There is a new 20 year option for a million baht and also more options enabling people to add family members at a discount.

Doesn't seem nearly a stable enough country to invest in a 20 year Visa. Hell 5 years is a somewhat risky investment, 20 is just asking for trouble.

Not to mention that someone is going to die soon and everyone hate his son

I would need at least $1M before id buy one. But if i did have that money i would snap buy the 20 yearer.

He's been 'on the verge of death,' for most of a decade now so it's hard to say how soon it will actually be. Dude keeps on keeping on, you've got to give him that.

But yes, that's the most obvious, soon to be event, that will shake things up for sure. But, for example, look at the Philippines right now. Out of the blue new President get's elected and starts killing mother fu ckers in the streets, execution style, left and right. Hell he grants private citizens the legal right to take that power into their own hands and be vigilantes. 300-400 people have been killed in this first month alone.

I wouldn't want to go to Manila right now, just a few months ago I'd have had no qualms whatsoever about going there.

What if that happens in Thailand anytime in the next 20 years? Manila could be a death squad, war zone for the next half a decade potentially. You want to shell out a million baht for a 20 year visa and then have a quarter of those years wasted because the country is being ravaged by violence?

Nah, you guys are too confident that Thailand is going to continue to be a farang paradise for ever. Not clear at all that's the case. 20 year visas are what you so in a stable country.

But recent global trends make it look as if there are no stable countries left anymore, whole worlds going crazy...maybe good old Canada is still safe and stable.

If it only lasts year meh who gives a ****. I'd look at it like a coin flip, longer it lasts the better but if i had a mil bucks right now i wouldn't care about losing the money for the card at some possible future point within the 20 years.

I know we have a 10 years VISA deal with China, not sure about other countries since it doesn't really concern me.

Get a student VISA and learn the god damn language if you are willing to live there that long...

Consequently, if i did have a mil right now and once i bought the card, i'd prolly spend less time in Thailand over the next few years anyway.

I'll admit I didn't do the math on how many years you actually need to get out of it for it to be a better deal than alternative options. I do realize it's not the full 20.

So maybe it's an ok deal.

My point about making a 20 year commitment in an unstable 3rd world country still stands though.

Should be clear doing so is a gamble, not a stable and sure thing.

Ok i took the easy way out instead if explaining why i wouldn't get a student visa.

Here goes;

I am not an poker playing grinder, or mturk slave... I have lived and work legally in Thailand on Business visa's and work permits for the best part of the last 17 years.

So i will only live in Thailand 'full time' if i am earning/working.

If* I had a massive cash injection like a $mil i would not need to work at all, and would base myself out of Thailand and from there would travel to other countries much more. With a student visa that's a hassle due to classes and the visa stamps you get etc..

I am probably going to go for the new 20 year option. I have been here for 12 years, don't want to get married and don't plan on moving anywhere for the forseeable future. Despite the fact Thailand is not as good as it once was I have investigated other places but am always happy to come back here at the end of my trip. 50k a year seems very reasonable to me for zero visa hassles at all. I agree there is a risk as you never know what will happen here but the chance of the visa being withdrawn and money lost from a government backed program is very small in my opinion. Such a decision would have a huge impact on attracting future investment. Of course there is the possibility the political situation turns violent etc but for me the pros of this new option outweigh the cons.

I would agree, paying alot for a 20 year visa in a country with constantly changing governments is definitely a risky investment.

Did you notice the trend how in the last year every single question is how to get something the cheapest, poker players are busto, no one degens anymore.
