp in if there is anything in particular you want to know about!

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Went to see John Wick 2 with some buddies after work today. Loved it, some good cliches, but the action was great. Didn't feel mentally great to load up some long tournaments, so I played some .20 cent $20GTD on BetOnline. Took that down out of 97 players for $14.55. I know it is minor, but I figured building towards my BOL roll on a down day is still a good plan. BOL roll now at $84.

Didn't even realize tomorrow was Valentine's Day after asking a girl to hang out. Looks like I need to pick a fight between now and 8pm tomorrow so I don't have to go on that date. Will explain the female situation in a later, detailed post.

Be great,

Boris

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

A little check-in. This is definitely a random stream of consciousness and not too poker related.

I'm doing a sober February, and two weeks in, it's going quite well. I think at 26, I feel like my life gets out of my hands sometimes, and I get caught up in all the commotion, leading to some indiscretions that I never am too proud of. I think I'm doing this to prove to myself that I still have some sort of will-power. I also think it is balancing out my lifestyle. Considering before, all I was doing is working, getting home, sleeping, repeat, Friday going out, Saturday going out, Sunday self-loathing, rinse and repeat. I wasn't being productive with poker at all. I've been studying an hour or so a day on top of things. Chinese New Year took a big toll, mentally and physically. La Familia Blanca was in town, my Hong Kong boys; namely Esquire, The Golden Eagle, Fisherman (still here), and Kubla Khan. We drank heavily each night, hit some 6am massage parlors, but were also super productive. Hiking Yangmingshan, Elephant Mountain, and biking 40km one Saturday out to Dan Shui, so the Golden Eagle could see the fort his Spanish ancestors built.

I've been hanging with a few girls, two more seriously than the others, but still not mildly serious on the grand scheme of things. One of the girls is a huge drinker, and it is actually quite embarrassing, as I think she might be a chronic alcoholic. Pretty sure I watched a mosquito bite her and then check itself into a Betty Ford clinic. I'm not exactly sure how to address it with her, but a handful of times, a shopkeeper has made a comment to her that he hopes she isn't driving because she reeks. She also chain smokes cigs and definitely has run the foreign circuit in Taipei many a time. I'm in a bit of a conundrum, because she is a sweet and thoughtful girl, and I've definitely been using her as a crutch to talk to on the phone, to cure my own loneliness I might feel in Taipei. I will also say that I don't even enjoy having sex with her, so I'm not sure what I'm holding onto. Living abroad can get lonely, and I'm still trying to figure out how to remedy it. Hong Kong was fine because my father was there, but Taipei is much different. I think I might try and just go for a chaste March, or only hit up massage parlors, because I'm wasting money and time hanging with women I only sort-of want to be with. I had a friend set me up with a really sweet local girl, who definitely doesn't run the circuit, is just a great person, and was a great time. Her English was ****, so it was refreshing to actually use my Chinese, instead of hanging out with girls who think their English is great, when it's atrocious and I have to listen to squawking all night, instead of just using Chinese, which would be easier for both. I think my type is definitely the girl next door, time to ditch the gweilo-rats and meet the Mary Jane Watsons of Taipei.

I won't get into much about work, other than that it is going much better, and it definitely helps feeling like there is a little momentum with poker.

This week is a bit up in the air, as we have to work on Saturday, so I don't know how much Boris time I'm going to have. Sunday, I'm going to Wulai Hot Springs, where I booked a private room with your own personal hot spring, and overlooks the river/hot spring. Hoping to make Wednesday and Friday a Boris day. When the mojo is flowin,' don't let it stop.

Anyways, felt like I needed to write a bit, as I have missed the regularity of the blog, especially playing live and reporting on it. The goal would be to get the roll to about $5,000 and start taking semi-regular trips to Manila to play, since flights are dirt cheap, and I can play Star Casino.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Went to Wulai Hot Springs (South of Taipei) for the weekend with a female friend, so didn't play much. Took a remote working day today, and fired up a few tables, bricked mostly everything, ended up 2nd in some $20 GTD on BOL --> So BOL Roll is now at $96.

Stars: $1335
ACR: $260
BOL: $96

4 day weekend coming up, and I've sworn off meaningless encounter for a productive, Boris-time, weekend.

Bigger updates coming soon.

Be great,

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

I realize there isn't much structure currently with the blog - as I jump to poker sometimes and reflect on other things separately. So, I think it is probably time to build a tangible goal to work towards. Still hope a few of you are reading and enjoying the unstructured life that is Boris.

To start --> Current bankrolls are:
Stars: $1335
ACR: $260
BOL: $93

Total: $1688.

A reasonable goal, with no timeframe in mind, but hopefully within a few months, is to get the roll to $5,000.

1. Roll from $1688 --> $5000
2. Trip to Manila for live games
3. Get back into online cash games
3. No AIDs

Feel like I haven't been playing great lately, so am trying to take a bit of time to study. 4 day weekend coming up, so I'm going to try and put in some good volume. I haven't played cash games in quite a while, so am a bit apprehensive and not feeling that confident in my game, so ideally after I get it over $2500, I'd like to start mixing in a little bit of cash. Cash was always a tool for me to correct tourney bricks and keep the roll level.

I hope the blog can still serve some familiarity for persons who struggle in life with finding a proper balance and slip up occasionally with indiscretions, and let them know that there are other people out there trying to strike that same balance.

If anyone wants a story: Here are a few options, without giving too much away -->

1. Mamasan machete
2. Shanghai Street sex
3. 18 Sauna (Macau)
4. Something sappy
5. Yayo and friendships

-Boris

Ps. How does one go about telling a girl she has the stinkiest vagina and she should get it checked out? As Danny Brown says in 1 Train, "***** pussy smell like the penguin, wouldn't hit that **** with my worst enemy's penis." It really has gotten to the point where I just act like a married spouse of 30 years when asked if I want to have sex and just tell her I'm tired or "not in the mood."

P.P.S. Getting a high class call girl like every two weeks has got to be more +EV than going on meaningless dates with girls right?

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Hey Kenny and All,

Thanks for the advice - ideally, I'd like to play in Macau, just the fact that the stakes run a bit higher and I think min they run there is $25/50 HKD, so first starting off, I think Manila would be a little more within the roll. Also, going to Macau, inevitably I'd be stopping in Hong Kong and seeing some of the boys and probably spending way too much there. Then again, what I may spend on booze in Hong Kong, may be spent on Filipina whores in Manila. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

One major thing, that I don't think I addressed really is that I took a sober February. And, I made it. Somehow. Sitting at work, today on March 1st, I don't have an urge to drink and am dreading ruining the progress of the mental clarity and sharpness I feel currently. This weekend should be interesting... (ominous music)

So the weekend went alright, it was relatively break-even, made a few deep runs, namely in the $20k Splash, finishing like 30th or something. I actually got back into playing some PLO cash, so I think during the week, that might be what I focus on, since I can only handle so much after work. This weekend really put me in the mindset that I need to build a financial net of sorts and focus on that. Although the rolls relatively stayed the same, there was a lot of volume put in, and felt pretty good about it.

Stars: $1300
ACR: $300
BOL: $100

On a side note; I had a talk with both of the women I've been hanging out with, and made it clear to both that I need to take some time to focus on myself and don't want to continue things further. It is never fun to hurt a good person, but sometimes cutting something off before both get in to deep is the only way to prevent an even worse hurt.

Also, had a good boys night over the weekend, going to Shilin Night Market. I think it's the biggest night market in Taipei, and some people aren't a fan of it because it is so crowded, but I love it. Have been quite a few times, and every time I find something new every time. Night market food power rankings with pictures coming soon.

Well, you asked for it, so hopefully it delivers...and it may be a little depraved. I also am not particularly proud of all my past indiscretions, but think they all have served some purpose, so I figure they are worth sharing.

Shanghai Street Sex:

My worst nights in Shanghai always started with all you can eat and drink Japanese for something like $20 USD. The first time, my friend found me passed out in the park near our apartment where all the stray cats hung out and ****, the second time, I had a machete pulled on me by a Mamasan at a hooker bar (that's another story), and the third time, well that's what I'm about to tell you.

It was an interesting crew. One of my good buddies, Big Lip, a country boy from Ohio, who was always internally conflicted due to his traditional family upbringing, but love for booze and asian women. I have never seen a man with such a white guilt before. Big Lip, became one of my best buds, but unfortunately over the years, after his early marriage to a Chinese woman and descent into the unglamorous ex-pat life in Shanghai, we have lost touch. Second on the roster we had Sims, a kind of weasely, pimple faced kid from Haverford, who I don't really know what purpose he ever served. He kind of just existed and floated on the outside, always the one trying to take home the drunkest woman at the bar. Finally, there was Dobbs, a nerdy, articulate, future politician. Dobbs was just a straight up good dude. Very bright, cynical, and an overall pleasure to be around.

Well, to cut to the chase - we were thoroughly blitzed and ended up at some dive-ish bar where some scantily-clad woman was performing acrobatic twirls on a red rope for the whole bar. There is a quite well-known type of massage and "service" with the red-rope in Shanghai, where a woman hangs from the ceiling off a red rope and is able to blow you while spinning around. I've always sought it out, but never found it. At the time, it seemed the cool thing to smoke cigarettes, so we all went outside to suck down a few zhongnanhais we had brought down from Beijing. I used to have a terrible habit of taking out basically the bare minimum at the ATM, so would always find myself borrowing money from Big Lip. He eventually just accepted this.

Out on the street, a big busty, mid 40s Chinese hooker walked by, with the standard sales pitch, and I spun around, yelling out, "show me your boobs," to which she happily obliged. In that minute, the fates had decided for me. Dobbs, in a sheer act of sexual frustration, looked at me and said, "I need this right now." Dobbs had gone the last 5 or 6 months being friend-zoned by this ****ty liberal arts girl we knew, and had finally realized it was for naught. Knowing that where there is one shark, there are surely others, I asked this worn down street mamma jamma if she had a friend, to which she told me, "no problem," and signaled for her petite friend across the street to come over. I gave Dobbs the pick of the two, and he chose the small one. Our apartment was 45 mins or so away, so we asked if we could just get it done in a back alley. I looked at Big Lip, shrugged, and told him I'll pay him back, to which he told me, "No need, if I can watch."

Side note: I don't know why I really mentioned Sims, other than I just wanted to get it into print that I thought he was slimey and weasely. He ended up going home right as we were negotiating.

Now, upon further reflection of the incident with Big Lip many years later - he compared it to being the director of a porno. Depraved in his own way. Is the man orchestrating all the paid for sex and lechery just as at fault as the man doing the act himself? In their own way, both parties are guilty. We found what we thought was a secluded area of the street and got down to business. With Dobbs leaning against the wall of a building, and me bending mine over in the middle of the street. Looking back, I was too drunk to realize how weird it was that Big Lip was watching with the most intense look ever and biggest grin on his face. At one point, he tried to tell me what to do while having sex with her, which I probably should have listened, since it was his money after all. Our fun was interrupted after hearing a loud clanging noise and a man yelling in Chinese, "what the **** are you doing?" It took a second to process, until a building doorman came running out with his flashlight, shooing us off like beach seagulls.

Not wanting to end the night, we headed back to the apartment with the girls to finish up there. Kind of cringey to think but I made Dobbs sit in the front seat of the taxi while I sat in the back with an arm around each hooker. We got back and finished up, to which I heard an absurd high-pitched yell from downstairs where Dobbs was taking care of business. It was such an alarming yell, that I ran downstairs thinking it was one of those situations where I was going to find a dead hooker and Dobbs. I dare not say luckily, as I don't consider myself lucky, but it was just Dobbs releasing 6 months of pent up frustration and I ended up catching sight of much more of Dobbs than I would have ever liked. Although it promotes distrust with your hooker, I always used to ask to search their bag as they were leaving my apartment. Well, as one would expected from a fake-tittied, mid 40s Chinese hooker, I found my old IPod (the one that is about the size of a brick and barely functions) in her purse. I got into a bit of a verbal argument over her trying to steal my crappy IPod and docked here $50 kuai from the original price of $200, so the total encounter only cost about $150 kuai, or about $20 USD.

The next few days were pretty laid back, and I was questioning some of my moral choices. But, Dobbs came up to me and told me how it was exactly what he needed, so I think it was an overall success. I have messaged Dobbs exactly once a year since this incident took place (over 6 years ago), typing the same thing each time, "I still remember what you did that summer," to which he never responds.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

12th in the Big $1.10 last night --> Definitely punted a tad when down to final 15 and was top 4 stack.

Also, may have some super strain of gonorrhea and chlamydia, on the meds now, getting better. (Joking about the super strain). But on STEED meds. Tough being a thoroughbred. Piss looking like I ****ed Chester the Cheetah from the Cheetos commercials.

Literally the same bankroll since posted last. Been playing well-ish, but not closing out. My dirty dick will keep me in this weekend playing. Wondering what point I just switch to cash and give up the tournaments.

I think I've dropped this quote before, but it's relevant to my current situation.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Another deep run tonight, but no bueno. 13th in the $16.50 bounty builder. Went from 3rd or 4th in chips to out in 13th, probably a punt of sorts, but ended up quite strange after I 3-bet with Aces in MP, an EP open, button flats. EP tank calls. Flop J63cc, I hold Ac. I try to type out a little over 60%, and end up betting 10% of pot, button flats, and EP makes small raise, to which I think I got trigger happy and thought it was due to my accidental sizing, and rerip over it, he snaps with jacks, and we brick. Good lesson to learn.

With bounties and cash --> $375ish.

At it again tomorrow.

Best,

Big Body Boris

Kiljusie: Appreciate the comment, I think people who are also living in Asia relate to musings about it, that's partially why I kept this going. (As I see you are in Thailand).

I just had something typed up trying to justify myself, but I think it's clear to all that from the beginning of this, it was pretty candid about what it was. Not high strat or high level, just a nino from New Hampshire sharing his thoughts and worries while trying to find his place.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Thanks Kenny! Glad you still checking out the thread.

I know quite a small sample, only 2k hands, but just been getting back into cash lately to get a feel for things. Just playing 5PLO and 10PLO and trying to put in 30k hands before moving up. Rolled for higher, but with not playing cash in a while, I feel like I need to play quite lower first to try and get back in the swing of things. Most likely taking a thrashing once I play above 50PLO. But alas, everyone needs a good spanking now and then, so I may be due.

I'm also thinking that as it seems I'm not as frequent with poker updates and as goal oriented with others - that maybe it would be best if I requested a Mod move this over to Travel, and then things might fit a bit better. It seems like there is a decent sized community in Asia, and possibly people who have questions about moving over. I also think I'd start taking some pictures and writing more about general life in Taipei/Taiwan. Thoughts?

Hope everyone is well, even you Links

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread

Appreciate the comments Kenny. You were in the South then yeah? I still haven't been down that area and need to go. Was supposed to go to Hualien for CNY, but with the boys in town, productivity was low.

Trying to move the thread over to Travel.

Made a few deep-ish runs lately, but no cigar. Just been playing a few hands of PLO. Obviously not a sicko with volume like a good amount of people on here, but here is updated PLO graph.

The last few weeks I've been pretty asexual due to the penis problems, but it's almost like being able to see again for the first time once it clears up and you are back to new. The results came back and just a UTI, but on Boris's pain threshold power ranking, a UTI shouldn't be more painful than chlamydia or gonorrhea. But, that's just my power ranking.

Planning on going to Tonghua Night Market tomorrow and taking some pictures for the thread to show my favorite night market foods that are near me.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread in Taipei

Hey All,

Feels good to be in Travel. I decided to move my thread over to Travel because it never really was the most goal oriented, and I think the crux of it hinges off of just musings about Asia.

For those who are seeing this for the first time (due to being moved to Travel), feel free to ask any questions you have about Taipei, recommendations, etc... and I'll be happy to answer and write about them, even go explore and take pictures.

As mentioned in previous post, going to Tonghua Night Market Tonight (Xinyi District), right next to my home, and will try and take pictures of what I get.

Best,

Boris

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread in Taipei

As I said I'd post pictures of Tonghua Night Market, I just can't in good conscience do it today. The pictures I took were literally so bad, that you wouldn't even know what you are looking at. Going to have to go back this weekend, since it's 2 mins out my doorstep.

Last night, just kind of relaxed, played an $11R, got 6th for $113. I'm definitely a huge bonehead who needs to learn ICM considerations, as there were 2 noticeably short stacks.

Probably getting at it a bit tonight drinking-wise, as it is St. Patty's and the office has an alcohol budget to which the fridge is stocked with Guinness and a few bottles of whiskey. No women in my life currently after letting the main two go, and just stopped talking to the random ones. Time to forge a new roster. Always tough when you've put on a few and haven't been that social in a while. Still have that very sweet local girl in sights, but nothing really happened yet.

Side note: had bought a bunch of Ethereum back in March-ish, 2016. Kind of just let it sit, and today sitting at about $54/ETH. Buddy messaged me on FB telling me to check my ETH, as I was pretty disenchanted after reading some articles about it, and almost dumped it about 2 months ago. Always nice to be surprised by it, hoping Ripple catches on a bit more with more banks, as I pumped a bit into that. Let me know your thoughts on Ethereum and Ripple if you have any.

Also, current bankrolls at:

Stars: $1650
ACR: $330
BOL: $105

Need to start playing BOL a bit more, since I think their tournaments are quite soft and small-ish fields.

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread in Taipei

This is a good thread and im sad i just now realized it existed.

Isnt it funny how you get that feeling of anxiety when taking a hiv test, say to yourself "never again if i pass". Then go out for a night boozed up take home a hooker and once again have unprotected sex and put yourself in that same spot again.

Too be fair Yellowfever, I just transferred this over to Travel, and was wading the dregs of PG+C, where I wasn't much of a goal chaser.

And the fact that you are so self-aware when sober about it, but throw all inhibition out the window after a few drinks. It really is masochism, and the fact that I think coming from a privileged life, I just deep down feel like I'll never be that statistic, but am so bored in my life that all I fixate on is that 1/10000 chance I'm a statistic.

I'll post a few other stories about it as well. Glad to have you on board Yellowfever, I see you're in Thailand. Mentally, I don't know if I can ever return haha.

In general i try to use condoms for most my P4P encounters. Sometimes i just dont give a *** cause of being drunk or the girl is so hot im just like its worth it. I think to myself if she dont say to use one im just going for it. Thats how i caught the clap that same mentality lol.

The last time this happened to me was last week when i was on a week long degen binge in Pattaya. Took a girl home from insomnia night club and she spoke like no English. She was pretty hot and im just like ok going for it. Then wake up in the morning like *** shouldnt of done that ah well not using one now since we already did it. Then shes says she has to go to work around 12 that morning after we do it. i ask where she works she says Soi 6.

Not sure if you know soi 6 but yeah its a street with alot of monger traffic! Not the place to be rawdogging a girl on the first night thats for sure. Going to be watching my dong for the next week to see if anything funny is going on thats for sure.

Would love to read some more degen stories from your Asian adventures. I'm always interested in hearing about the Asian countries i havent been to. Anyways have fun out there!

Re: Boris's Poker and Life Thread in Taipei

G2a: I'm sure many 'penis checks" await. With the Ippudo boys in Hong Kong, whenever we are in a big group, because most of us are at the clinic every few months, someone will randomly yell, "Penis Check!" To which we will all stand to attention like in the military. Child-like I know, but it keeps us entertained. Enjoy the travels in PH, hoping to start going to the casinos in Manila in the next few months.

Yellowfever: We might be the same person just writing from different 2p2 accounts. I imagine something with "Soi" in it is standard throughout Thailand, as my buddy and I went to Soi Cowboy in Bangkok, and it was ripe with sin.

Will type up some more random stories soon. On a poker note, roll is increasing. Took down some $1k GTD on ACR last night for about $300, and had just some random consistent cashes in Stars.

Stars roll: $1700
ACR roll: $605
BOL: $200

Didn't make it back to Tonghua tonight, as went to just a local buffet place, where you get a ton of rice, vegetables and meat for quite cheap. Want to do Tonghua justice with pictures. Just taking it easy tonight and prepping for tomorrow.

One thing: went out with the coworkers for St. Patty's day because I never go out with them or really hang out with them. It wasn't that fun, and in Asia, you definitely get these people who make their work friends essentially family and their whole life. A lot of my coworkers seem baffled that I don't want to hang out with them 24/7. Also, there is always that one coworker who says they are cool with everything and can keep up, but they can't. I've made sure of not letting down the guard with them and saying exactly what is on my mind, because they always deep down hold it against you and are offended. Also kind of feel bad for my one new coworker who just got so absolutely blackout drunk he fell back in his chair at a restaurant and onto some guy eating by himself, and then was just sleeping on the floor.

More thoughts to come,

-Boris
