how long are you going out for?

I plan on living there for the next few years. I plan on moving around Septish so I'll have to come by in summer again to find and lock up a place.

Seoul is ridiculously sick as a city and easy to get around too once you figure out public transportation.

Teaching isn't really that bad out here and it's a good way to meet people and settle into your area. Also, you don't have to worry about housing if you're teaching because your school will provide an apt.

But with that said, if I were balling I def wouldn't be teaching.

I work in music and the industry there really intrigues me, enough so that I would put my job on hold to become fluent in the language. I just turned 24 and I'm thinking of going for 2-4 years.

The nightlife looks just as interesting-I have partied in some of the best clubs in Miami, Rome,Venice, Paris, Montreal and NYC. I want to see how Seoul stacks up.

Annoying kids does sorta bother me but I can't think of any other way to make money/learn the language. Maybe I need to step my poker game up. I have only really won a few home games and it was for chump change.

I live near Dongguk University (which is where my gf and friends are attending as international exchange students), and I play on their campus. Theres two outdoor courts, with a lot of students playing, and they're very friendly

I assume the other Universities are the same.

I've only been out here for a few weeks but what I like about the nightlife is the bars stay open all night and are a lot of fun. The Koreans I've met have been really friendly. The public transportation is really good and taxis are cheap (so you don't have to worry about spending a lot to get to different areas). From what I've read and seen so far Korea is also very safe. I've been walking around a lot at night here and have never felt unsafe at all.

I wouldn't really say the women are "wild." It's not like Thailand or anything but there are definitely some girls you will find that like foreigners. And some that don't. Just like anywhere different girls will be into different things.

The weather is comparable to the Mid West in the U.S.

The variety of nightlife options is the reason why Seoul is the nuts when it comes to partying. There are just so many things to do. Just in terms of drinking, you can go to all different types of bars (Izakaya, sit-down bars, euro-pubs, specialty bars (wine, makali, etc.), etc.), different types of clubs (techno - Heaven/Eden, Hiphop - NB, live band/techno - JJs, Nightclubs (Booking clubs) - where you sit at a table and u meet girls that waiters bring to you), salons - where u basically sit with a hot girl (sometimes a hooker) and she pours ur drink/acts like ur girl for the night, and restaurants open at all hours of the night. There are just so many options that it is sometimes overwhelming.

the women aren't as a wild as thailand, but they are very pretty in general. no fat girls and the women take care of themselves (skirts/stockings in the winter). plus, they can be more endearing than western girls.

the weather is cold, but it's not any different from boston or nyc imo (except for less rain and snow).

+1 to what most ppl have said above. seoul can be a very comfortable place to live for foreigners with its abundance of western comforts, but, at the same time, provide a great east asian cultural experience.

an actual grind house would be tough to start in seoul. it's all apartments and getting a nice 2 to 3 bedroom apartment in a relatively nice area can be 6k to 10k. my aunt's place is a 3 bedroom place in ichon, which is ok but not gangnam would be 18k/month if she didn't buy it (i guess it's beccause it's top floor)

I'd be interested in something like this. I still need to get up to Walker Hill at some point to play live here.

There are the option to go to a "home" (sorry for my english) named Hasook-Jib , its a residence with individual rooms, shared bathroom and kitchen, the price is around 500,000.00 Korean Won/month.

how is roccoco club? i kind of wanted to go there since it was right next to the IP Boutique hotel which i was staying at one time i was there, but i dont like going out in itaewon. Prefer gangnam and hongdae

lots of girls speak english though, its not that difficult to tell who they are by looking at them.

edit back above poster ^^^ that pillow bar?? is it Oi? in hongdae?

Itaewon is generally the place for foreigners to meet Korean girls, but I can't really say that much about it.

I actually frequented a place called JJ Mahoney's in the Hyatt hotel near Itaewon. It's a really classy place with live band and techno DJ. Somewhat of an older crowd - 24+, but a lot of the girls speak english and there are a fair amount of foreigners. Plus, if your young and decent looking, you got an edge when it comes to hitting on these girls since some of the male clientele are kinda old.

Downside is that drinks are 15000won+, but no cover. My friends and I usually pound a Soju and a Cass before heading in.

TBH - I would generally stick with Gangnam and Hongdae. I have a white friend who speaks almost no korean and he has moderate success at some of the more trendy clubs like Heaven, Eden, or NB.

hahaahaha

fellow korean here. well ne can also mean like "what? or excuse me" depending on your voice tonality. I read "jook uh leh" and was thinking like, "What does that mean?" until I actually started saying it in my head over and over again and then AHH I see.

yeah in Korea, under no circumstance can you really ever fight back with someone who's significantly older than you. just gotta bow your head, say sorry and walk away.
