K2D, I used to grind online poker about 9-10 hours a day (including breaks,) when I lived in Bangkok and was obv in my room that entire time.

I had no kitchen area whatsoever, and no fridge either. I had some nuts and such in my room, good solid protein sources and whatnot. Other then that I got everything daily on the streets near my apartment.

Bangkok is amazing when it comes to street food, and you can buy everything fresh on the street. Pretty much any kind of food you can think of you can buy for very reasonable prices either right on the street from cart vendors, or in open aired restos.

Just find an apartment that is surrounded by these types of places, and you'll be fine. It won't be too hard as most areas in Bangkok are filled with this.

Even for grinding online and spending so much of the day in your apartment, you really don't need a kitchen. The thing is, once you factor in the cost of the stuff you bought to cook, eating out won't be that much more expensive anyway, and we'll definitely be worth the time you save.

recently kicked out my thai gf and i'm prob never gonna use my kitchen anymore lol. i just go out, pick up stuff on street, or get stuff delivered

but it's pretty basic anyway, and i pay 18k/mo for 1 bedroom flat. finding a large kitchen in condo-type accommodation is pretty hard. there's a low demand for them i think

That looks fine.

Separate bedroom, small kitchen, washing machine etc...

I notice the price is back up to around the 20k mark, which is kind of what I found to be the baseline for "livable" places.

yeah well i lived in 5k - 6k studios for my first 2 years here and was still comfortable, just recently decided to upgrade. has pool/gym/sauna on roof that's basically empty other than me 24/7, so it's pretty nice

next year i think i'll go for a 15k place in thong lor

I go to bars, and I live in Samui. I've never paid more than 80b for a beer in Lamai.

I don't consider places that charge 6x cost for drinks just to differentiate themselves to be "decent". If you go to places like that, you will only ever meet tourists. Expats don't drink in them.

For everyone crapping on living the frugal life in Thailand, it seems to me like you might be missing one major point. A lot of guys who make a lot of money playing poker learned the game in college. Their expenses were $0, or at least very cheap. They probably were sharing a crappy dorm with no kitchen and might not have even had AC (I didn't freshman year).

But they used this time to grind and learn the game. As they learned the game, their bankroll grew. They moved up in stakes and made more money. By the time college was over, they had the option to live comfortably while applying their poker skills.

I view living the poor life in Thailand as a similar option. Live like a college student. Grind and learn poker. As your skills increase, your earnings increase. After a while, you can upgrade lifestyle. and I think we all had a good time partying in college, even though we were poor. Same can be true about Thailand.

Ps. I don't live there. Just my thoughts from lurking this thread and daydreaming about the good life of cheap living, online poker, and Thai bar girls.

I'm not sure what the obsession with kitchens is. If you want to cook, you can buy appliances whether your apartment has a kitchen or not. All you need is a sink really. FFS Thai people cook your food on a modified motorcycle sidecar.

I cooked on one of those electric woks for years I still prefer them to using pans on a cooker imo

All ya need is electric wok, microwave and a rice cooker, fridge and sink to rinse the dishes happy days.

But he is happy.
You can't really believe he's happy....I know a few serious alcoholics and it's a tragedy. But assessing their emotional health is like assessing the depth perception of a blind man. The fact that he requires a mind altering substance means his natural state is not a happy one by definition.

By the way for the record I'm on the same page with you here. I grind at home at least 6 hours a day also. I plan on spending at least 600usd/month on rent. I want good atmosphere and comfort. For me this is a personal investment as I'll be more successful in a more comfortable and spacious work environment. But if I just needed a crash pad I wouldn't consider living in some studio apt. with no kitchen a failure.

quick tr from a few nights back:

was chatting to a bargirl that i had also met a week previously, we're drinking, playing pool, connect 4, chatting, everythings good

suddenly **** kicks off and i end up sitting in the middle of 2 bargirls screaming at each other in thai outside of this bar, which is in the middle of a square where loads of bars were, people staring

bargirl #2 storms off, my one smashes a lightbulb with her bare hands, has already smashed her beer all over the place, blood all over her hands

she crys into my shoulder for the rest of the night, i take pity on her and bring her back to my place

in the morning she is trying to do all this cute **** like pinch my nose and hug me from behind etc

eventually she leaves at like 10

you guys weren't kidding about thai girls being bat**** insane

The frozen spaghetti are delicious. Especially if you cook yourself some fries and blend them in.

I didn't say anything about sexytime, she had been crying and confiding in me about her family and her problems and **** all night, I have morals

I only took her back to my place cause otherwise (from what I could understand) she would have to sleep in the same room as some other bar girls including the one she was fighting with
