This is a one great thread! fmorgan - thanks for spending the time to create this thread and share so much info with us!

I think this is a perfect place to grind and to enjoy life. I am looking to move to Balneario around September, maybe even earlier. PM me if you're interested in sharing an apartment.

How do you guys feel about the fact that you can only stay 6 months? 6 months is an extremely short period of time. By the time you're just settling down and getting acclimated to your new surrounding, it's time to go.

Well, you can always join us there Btw, your name sounds very familiar, I am sure I've played you before. Do you play on Stars?

Hmm... well, if your name is nothing like your 2+2 nick, then I was thinking of someone else. I play $2K-$10K cash NL now, but I saw a similar name back when I was playing mid-stakes I belive. I sent you PM.

There are/were two different midstakes regs on Stars with screennames of gmoney followed by 4-5 random numbers. (One was very good and one was very bad.)

It is a grey area about the legality of poker in Brazil. Poker is allowed in private clubs, where there can be no rake. This is legal. However, every single club charges a 5% uncapped rake, which would be illegal. But everyone plays, there is no problem with that
Hey phil, nice thread!
Just want to point out that the info about the legal situation is incorrect
Poker is not illegal in Brazil. Rake has nothing to do with it.
There isn't a single instance of the word "poker" in brazilian law.

However, there's a mention to gambling, and exploring gambling is illegal (i guess thats why you mentioned rake). This law is from the fifties, when Casinos were banned in brazil.

So, the whole thing comes down to whether poker is gambling or a skill game. We all know the answer, but most feds dont. However, there are tons of reports and studies made by brazilian reputable experts, from all kind of areas (even the federal police) "proving" or cofirming that poker is a skll game,And those have been used by most clubs and tournaments to allow the operation to run 100% legally.

This is the reason there's LAPT in brazil, sponsored by the government (yes, sports minister of sao paulo made the opening speech in the last edition) . BSOP, the local series, run every month and it's also huge. Both charge rake and are legal.

There's still soke pre-conception about the activity, though. Some uneducated or uninformed people might think you're a criminal outlaw, and playing poker for a living will at the same tme make you look like a gangster to some people, while lookng interesting and glamorous to others (just like in most countries)

There have been clubs raided in the past, by uninformed policemen, but they withdrew it as soon as they saw thebstudies and legal allowance. Also, there hasnt been one for some time now.

Regarding online Poker, there's nothing. Brazlian law is still outdated in regards to online stuff, so when legislation about it comes, regulation will come along (and it's not gonna happen soon)

Cliffs: Poker is not illegal in brazil but also not regulated. Gambling (sports beting, casino) is 100% illegal, but reputable studies have been able to legally separate poker from that kind of gambling.

holla_back: no you cant do that, can only stay 6 months , not sure if it was in one year or in one calendar year.
im heading to BC most likely around january 4th or 5th, would be interested in a pokerhouse, but i cant guarantee how long im staying. im either staying 90 days or leave after like 2 or 3 weeks.
im still trying to find out how the mountainbiking there is and if its worth to bring a bike (which is usually a pain in the ass when travelling). any idea how i could get in contact with someone whos living there and knows about mountainbiking?

and would be nutz if someone has a room for me, im a NL 6max grinder, played mostly mid-highstakes this year, but not very active pokerwise atm.

You can stay 90+90 days during a stretch of an year. If you go to Uruguay for a week after having spending 90+90 days in Brazil, you cant come back. You can only come back 365 after your stay of 90+90 days.

But you could become a student and stay under a student visa.

Sorry for taking so long to reply... Add me on skype: fmorgen - I should be there very often and answer other questions you might have
