I lived in Bangkok in 2009 for $300/month, and I maintained that budget for many months at that. I actually enjoyed my life over all even living on that tight a budget, and I did have my own room too, in a modern/new apartment building...wasn't living like a Thai out in the sticks or anything like that.

Granted that was 7 years ago, but that was Bangkok and I was living on half his proposed budget.

So $600/month in Chiang Mai now should definitely be doable, and if you do it right and have the right mind set there is no reason one can't be happy while doing it.

Did anyone apply for a visa in HK recently ?
I'll need to do it next week so if anyone knows what they ask it will help.

I'll probably print a fake plane ticket and booking in case they ask me anything.

If you have 600 $ /month you are very unlikely to turn your life in thailand without a huge discipline that you most likely don't have since you are at that low point and not have any half serious problem there since you will be in survival mode

+1 with ITT666

Just don't go to Chiang Mai because you are on a low budget and you think it's your best bet. You can do it in Chiang Mai but you can do it in bkk too. Bkk is better imo, you have access to a bigger girls pool and a lower young expats ratio that in CM especially if you are living in bkk outside downtown.

Imo the key to be living on a low budget like 600$ a month is how much you gonna spend on your rent + food. The lower the better of course. So for a 600$ a month budget (around 20k bath after withdrawal tax) let's say your rent is 5k for a nice condo (for this price you can have a modern small condo close to bts, the farthest you live from bts the cheapest obv) + 8k for food and water (for a healthy diet, can be less of course) + 1k for internet, so for this exemple 20k-5-8-1= 6k you have left 6k that you can spend on whatever you want. Just don't forget that you need to add the visa run cost every 3 month which is something like (by bus aka busto mode) 3k (bus from bkk + hotel + food) + lao visa cost (it depends of your nationality) + thai tourist visa 1k + immigration 30 days extension 2k

In my opinion it's not easy to live here on a 600$ budget but if you have the right mind set, you can do it man. gl

i think thai minimum wage is 300 baht per day and i'm sure many are still underpaid, yet they manage to survive.

Stupid post.
Thai don't need visa to stay in Thailand and don't need to fly back home when broke
They have family support in thailand
They don't need to get work permit
They have social health care...

It's certainly possible, but it's important to have savings in case unforeseen stuff happens like having to pay police bribes/karaoke bills/hospital bills/buffalo payments

The problem is that it's rare that going to thailand will help you getting out of a ****ty financial situation.
Unless you can teach English as Acer advice. Most people should work hard and save as much as possible for a year before attempting to move like that.

Low budget are doable but way harder to pull at start when it's your first trip

eddiemitchel, as I stated in my last post in 2009 I lived in BKK off a budget of just $300 a month, including visa cost fwiw. I don't think cost have more than doubled over the last 7 years, so since he has double my budget he should be able to at least live as I lived then, and probably a hair better.

Granted I was a 20/21 year old fit and healthy young man, so that's important of course. I wouldn't recommend anyone middle age or older trying to live there on that budget, that's for sure.

Do I want to go back to living that cheaply now? No, not really. But I did get by fine on that tight of a budget back then, and yes I still went out and had fun and yes I still got laid.

Over all I did enjoy my life when I was living off of that $300/month in BKK, so I think he can do it too.

It does depend on age though. I'd recommend being in your 20's if you're going to live off that tight of a budget, you can do it if you're 30+, but the older you are the more ridiculous you will look trying to live there for that cheap, also of course you have to worry more about the possibilities of health issues or injury as you get older too, so the older you are the less good of an idea it is not to have anything to cover the possibility of those happening to you.

So Chodey22 the younger you are the more ok of an idea living off that budget is, the older you are the less ok of an idea it is.

If you are young and without any obligations or attachments were you currently are, I don't think trying to make a go of it in Thailand off that budget is the worst idea.

Anyway whether or not it is a good idea or a bad idea I can tell you from personal experience that it is doable to live there on that budget and still enjoy your life.

Or maybe you ran pretty good and that's why you didn't fail. Or you are super disciplined and hard working.
Now I'm sure we can find thousands of exemples of people failing where you succeded. Your view is a bit result oriented and the consequences of failing are not the same for everyone.
Odds it doesn't end with him begging for money to have a plane ticket back home in his parents basement are not great. Depending on his real life situation it can be acceptable and a good experience or that could be super stupid.

Yeah fair, I think we are also answering two different questions here.

I'm answering the question of 'Is it possible to get by in Thailand on a budget of $600/month?'

I know the answer to that is yes, because I've done it.

You're addressing the question of 'is it a good idea to fly to Thailand and live off of just $600/month?'

Obviously that question does indeed depend on many things about the person in question, and you're probably right that many will find themselves no better off a year or two later and quite a few will probably be worse for wear.

I'll point out though, if Chodey22 is to succeed in poker long term 'disciplined and hard working,' is something he'll need to be.

pretty terrible example, he isn't gonna live like a Burmese construction worker lol

$600 = 20000 baht

4000= apartment with AC within walking distance of public transport
1300= visa/visa run costs(assuming he has a multi entry visa already)
4000= food/water
2000= transport: bus when you can, but sometimes will have to use taxi, bts
1000= internet
1000 = electric, water

leaves you with enough to go out to a club and share a bottle with friends once a week Just don't ever get sick, hurt, overstay a visa, etc. The danger isn't in living day to day on that amount, its what would happen if something bad happens.
