I'll be heading to Thailand for a while in mid to late March. Would anyone be interested in getting a place together?

Just arrived in bangkok, here are my observaions.

Don't drop cigrette butts on the floor near policemen. Instant 2K baht fine.

Dont be taken in by english speaking thais showing you round the sights and then offering you food at a restaurant. Trust me, the bill will be extortionate. Refuse to pay and you will enjoy the company of well built doormen.

Taxis on the meter are cheaper than Tuk Tuks.

Don't bring a full bag. Everything is soooooooooo cheap, you could arrive without a bag and still be just fine.

If you plan to take a night train north to chiang mai, book well in advance as they fill up pretty quickly.
Holy [censored]. I hope this is laden with sarcasm.

I didn't know diarrhea was such a problem. I never got anything close it while there for 3 months.

on this note, did anyone ever go to the big gold buddah or whatever every tuk tuk driver around khao san tries to drag you too. I was sure it was some type of scam so I never did but I'm curious what it was.

I have not dropped a single butt or match on the ground since I arrived in Thailand including the 4 months I have been in America since returning. I never got caught either, just heard about it.

Anyways, I might be going to work in the middle east and if so I'm going to try to catch a full moon party sometime if it falls on my vacation time. I'll be sure to hit you guys up if I get lucky enough to get a 10 day vacation in Thailand. God I miss it

Do Thai people realize that we don't have this kind of buying power in our home countries? Or do they just think we're rich people who happen to be vacationing it Thailand?

Theoretically, if I wanted to bang 24 hookers in 24 hours for my 24th birthday, how much would it set me back? Assume slightly above average doable hookers, nothing premium.

That's a funny thing to try on your 24th. i'd budget at least 50,000 baht but i like to splurge a little and i'm picky about whores.

Yes, I have been there a couple of times. It's the coolest gold buddha in BKK in my opinion because it is SOLID GOLD. That's Right. Not gold leafed like all the others. It's about 3 meters tall. Sick.

Hah.. yea the cops near MBK tried to get us on that one time. They just hang out waiting to bust people. My friend had some connections with higher ups in the Police Dept. We just showed them the business card and they let us go all laughs and smiles... good ol thailand.

How reliable is internet access in Phuket? What would be the best way for two farang to get a house/apartment without getting ripped off?

I think you mentioned that you can't get adderall at the pharmacies. Can you get any kind of stimulants? How about modafinil? Not that I would do this, but could you just walk in and buy something really hard-core like liquid morphine?

I spent a month in two condos with very reliable high speed DSL access. One even with wireless so I could use my laptop on the patio overlooking the fishing boats coming in during sunset at Kamala Beach. Power outages were more common than the net being down.

My family rented through ads in the Phuket Gazette, from other foreigners. Prices ranged, but there are deals to be had. The chances of getting ripped off are pretty slim as there is a pretty big rental market there and word gets round fast, I imagine. We honestly had more issues with the owners of a place we rented in Hawaii a month later.

The internet was set up by the condo complex itself at one place, and by the owners of the other condo we were at. Unlimited at both. We even met a 30-something guy who was doing 'day trading' (code for poker?) in the evenings after spear fishing, sailing and snorkelling all day...so the connection had to have been pretty solid.

oct, haven't you been here?

that post is 100% on point. i recently sent just about the exact same thing to dino in an email

I thought about this after and I think I used the wrong word. I just think it's funny that someone actually fell for all of the most classic scams in the book (except the cig butt thing, is that new?) and obviously didn't receive or listen to the most basic advice there is when you go to Thailand. Seemed odd to me.

A couple more random questions:
Will I be able to get quality imported beer and good bourbon anywhere? Does Bangkok have any upmarket liquor stores? I'd be willing to pay a premium.

According to wikitravel, "police occasionally raid bars, subjecting all customers to drug tests." Wtf, does this actually happen? Nothing kills my buzz like like men with guns demanding I piss into a cup while they watch. What happens if you test positive but don't have anything on you?

I started learning Thai and have a question for those who speak some. Do you use the politeness word (sounds like "krahp" for male speakers) when starting conversations with everyone? What about little kids or people my own age I meet at a bar? At what point in the conversation do you stop using it?

Booze, you can get it all there I'm sure. Go to the upscale markets and spend all you want. They have imports from all over.

Cop raids. They do this sometimes. They will roll up to a club and slap a big lock on the door and test everyone inside. The moral of this story is don't be stupid and do drugs in Bangkok. There is plenty of fun to be had getting drunk with girls. You don't want to have your e buzz blown by going to some detention center and wondering how long you are going to be in jail in thailand. -EV

Krhap or khap (sounds like kap usually) is used all the time. it's like a period at the end of a sentance if you are a guy. If you are a girl or katoey, say kha instead. You pretty much never stop using it. I have heard thais talking to each other and instead of 'uh huh' or yea the listener is saying khap, khap... khap.. i think i even heard one guy say khappity khap khap one time!

khrap kun khrap - thank you
sawadi khrap - hello
yindee khrap - nice to meet you
dao rai khrap - how much

You need to get a video to capture the feel of 100 motor scooters working their way through stopped traffic to get at the front of the line when the light turns green then all roaring off in and out of traffic.

I'm surprised by the number of high-end cars on that Bangkok street. I was under the impression the tarifs are sick.

There are some very high end wine shops and liquor stores in Phuket in particular. Can't remember exact brands etc, and you might pay a pretty penny, but might be able to find what you are looking for. Just remember the liquor buying hours.

I always use the polite term when speaking and don't really ever drop it mostly because I like to use it as an affirmative answer. Like when in a taxi and asked "Do you want off here?" "Ka, kup khun ka" sort of deal. This may have to do with my Canadian passport, though. Not completely sure what you mean when 'starting conversation' though. Do you just mean when you first meet someone, or as a way to open a conversation?
