Montevideo has a huge coast, but if u mean Non-capital cities, I can only say that Punta del Este has good internet (not so easy to schedule a set up with the provider tho), you can always buy a mobile modem but it only works good during non peak hours, from 9pm to like 12pm you might experience a lot of lag in some days. Other cities I dont really know.

are these numbers accurate regarding cost of living: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living...ayCurrency=USD

how much more expensive is the city compared to lets say buenos aires (if you have $ and get "street rate" there)? or compared to rio, some european capital, whatever.

how much is a 2BR gonna cost in a decent area in montevideo (incl. electricity/water/heating/inet)? any idea what kind of budget would be required at the minimum if you split a 2 BR and eat out occasionally?

It's medium to low quality. You can get better, it's all a matter of networking, sooner or later you'll find a dealer that has what you want. Though the legal situation regarding marijuana is and still is changing, in mostly good ways. Self cultivation might become legal pretty soon, even though it's not legal yet more and more people are already getting into it, some rl friends included. So soon there's going to be much more variety in the mix.

Those numbers seem to be pretty accurate, though I wouldn't rely on them so much when it comes to Rent and Apartment prices.

And "Median Monthly Disposable Salary (After Tax) 825.87 $" is very weird imo.

I believe Buenos Aires is much cheaper than Montevideo atm.

Ive found these 2 sites I dont know if there are better resources out there. If anyone else wants to add to the rental options down there that would be great.
Mostly just looking at them to get a feel of pricing do people living there think these sites give a good idea of that?

Hey,

just read all 11 pages, helpful info. However I didn't find what I am looking. It seems there is obvious choice if you want place with awsome nightlife, live poker and just action in genera.

What would be the best place if you're looking for opposite?Still safe and near to beach but very calm and peaceful in general.Obviosuly should have place where you could buy a food and have internet but that would be pretty much all requirements of civilization

Thanks

La Pedrera would be a good choice, search some pics on the web. Not sure if I would live near the beach in Uruguay during the winter, from september to april it's fine.

Wow,nice place!

Though 2011 population there was 225 which should mean that everyone is familiar with each other. You probably don't live there but would you think locals would be friendly to a guy from abroad?

Totally, tourism has to be their main activity and uruguayans are generally friendly.

Best neighborhood of Montevideo to live and why?

Bump from the dead.

I'd be looking for just the overall best baller quality of living. My initial instinct was to find something in Montevideo but on second thought after reading through the thread it seems like Punta Del Este is the place to be. I'd be looking for a nice apartment, nice restaurants, nice beaches, nice people, things and activities. Perhaps girls too if I ever got back on that grind. The live poker thing only available in Punta Del Este sounds like a small bonus even though that rake sounds killer.

If I move to Uruguay prob making the move in 8-12ish months and staying there for 1-2 years... its presently my new number one pick, so if I make it and anyone is down there I love to hang out and will meet up with whoever any time.

i've never lived there but unless you are into some really specific stuff (the best surf spots, really calm beach with access to hiking or some **** like that) your best option is punta del este without any doubt..
it's an awesome city you won't regret.. the offseason is quite quiet and slow but that's not necessarily a bad thing.. during peak season it's full of argentinians and brazilians

Hi, im from uruguay and Ive lived most of my life here. Punta del este is DEAD offsummer, with a lot of rain and wind, so meeting a lot of people is out of the question, you wont be seeing much people but the locals, who arent that many (a lot of locals come from Maldonado to work during summer, making it even more deserted during winter). I suggest you pay it a visit for a short period before you make the move to see if you can adjust to the lifestyle. Me personally I cant, since I like cosmopolitan cities and I like to see a lot of people in the street. During non-holiday season, imo, Montevideo is the only choice. Check it out for yourself, but do not expect mexican-like beaches unless you go on december-february.

cheers

Argentina's options for beaches aren't that great and Uruguay has some pretty nice ones.

Also just comparing Buenos Aires to Uruguay, the people in Uruguay on average are nicer/more chilled. (i don't think this is true for all parts of Argentina, but for a lot of people Argentina=BA)

Personally I prefer Argentina overall, but I think those would be the reasons for choosing Uruguay.

I've never lived but have vacationed in both places, so am by no means an expert.

As PewPew mentioned, for many people BA = Argentina, and like Parisian's, people from BA (referred to as "Portenos") have the reputation of being arrogant & snobbish. Like rich Americans who live in NYC, they think the world revolves around BA. Like the USA, Argentina is a big country, so BA should no more be considered representative of the entire country anymore than NYC should be of USA. That said, I'm sure the large % of foreigners who live in Argentina end up in BA.

IMO the people from Uruguay are more relaxed / friendly than Argentina. However, I can't imagine many foreigners would want to live anywhere in Uruguay other than Montevideo, and Montevideo is no where near as interesting or cosmopolitan as BA.

Yes, Punte del Este would be an amazing place for a younger person to live during season, but it is super expensive during high season (good luck finding a reasonably priced place to live), & deserted & boring during the off-season.

Not sure what the poker scene is like there, but maybe worth considering Santiago, Chile??

Well ill be calling uruguay home starting in september. im still struggling between picking montevideo or punta but ill visit both for 1-2 weeks before i pick a place to settle. seems like montevideo is the lower variance, safer and better play for year round living from the folks ive talked to though there is just this allure that makes punta attractive.

if anyone is down there and wants to hang out, be sure to hit me up. ill be doing the LAPT in punta and other LAPTs through the seasons so ill be in whatever scene that is.

Any poker players down in Uruguay and surfing? I'm looking to move from Cabo to Uruguay within the next few months. I want to basically live on the beach right by a good surf spot with barrels (I'm a boogie boarder) ..... please let me know.

I'm also very interested in local, organic food... farmers markets... high quality restaurants. Nearby good nightlife with sexy girls is always a huge plus.

Just read a few posts here, and I'm seeing that supposedly the internet is crappy in Uruguay? That would be a total disaster for me. I need fast internet connection and good back ups. IF anyone who lives down there and/or has in the past and has a bunch of info on these topics, I'd really appreciate your help.

idk about sponging, but surf isn't too great in uruguay. afaik brazil wins in every way if comparing the 2

internet is fine in any city - where did you hear it was 'crappy'? food will be better/healthier in both brazil or argentina. you better love meat and alot of it in Uruguay. decent nightlife in a couple places but both brazil and BA are gonna win on that as well. Girls is a lot of opinions, but argie or brazil are gonna beat out uruguay for that as well. I don't mean to get down on uruguay, its a nice mellow place - I've heard it described as 1950's america and seems like a good place to chill out - plus it has famous high-class beach town of punta del este in the high season. It should not be considered for a surfing/nightlife/foodie/chicks destination though, imho

Internet is overall good, one of the finest in South America -fact- but on the good places to surf might not be the best as theyre small towns by the shore.

The places were most of the surfing takes place down here are on the easternmost departmento of the country called Rocha.

You can find some of the best waves in the country afaik on these places: La Paloma, Punta del Diablo or La Pedrera. Theres also a surfing scene on Punta del Este, in the departamento of Maldonado, you probably heard of this one before and is a medium sized city really posh and expensive.

All these places mentioned before are really quiet and isolated during chilly/cold months (april-november), ideal to be alone and chill out, but get really crowded during summertime full of young people willing to party with huge clubs opening for the season and several parties on the street springbreak style.

Feel free to ask away any further questions you might have! Cheers
