Plan: Go somewhere in SE Asia (Thailand, Philippines) to grind for couple of months.

Problem: To do that I need my desktop PC + my 2 screens with me.

Solution:

a) Take parts of the hardware (no tower) + 1 screen with lugagge and buy tower + 1 screen at destinition to put it back together.

b) get it shipped (prolly 100-150EUR and long time).

c1) Buy everything new/ second hand - sell aftwerwards. (is there a market)
c2) Buy expensive laptop in EU + 1 screen overseas - sell aftwerwards.

How did you do it?

travelling that distance with 2 monitors and a desktop is not really feasible

Shipping would cost alot more than 100-150 EUR

Good laptop + 27/30 is the way forward

I'd wager that if you can afford to travel to SE Asia, it's not going to bankrupt you to just buy a new setup there.

you can take the two screens in your luggage, face to face bubble wrapped. ideally they have a low profile stand. roll up t shirts and stuff them all around the edges. get a laptop-napsack carry-on and stuff it full of clothes - I took 5 kilos of clothes in my napsack to stay under 20kilo for main luggage. buy a laptop b4 you go.

not going to be worth taking a desktop I dont think. if you dont want to buy a laptop, mebbe scavenge parts from your home pc and have one built here. te box is the problem but a box is cheap. could prob take everything but the disk drive and box - both cheap

TY for answers so far.

Conclusion so far:
Buy a good laptop (min 8GB RAM for HEM2, maybe 17") at home and take one 24" screen with me. Maybe sell both overseas. Prolly have to declare and pay $$$.

VAT is 12% for importing Laptops & notebooks:

@fancy: ofc not going bankrupt, BUT i already have 1 desktop w/ 2 screens, 2 laptops (old and v old) and a smartphone - no need to overload. Just looking for the most efficient way to do it.

Pay the cost of extra luggage. Pack your components in suitcases first. My desktop is pretty wide, it still fits into my largest suitcase. Stop by some goodwills or salvation armys and check for used luggage, older is usually bigger too. Bubble wrap the led monitors. They might go in a wardrobe type of luggage with handles.

Did you call the airlines and ask about it?

You can buy clothes cheap there. Pack your gear first.

wont have to pay anything, me and my friends alway travel with screens and nobody had problems so far, just wrap with bubble and some shirts and will be ok.

you can bring monitors but a desktop is way too large...I packed my monitor in a suitcase with my clothes without any problems...i bought a new desktop once I got here (Thailand) ...I am here long term so I didn't mind buying new since it's easier to use a high res monitor with a desktop than laptop...shipping is not a good option as the cost is way too high so you might as well just buy new here + you might get raped by Customs for import fee...happened to me when I bought a good computer chair from US

How long you gonna be there?

If your airline doesnt charge much extra for extra luggage bring what you have from home.
But it's usually pretty expensive with overweight.

Can get decent monitors in Phil for about 70-150usd, I dont know much about buying computers in Phil but Hong Kong is 2 hours away, you can build a sick rig from Golden Computer arcade for almost no money at all, flight to HK from AC is about 60 usd.

http://www.cdrking.com/ is a good store that has stores all over PI, If you want to buy some spare computer parts.

Samsonite makes a large suitcase that is EASILY large enough to hold even the largest desktop.

Forget taking clothes. It isnt even worth the hassle of taking and bringing back dirty. Clothes so cheap in asia. Geez they have all our old looms that make the best jeans anyway.

To bring a desktop, just disassemble it, pack the parts well and buy a new case when you arrive. Absolutely do not buy a laptop of any kind or high end monitor here in Thailand/Phils unless you have money to burn.

i was thinking along the same lines to disassemble the parts but if you have a proprietary system like a Dell or HP that might not work..

Where are you travelling from? I can get you very cheap flights in business and first class using points (About $2k - $3.5k return range depending where from and if u want business or first). You get 50kg of luggage allowance doing this. I've done this 50+ times for 2+2ers, have tons of references from people in the BKK community, send me a PM if you're interested.

Also, I had no troubles taking a dell 30" in a large samsonite case padded with clothes. Taking the PC internals is a great idea, as you only need the components, the desktop and PSU is where all the weight is and they're cheap to buy in phillipines or thailand. Monitors are cheap everywhere but yeah also easy to take in ur luggage if you have the luggage allowance.

If you buy a laptop be sure it can power a 30", a macbook pro is your safest bet.

Big 27" 2560x1440 (same ultra high quality IPS panels as in apple monitors) can be gotten from Korea very cheaply, delivered:

Thanks for the offer, but I am not rolled for BC/FC yet.

Prolly just getting a 17" Laptop, put my SSD in and take a 24" with me. That should do it.

Thanks all!

i'm having the same problem, have desktop + 2 27" screens to take with me.

think i'll try to put the two screens with bubble wrapping and clothes i cant buy there in a big suitcase, dissemble desktop, parts and netbook in the largest allowed cabin bag and go with that.

not sure if it fits the weight requirements.

I take my desktop (Micro-ATX) as hand luggage all the time.

Screens is another issue. I'd just buy screens there and then re-sell them.
