Re: Bogota, Colombia Trip Report

where do u guys recommend living in Bogota? I'm toying w/the idea of moving out there. Last time I lived near Zona T and I was thinking of doing that again, if possible, but maybe there are better areas to live in?

I will definitely go sightseeing, of course. Plan to take a couple day trips as well; I spent the afternoon getting lost and found. (ok, and napping after that long bus ride).

Anything specific to recommend that I won't find in the lonely planet guide?

Probably won't make it to cartegena on this round; only have a week till I fly out. I was originally going to try and take a boat from cartegena (omw to Costa Rica), but I *really* need to be in CR the 15th and it seemed like I was maybe cutting it close, so I decided to fly.
I only spent few days in Bogota and barely had a chance to see everything I wanted; besides I usually don’t go with the specific plan but simply wake up as early as I can and walk the streets.
I just realized that I also played some poker tournament organized by guys from the hostel I stayed at.

Re: Bogota, Colombia Trip Report

Went to Rockefeller's again last night; really good actions on the cash games. Again I saw a grotesque dealer/player error involving two pair on board in a large pot. I had just just got there, it was the 2nd or 3rd hand dealt and JJ vs 67 on a AA55T got split at show down. Maybe I was hallucinating

Anyway, despite an outrageous rake 10% upto 10k pesos + 2k pesos jackpot drop; I have to give a lot of credit to the casino; super professional. I guess the hours have the place closing at 3am; but the floorman, a dealer and maybe a security guard kept dealing to us; we played 3 handed for at least an hour, ending after 5am.

Tipping seems to be much much different than what I am used to.. Tipping seems to only happen with large pots, and then not even regularly.

Like I said, the action was really good. I ran quite bad and was down about 550k pesos; I got some of it back before we went 4 handed; and was able to get the rest and then some (barely) when we were 3 and 4 handed. I don't think I've ever played short handed cash live before; it was a treat. Even though Dan made all the moniez raking 10k pesos per hand 3 handed >.<

They don't lower rake when it gets short handed?

My local casino is 10%/$6, but this gets cut in half for 6 handed or less... Yes, they consider 6 handed as "shorthanded".

No, they didn't stop taking a jackpot drop either. Most casinos I've played drop the rake at 5 or less. I would have complained if a) I had the command of spanish to make a convincing argument and b) they weren't keeping three people up at 5 am to let 3 of us play.

Re: Bogota, Colombia Trip Report

Eof, thanks for stopping by. It was nice to meet you.

That is our rake. Only way I can sort of rationalize it is it's actually low for much of South America, but yeah, it is high.

As far as reducing it when the game is shorthanded, we absolutely do. When we open a table, there is no rake until it's 4 handed. And if a table goes short 3 handed, we don't charge. 4 handed we may give a discount if asked, but that is table dependent.

That all goes out the window if it is "hora extendido," ie. after the casino has closed to the public. The employees remain only to operate the poker table, so at that point if people are playing, we are raking.

At any point the table does not want the Jackpot drop taken, we won't. Obviously none of the promotions would apply either. I certainly understand why one would not want the jackpot drop, but good luck convincing the table.

Want to thank you for the nice things you had to say as well. I try hard to offer a friendly atmosphere. I think we usually do besides the occasional shooting. Again, if any 2+2ers come to Bogota, please stop by. If you don't feel like playing, just have a couple drinks on the house.

Oh, and the shooting thing was an attempt at humor.

Re: hora extendido
Totally fair.

Re: high rake
Can't blame you! Really, 10% seems pretty standard where there isn't a lot of competition; ie outside of california/vegas.

It is a great vibe/place. I will be back at least once more. Cheers
