I thought "visa run" indicated you were making the run to get the new visa, not making your second entry. Oh well.

I think he just forgot to put the border run part in there. And it should be called that since you effectively just step into another country for like 10 minutes while they do the paperwork and then come back to Thailand. An annoyance for sure, I had to spend 8 hours on a bus to Burma just to step over the border but not nearly the ordeal of having to go to KL, PP, VT etc and spend a few days there while they process your new visa.

A outbound/return ticket?

Or buying both legs at seperate times ie dparture and then booking the return a week or so before u leave via say air asia
It depends on the airline.

Most full service carriers charge basically the same amount for a one way trip as they do for a 3 month return, so if you are flying with them then it's cheaper to get a return ticket.

E.G. if you booked with someone like KLM it might be 600 quid for a return trip or 550 for one way. In that case you might as well book the return.

With low-cost carriers like Air Asia, all their flights are basically priced as one way flight. E.G. Perth-KL 1 way is $250. Return is $500.

The benefit of booking a 1-way is that your flight out doesn't have to be to your point of origin. E.G. if you flew 1-way from London-BKK, you don't have to have a ticket back to London. Anywhere out of Thailand is fine, so your outbound ticket could be a 20 quid Air Asia BKK-Kuala Lumpur flight and you'd still satisfy the requirement. This allows you to be more flexible with your return trip, if you aren't sure how long you'd like stay/where else to visit etc.

There are plenty of visa run operators that can process visas same day now, so effectively there's not much difference between a border run and a visa run.

E.G. There's a German guy running out of Samui now that leaves Samui at 6am and has you back by 8:30pm, including having a new business/non-o visa processed. The biggest hassle is the bus trip itself. Especially from Samui.

Of course to make this possible involves driving on Thai roads at 150km/h in a 14-seat van full of hungover Germans with diarrhea. On Average they have a serious accident where someone dies every 1-2 years. Education visa is the way to go for anyone planning on staying 6 months or longer, especially in Samui where there are few other good options.

except the cost of the new visa, though. In the border run, you don't have to pay for that.

The guy was telling lies and was caught out.

He didn't have to make stuff up did he?

Still at least if he ever appears on the easiest TV quiz show in the world ever and they ask the question, what is the name of the UK tax, which isn't income tax and isn't VAT that EVERYONE pays.. he'll now know the answer and make millions!

while you are far more likely to not be allowed to board your one way flight b/c you don't have an outbound ticket, i've heard recently of thai immigration harassing someone into buying a ticket before entry. i think they were specifically giving him **** for some reason, though. shouldn't be an issue at all.

airlines do it because if thai immigration didn't give you a exemption b/c you dont have the outbound flight, they are responsible for getting you back to your port of departure.

Yeah, just book it for 90 days after you arrive. BKK-KL is fine and probably the cheapest, but if you are planning on staying in somewhere other than Bangkok it would probably be better to book a flight out of a nearer airport, just in case you actually want to use that flight for your visa run. E.G. If you are planning on going to Phuket, book Phuket-KL instead. If you are going to Samui, book Surat Thani-KL.

You can look at the prices on Air Asia's website and book a ticket there. Most of their flights between Thailand and Malaysia are in the 1000-2000 baht range.

potslammer since u keep saying u r gonna check out PI use your "throw away" ticket as a flight to clark airport in PI, its very cheap and something you might want to/should use

and then for your "throw away" ticket for PI use the same flight back, ie clark to bangkok

There are ways around having to get an onward ticket, I did manage to get from the US to Bangkok 2 weeks ago, on only a one way ticket. I wasn't supposed to actually, and the people at the airport at LAX did try and make me buy another ticket before they would give me my boarding pass, but in the end I was able to outwit them, and got through with only a one way ticket.

Hola!

I'm travelling to Chiang Mai in november. Are any 2+2ers living there? I'm traveling alone so I wouldn't mind having some company. I'm not sure how long I will stay there, but at least month or two.
