ITT666 wtf...?
why wouldn't anyone go to china? i think it is a very interesting country to visit and highly recommend it. you might not agree with everything they do or think its a bit intense or whatever but it is certainly not an unsafe place compared to any other country in asia. needs to be experienced. and if you don't like it? move on. 2 hour flight

Ohh ya, I can't wait to visit India. This is one of the top reasons we're moving out to BKK actually. We're going to spend years exploring all the surrounding countries. All these places that cost 2-3k+ just to fly to from Canada like Japan/Australia/China/India can do round trip for 500-800 from BKK.

Not to get into an argument here, but I'm willing to bet my time spent in China and over all experience with the country exceeds yours. Regardless of that, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Every time I have been to China (4 times in total,) I was there to live and work, not to visit/travel.

I agree with Donols that it is a very interesting country to visit, if you never have, and would also recommend visiting it if you never have. That being said, I wouldn't stay in the same area for long, not because of anything to do with safety, but only because the longer you stay, and the more you end up living there rather then just visiting/traveling the more you are likely to grow to really dislike it there, as I eventually did. Many others I have known there experienced the same transition in their feelings towards the country over time.

So yes, by all means, visit the country, just don't stay in any one area for too long, and definitely don't stay in the country as a whole for too long.

Also if you are expecting to be able to get none hooker girls to have sex with you after just meeting you once or twice, as you easily can in Thailand/Philippines then THINK AGAIN!! it's a long long shot at best, no matter how good looking you might believe you are, and no matter how smooth you might be, bedding a none hooker Chinese girl as a foreign guy is VERY VERY hard, and near impossible unless you plan to date her over a longer period of time.

2. From america flights dont cost anywhere between 2-3k+. Is your gf a hiso first class flyer?

3. Living hiso in THAI isnt cheap. To tell you the truth 30-40 baht meals suck!
Is your gf going to be able to live in a DUMPY 5000 baht apt. far away from the BTS or MRT?

4. What the hell is your gf going to be doing in THAI. It really doesnt have much to offer.

If your premise in moving to THAI is to save money i think you are on the wrong track. If its too have a good time ...............GREAT!

Maybe you can ditch the gf.....................hahahahaha!
Dumpty 5k baht apartment? The bare minimum I'm spending on rent is 15k and even that is just my plan for the first few months while we look around at other options.
Not silly to have 8 credit cards, I just do. I've accumulated them over the years, while I was in grad school. Now that I haven't had a real job in 4 years I wouldn't dare cancel any card or request a limit increase because I'll never get approved.
I took more cash that that with me when I spent a couple weeks in Cancun and it wasn't really any stress. We were back packing around too all over the Yucatan. It's just the opposite of paranoia, cc's are obviously a lot safer.

Thailand doesn't have much to offer? LOL. ok.

ROFL, you are either leveling or never been to China. Chinese girls are obviously the easiest girls in the world especially for Western guys. Just show up somewhere in the nightlife basically and you will find some Chinese girls up to whatever.

Ya random troll post I'm guessing. Obviously if your goal is to explore most of the countries surrounding Thailand it makes sense to move there for awhile. Who want's to take a long haul flight every month even if money were no object? But I'm certain I could spend years just in Thailand before I was bored (lol at "nothing to offer"). I want to live in Krabi, Phuket, BKK, and Chiang Mai for several months each. I'm a PADI certified advanced diver, going to doing lots of diving. Going to be renting boats and exploring around the small islands, some days just snorkeling and tanning on the beach, some days kayaking, some days jungle excursion, some days 5some with me, my gf and 3 of the hottest girls we can find, some days visiting the cultural centers, temples, museums, some days going to our language classes and learning a new language, some days exploring the various restaurants (Thai food actually one of my favorites), some days clubbing, some days ect ect ect.....wait Thailand has "nothing to offer?" FAAAAKK My gf gonna be pissed when I inform her of this breaking news!!!

But ya I'm cheap in a lot of areas, I hate wasting money if there is another way. Even extra vig on exchange tilts me. Spending $300+ extra on a flight that will still take up 20 hours of our life...tilt. But when it comes to accommodations/food/entertainment/good scotch/cigars/trips/whores/ect I don't believe in skimping.

Anyone know a place in BKK that repairs watches? Have a problem with clip on my watch and was wandering if anyone knew a (non-shady) place that could possibly fix it at a reasonable price.

That said I was also planning on taking more than a couple trips there once I'm settled in Thailand.
Like I said man, look for EVA Air, same price as China Eastern. Well worth it from all the bad things I have heard about the Chinese airlines.

Honestly, I think you are overthinking and overplanning way too much. I know because I did the exact same thing before I came here 4 months ago. It's not just 6k CAD unless you are rich and that kind of money doesn't mean anything to you. 6K goes a long way in this country and it's completely ridiculous to have that much money on you. Not to mention the potential safety concerns that Pokerspiv pointed out, although small chance.

I mean if you are truly saving a bunch through your forex guy ok. But I don't know how you get better rates than the banks here in Thailand. I am interested if you are somehow. My advice, don't worry about all this so much, forget about bringing baht, just bring CAD, 1k max, just use cards after that and have a great time.

bringing 6k in cash as a back up or emergency is fine. it's far from excessive. getting it all converted to baht before leaving for thailand is silly. will get a better rate changing it in bangkok.

if he's going to be living in thailand he only needs enough for the first day or two. change enough money for a day or two at the airport then go to one of the money changers like super rich and change the rest of the 6k.

I brought 1/4 of that amount and it took me several weeks to go through while partying my face off. If I have an emergency and need a big amount that is what my bank card is for. Also, I believe most banks will issue you a backup card, mine did at least. It isn't activated. In the event that you lose your main card or have your wallet stolen you simply call the number on the backup card and they will deactivate the stolen/lost one and activate the new one. To each their own I guess, but carrying around 6k in Thailand just seems like an unnecessary risk to me, even if that risk is low.

uhhh dont do this

keep your cash in USD as long as possible imo

you're not going to be carrying around 6k or baht equivalent you're going to leave it in a safe. so you went through 1.5k in several weeks of partying? that's very much on the low end of the spectrum. it's not realistic for most people coming to thailand to enjoy the night life.

you wont need baht until you touch down in bangkok, get it exchanged in the airport instead of getting raped by the currency exchange in Gatwick [like i did]

obviously, but the guy going to thailand was insisting that he change ALL his cash into thai baht before even getting on a plane. if he wants to change ALL his cash he'd be better off to wait until arriving in bangkok.
