Best countries for live poker scene? Best countries for live poker scene?

Hey guys, I'm considering leaving the U.S. for the second time to play online as well as live. My first experience out of the country was down to Costa Rica and all I played was online. I lived in Palmares (which is about 45 minutes northwest of San Jose) up in the mountains. It was a great experience and I was moderately successful online but I wasn't able to play much live b/c of the 45-60 minute bus ride into the city to the casino. Took a job back here in the states and left CR about a year and a half ago.

Well I have since left that job and have saved up some money and I'm considering another move out of country again for another adventure as well as to take some shots on the bigger sites.

I would like to also have access to some casino's as well so I can mix up the live and online grind. I feel that I can hedge my roll through live 1/2 and 2/5 cash games while I take shots at some bigger prizes with mtt's on stars, tilt, 888, etc.

Any of you know what countries/cities have a good live poker scene (plenty of action, plenty of fish, etc.)? I'd like to stay around $4-500 / month if possible on my bills but I guess it depends on the location.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

There is no good live action outside of the usa, mainly because of the high rake. In europe, if one wants some high limit action, like plo 1k and up, one has some options. U need to see the live rake tables in cheaper countries, the size of the city, if tourists allowed without a member or references, visas and many more things. Ur best spot is vegas.

To seriously answer the question.

The best places are in the US, and some good ones in Canada too.

From my research and experience the rake everywhere else is too high.

You might want to check out this thread :

From firsthand experience, I would suggest Phnom Penh for 1-2-4 and 5-10 PLO or perhaps Cebu or Sihanoukville for lower, 1-2 action.

yep. Highstakes is good in other countries, but low/medium stakes is not.

I want to move to other places than North America to play live poker and travel soon. It is hard for me to conceive what that ''rake everywhere else is too high'' really means in practice. What is ''too high'' for you and how should I expect that to have an impact on my hourly rate in general? In North America, let's say someone makes a 30$ hourly rate playing 2-5 with a 10% - 10$ max (true rake in Montreal). Let's say that same player now goes to play 2-5 in Manila (let's assume that the level of players are about the same that in North America) where the rake is around 10% -16$ max. Sorry but it is hard for me to imagine that the hourly rate of that player made in America would drop down considerably because of that 6$ difference in the max rake...

Czech Republic is decent for live poker (Prague and Kings Casino in Rozvadov)

Also Bulgaria during the summer at Golden Sands and Sunny Beach but out of season not so good I think.

So if that player even wins only an average of 2 max raked pots per hour, their winrate will drop from $30/hr to $18/hr.

If the player is averaging 3 pots per hour, the winrate will drop all the way to $12/hr.

I would call that "considerable"
