Re: Ask us about Thailand!

If anyone is looking for a bit of peace and quiet for a month (may be the wrong place to ask, I know) I'm probably going to rent a big stunning 3br house with a private swimming pool in Cha-Am for 40k. I'll be concentrating on teh poker studies, so sharing with a 2+2er would be helpful. PM if interested.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

after talking to the embassy seams like i only have access to a 60 day tourist visa no extention; so should i go with that or do something like this http://www.languageexpress.co.th

well, actually i just wanted to know ur opinion on this type of school since i would like to pay for pvt tutoring anyway; i would rather just fly somewhere every 2months if considering only the visa issues and cost.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

I played SNGS in Samui and didn't have any problems. The major problem with internet is people using crappy wi-fi reception. If you have an ethernet cable plugged into a router, most ADSL connections in Thailand are fine, even for sitngos.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Hey guys,

I'll be in bangkok next week and after having ****ty internet for a few weeks now I'd like to find a place in Bangkok I could use to download some new tv series episodes (family guy etc.) I don't want to stay in a fancy hotel though. I have a laptop obviously so wireless is the way to go (no ethernet connection). Does anybody have any ideas on a good place for this?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

hi guys,

i'm currently in thailand right now and don't feel like looking through 8k posts. i apologize in advance if this has been asked.

if i go to a thai massage place that charges 300 baht, is tipping 40 okay? when i went down to order food at my hotel, they offered delivery when the food is ready. i looked at the receipt and it already charged me 20 bahts for delivery service, should i tip the guy bring me food again?

basically, i want to know what are expected tipping situations and which are not.

thanks!

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Generally your not expected to tip.

I've never been in a situation where I have not tipped and had a bad reaction.

Only time I tip is in restaurants, although I do often just let them keep the change.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

100 baht is half a day's wages for the average Thai person.

There are no expected tipping situations in Thailand. In fact there is exactly one country in the world where tipping is expected - the USA. The rest of the world just works it into the price of the service.

They will of course accept tips though. Just remember that you are probably already being charged 2-5 times the going rate before you think about tipping.

For example, in the taxi example above, if you had 100 baht change that means your ride cost 400 baht? That's double what it should cost. So in effect you tipped him 400 baht on a 100 baht ride.

i actually read an article yesterday that Egypt is in fact worse than USA in tipping

i am just hoping he was talking bangkok meter taxis. them i actually tip sometimes. if i had to use random tuktuk/taxi in phuket again i would never ever tip them after those retarded fares

This is pretty retarded. When is this ever the case? We have metered taxis, menus have prices, etc. Its not like when you are haggling for something at a market where the chances are higher of getting ripped off you go and tip your seller. In almost every situation where a tip is involved there are fixed prices or a generally free service (i.e. bellhop bringing bags to your hotel room).

My gf said that its common to tip not much more than 40 baht at a restaurant, no matter what the bill costs. 20-40 baht here or there won't really make any difference anyways, so I encourage tipping, especially because they really appreciate it. And this is coming from a busto poker player!
