if you need physical locations to do your banking, there aren't any. there are some Schwab investment locations where you can make a deposit, but it's not really like a bank in that fashion.

other than that, it's pretty great.

The Schwab website is saying a 25k minimum deposit to open an account? Am I reading this correct?

i opened my account with about $3k.

40s: i told you what I thought the problem with Schwab might be. everything you've listed, i've stated has been my experience. I'm not a CSR and can't tell you what official Schwab policy is. their CSR's don't suck. call them and ask if you aren't sure.

Yes.

Also, I was sad to learn the Schwab credit card isn't available to new applicants anymore (go figure). A damned shame.

Sorry to revive this but its the best place for it.....

So i went into Charles Schwab London yesterday and for the international community (I am from UK), the account which gives you free ATM withdrawals you need $10k USD and they told me that there will likely be blocked access to the countries I want to visit.

I am going to stay in thailand for a few months (maybe a year). I was wondering what the best option for me would be, and if anyone could help me decide which bank I should go for.

Thanks

I just opened the two accounts. It would not allow me to list Thailand as my mailing address. Anybody figure out how to do this? I'd like to have my Debit card sent directly here.

does anyone have any recommendations for international credit cards for a us citizen aside from the schwab credit card?

AMEX Blue/Travel. Amex isn't as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard but any old Visa credit card in addition to an Amex Blue will get you by anywhere.

Capital one has 0% foreign transaction fees. Amex is 2.5-3% iirc

The Schwab account is the NUTS. I opened mine in the USA and used it abroad already. Thanks Schwab! Fight and/or kill for this account poker players/travelers...

before i came here i opened a schwab account for debit, and got a capital one credit card. extensive research showed me those were the best foreign cards, and I have had no reason to believe they were bad choices.

I've been pimpin' the schwab account to everyone I know, because it really is the best checking account/debit card out there. i don't use credit cards much, but c1 has been fine.

Bank of America, for example, was terrible. Nowadays my banking relationship with BoA coud be characterized by me wondering how I can best screw them over by using their great ATM network and branch services while paying $0 in fees, keeping as little money in their accounts as possible, and never using any products they actually make any money off of.

**** you BoA.
how weird is it that I feel the same way? I had to pay an ABSURD amount in fees from BOA using my cards left and right for three months in thailand (over $2,000 in FEEES)
Etrade .. the fees are $0-$1

Not the best deal, but US Bank treated me fairly well in fees (although there was a PITA run around when I first started using my card overseas). Very minor. ATM fees were typical for any local bank here ($1-1.50), and they applied maybe a .5% foreign transaction fee on top of it.

Cliffs: get a Halifax clarity card for all card transactions which is 0% load etc (1% on ATM withdrawls too). If you want to do large amounts of money (for poker or w/e) then get a citibank foreign currency account and use Oanda to change money then use debit card as normal.

for credit cards, i use a Capital One card, when i did the research two years ago, it was the best available card for foreign travel.

one more note on the schwab card, when talking to a CSR a few weeks ago, i explained that i was now living in thailand, and he made it clear to me that the card is intended for travellers and not people living overseas. i'm glad that he didn't do anything else. i told him that i was planning on staying here for another year. whatever the case, if applying for a schwab account, don't make it clear you're living overseas if that's what you're doing.

Rutang whats the deal with Schwab and non-US citizens? Can we open an account?

I went to their website and had a poke around but it seems they want a US social security number to open an account.

I have been told that it's an account limited to US citizens, but that's just hearsay. I don't actually know about it.
