I'm German/American and will spend time in Rio for the next 7 months (starting mid november).
I have booked flights to Brazil (Rio), but will face problems with visum. Wanna stay 7 month, but of course 180 days in a one year period is the max allowance.
Do you know how it works with fines? I have read its something like 10-15 Reais per day and 800 max, so that is not going to be the issue. My plan is:
1) Come in November and get the normal 90 days visum. 2) After one week, i will visit a local office and ask to prolong the visum for another 90 days = 180 days.
I am told this is normal and easy.
3) Then i would stay ~ 30 days longer than the 180 days. Will go to the airport 3-4 hours earlier, play stupid tourist/gringo, pay the fine and leave.
Do you think there will be any problems?
Anybody tried this on purpose or accident?
Are there alternatives like sending the officer a Caipi ?
Fwiw, i've done this numerous times in other countries like Argentina,Peru or Thailand. They are very rational about it and only want your money and will never give you any further trouble.
(Compare that to Europe or USA where they put it more in the crimimanl category)
Just checking if Brazil is different, since their system seems a bit more sophisticated and complicated.
