Why is it that Korean food outside of Korea is just not even close to standard. It's made by Koreans. The ingredients aren't anything difficult. Had some jjigae in Edinburgh today that was 14 pounds that I wouldn't pay 5000won for in Seoul. This **** is desperate.

Ummm, not sure this is true! Alot of food I've had in LA was better than anything I've had in Korea.

Toronto is generally **** for Korean food but there's a gamjatang place here that is better than anything I've had in Korea.

Edinburgh? I mean I could have guessed it would be terrible there lol.

Hard access to MSGs outside of Korea = more expensive.

I mean, they're all owned/operated by Koreans. I'm like 0/20 in ten different cities finding good Korean food. Have not been to LA though in over a decade.

I wonder the same thing, like why the **** does nyc not have good korean food? I think there are some ingredients that are harder to get...I was told Gochugaru varies in quality and even in Korea it can be pretty expensive to buy the good stuff...but then again it's a powder and you would think that would be something that is easily packaged and sold around the world. Koreans touring abroad love to eat korean food lol, why it's so hard to find good korean food internationally is a sad mystery

LA has some phenomenal korean food. Next time you go, post in thread and I'll find some places for you

There's this one soon duboo placed called Beverly Soon Tofu...it's so good that you regularly see white americans eating there. I've yet to get any of my friends to eat tofu D:

My mother in law already sent us like 5 pounds of gochugaru. My wife mixes it with the stuff we get in Germany to make it last longer. Normally I'd be against that but it seems fine to do. Got so lucky marrying a woman who can cook.

gochugaru is serious stuff lol

my mom actually has a kimchi refrigerator, whenever she buys stuff from the market, she'll tweak it and then rest it to make the kimchi I love

My korean's really bad so I can't remember it right now, but there's another sauce that they use, typically for hwae dup bap, and even in Korea they mix in Sprite soda to make the sauce what it is

out of curiosity, where in Germany?

Yeah def gochujang. I'm an addict for that stuff. I've started substituting it for tomato paste in recipes.

I'm in Kaiserslautern. Like an hour southwest of Frankfurt.

Just want to tell you guys to check out the Bubble Rush Trnys.

There have been some big overlays in them. A $22 10K GTD only had 750 players. ($2500 overlay). In two micros today. $4.40 $3K GTD only had 543 players ($828 overlay), $5.50 $3K GTD only had 509 players ($455 overlay). I'm not sure why, maybe they just haven't caught on yet. Also, just as important is the challenges, if you cash in a Bubble rush Trny, you get a ticket to a $7500 freeroll which is great value $7.50- $10, and lots of players just "sit out".

They are 3 minute hypers til the bubble, then its 11 minute blinds. I like them, so far I'm 2 out of 3 in min cashing, earming 2 freeroll tickets. The one I lost I went for the win stupidly, when I could of just folded my way to at least a min cash for the freeroll ticket.

Does Walker Hill Casino host regular poker tournaments?

I went to WH for a short 1/2 game which seems to be flooded with Japanese last week. Had a good game but too short because wife making noise. Do you guys play among yourselves here?

Anyway I will be going to Seoul again next month, thinking of going to WH together with anyone who play regularly there.

Cheers!

Heading to Seoul for just under two weeks starting on Tuesday. The plan is to eat infinite Korean food, and... well, that's the plan so far.

Worth heading to Busan for a side trip? Need to fly out of Seoul on the 12th, so I have basically 11 days to spend. Never been to ROK before. Interests include food, food, weird local cultural experiences, nature. No interest in nightlife, partying, etc. Been browsing this website of some dude's top 50 ROK experiences for ideas. He says watching a live Starcraft tournament is a quintessential Korean experience, that sounds like exactly the kind of weird cool cultural thing I would enjoy. Jimjilbang as well. I know about the DMZ tours, etc.

11 days is a looooooooong time to spend in Seoul. I would say definitely go to Busan but I may be biased.

you were the sailor right? If so, Busan especially holds interest to you, it being a port city and all. Also, it's easy to get there and easy to get back. Just KTX it. Culturally I would recommend walking through the markets in Seoul, namdaemun, dongdaemun... nagwon if you like fish. Hit up the folk museum (it's free) if you have some free time in a day. Maybe a monk temple visit since you have so much time? As far as food make sure you try samgyupsal (korean pork belly) sannakji (live octopus) and chimeak (chicken and beer) You really can't go wrong with Korean food. Just don't eat the same thing every day. I personally think the DMZ is a must but others may disagree.

Wow, the KTX is sweet. Thanks for pointing that out. And the KTX goes to/from the Seoul airport as well, stupendous!

I will 100% eat everything you listed.

What I'm looking for (besides eating as much different Korean food as possible) is contemporary Korean cultural experiences, hence stuff like watching a Starcraft tournament, visiting a jimjilbang, etc.

Here are my notes for potentials (only researched Seoul so far):

starcraft tournament
jimjilbang
bbq raw meats
silent disco
drink Makgeolli (alcoholic rice drink?)
street food (Namdaemun market, Gwangjang Market)
Noraebang (karaoke)
food walking tours
supermarkets (yeah, just ordinary supermarkets)
Cheonggyecheon Stream walk
Naksan park / seoul forest
Grilled Fish Street in Dongdaemun Market
Poopoo Land (in Insadong)
Alive Museum / Dynamic Maze (Insadong)
Noryangjin fish market
Kimchi Field Museum
Seoul Museum of Chicken Art
Seoul Trick Eye Museum

More standardish stuff:
Gyeongbokgung Royal Palace
DMZ
war memorial

Other:
hanok stay (traditional korean stay)

no:
temples
huge malls
nightlife

Guess I'll be researching Busan tonight, now that I know it's just 2.5hrs by speed train.

In Kuala Lumpur right now, flight to Seoul leaves in about 10 hours.
