I cant understand why anyone would want to travel to the other side of the world just to live like a bum. Sure you can get an apartment for 5K TBH per month but to be honest they are awful. I mean if you were back home and that was where you lived then you have kind of failed.

Im all for being careful with money etc but my view is that the whole point of being in Thailand is to live a higher standard of living than you could at home, living in a shoebox that may or may not have a kitchen is not for me.

every one has different requirements and needs. What you said could hold truth to backpackers, why travel half way around the world if your budget is only £10 a day and you stay in hostels? they will prob tell you that when they did that it was the best it me of there lives.

I wouldn't say you have "failed" if your living in a place like that at home. What is Failing anyway? for me failing is someone who dont enjoy life, or is at least is not content with it. The sq foot of there house or the amount of cash in the bank has nothing to do with failing or success.

I stayed at 5 star hotels paid £140 a room, with an extra £10 a day for wi-fi. Then I have stayed in £6 a night hostels (inc free wi-fi, breakfast). I felt a had a more real interaction and feel for the country in the hostel. I didn't feel like I was just a customer, but more of a 'part time friend' to the owners of the hostel. Some small hostels, the owners will even get drunk with you.

What im trying to say and what others have said many times, just do whatever works for you. There is no "right" way to live in Thailand, there is "only the way you your self want to live"

It is much easier to take home a 24 year old office girl in Bangkok than a 20 year old uni girl in CM.

I did the whole backpacking thing when I was younger.

The thing with backpacking is you dont spend long in one area, you travel from town to town. When you go to Bangkok for a month, you arent really backpacking.

The idea is to travel and experience places, on the cheap, not to stay in one place and live like a homeless person who has just found $100.

^ less miserable negative posts plz

hostel hopping from ratchada-> lumpini -> petchaburi -> on nut -> ekkamai -> thong lor -> asok -> nana -> silom -> siam -> inthamara -> ratchethewi -> sanam luang and going out in each area would be a lot of fun, you'd meet tons of people and it'd be a different environment in each

Any decent parents would just be proud their kids are happy and doing what they want to do.

Thats not true at all.

Parents should and will love their children unconditionally, that does not mean that they should or will suspend reality and lend their full support to a child who is obviously failing in life.

Not everyone is superficial I'm afraid, some people just don't think like that.

I dont even understand that.

What Im saying is that a person can be both failing at life and be happy.. I know people like this.

They are loved by their parents.

However the same parents simply could never be proud of their kids as they give them nothing to find pride in.

He's alive and happy and living his dream, that's pretty successful IMO. I went to graduate school in science, got all the best scholarships, could have got a number of very well paid secure jobs. Instead I got into poker so I can do what elbow is doing for the rest of my life. The thought of being stuck in the same old job and living in the same home, in the same town for life makes me ill.
You see I have the courage to go against the norm. When I finally accepted I was not going to get a science job it was because I admitted to myself I was miserable. Most of the day to day work in chemistry is tedious just like any job. So I asked myself, why do I truly want to do this? The true answer I realized at this point was 100% low self esteem and the intense desire to have approval and respect from others. Once I realized this I decided right then that I wasn't going to live another day of my life worried about what others thought about me.
I'm a strong believer that the time makes the man not the other way around. Meaning that if I don't continue in synthetic chemistry, others will fill my shoes. Cures for cancer will still be found. I'm not so arrogant to believe the world depended on little old me for that.
Why should I live in a cold grey country that has good weather only 2/12 months of the year when I know perfectly well that I get very depressed when deprived of sun for long periods of time? I live my life to be happy, that's all that matters. When you're dead you can't take a penny of it with you. When you're old all you have is your memories and your character and your relationships and your joy. If there is some kind of after life it is this enhancement to your spirit that you can take with you.
