Just want to give a little correction

Rent:

500 USD up for a house or condo unit.

Around 80~200 USD for a room in Cebu and 100~300 in Manila.

Food :

If you cook: around 60~100 USD a month(per person)
Take out/Eat out: 300 USD+ a month(per person)

If you want to live somewhere cheaper, i suggest Vietnam.

People there are friendly and the yearly living expense is less than 4k USD.

this is borderline dangerous advice for newcomers to Manila, basically if you value your life you WANT to pay 500+$ a month for a condo in good area of the city

Have you ever actually lived anywhere else than a $500+/month condo in a good area of the city yourself though? Do you have personal experience with living 'in the ghetto of Manila?' Or are you just feeling/assuming it's the end of the world for any first world guy who might choose to live there?

Eh...I've lived in the ghetto of Manila before, stayed in a room even less than $100/month, used to walk the streets at night all the time and never once had any trouble.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure...but then again so is yours.

Also not trying to call Burns out but just stating the facts...pretty sure he likes to dress in a way that makes it clear he ain't busto, and I think he was robbed like 2/3 a.m. in the morning, hell Canadian cities are dangerous at 2/3 a.m.

...Also Burns is like super skinny/scrawny so that combined with dressing nice makes him an overly easy/obvious target for getting robbed.

Point is he's not the best example to use to say 'oh look Metro Manila is super dangerous for foreigners.'

I was thinking about Vietnam, but I read in the thread that the internet is very bad, and people do not like tourists

Does live poker is a main factor?if not..go to Jogjakarta,Indonesia..cheap accommodation, fast internet and better infrastructure plus it's well known students town,so everything a bit student price..(and you'll love the culture there)

PS. One of the seven/eight wonder of the world is near there

but you live more busto than 99.363% in the civilized world, and it shows in one way or another so you fly under the radar, giving the same advice to random poker players that might be moving here for the first time is not very smart.
In a way I agree with you about Burns yeah, but poker players are typically burns way more often than you.

Every place I stayed in Vietnam, including phu quoc, had good enough Internet to grind.

Happygo, itt: if ever there were a time to not try to save money on accommodation in Philippines it's now. Normally I'd think it's a bit silly but now I'd call it straight stupid. This is especially true for someone coming here for their first time with the goal of partying for a week and finding a lot of women.

Yeah, it was more the general 'fear of the poor,' thing I was going off against. I think it's something people worry about and blow out of proportion in the world in general.

But it is true that with what is going on in Manila right now, with Duterte's drug war it probably would be a better idea to play it safe and stay in a more secure more well off area of the city.

Also didn't see the part where the dude was just coming for a week to party and get laid. If that's the case lol at staying in the cheapest possible place anyway...I just figured we were talking about some busto 10/25nl grinder who is trying to stretch every penny as far as possible and wants to stay for a while.

To thank Bluegrassplayer had read that the internet was something wrong, and not speaking English.
Indeed, the issue of security is not that I worry a lot, eh lived in several South American countries, and we must be careful at night, and set where walking.
if they could choose an Asian country where you can live with 800USD month, women, partying 1 or 2 times a week, and rent a small apartment, which would be the best? (I know it's a difficult choice and very personal)

how exactly do you expect to party 1-2 times a week on 800$ life budget, a country like that doesnt exist unless your definition of a night out is way different than mine.

If you remove that then Chiang mai would probably be good for you, its the cheapest city among the good ones.

ive lived on 850 a month in angeles, cebu, snooky, and could do so in phnom penh also

bangkok would take 1050

manila maybe 1100-1300

no i dont 'party' but that is with a 300ish a month hooker budget in some spots, ive had some boring ass months in angeles where i lived on 600

you dont need to spend 500 a month in cebu, my rent was about 400 and definitely could have found cheaper and been safe

manila i'd say you are going to want to spend at least 20k on a condo right now with all the drug/violence stuff going on, but thats like 450.... u could possibly even find for like 18k or 16k

ranking them solely on cheapness i would say

snooky
pp
angeles
cebu
bangkok
manila

on value id say

cebu
bangkok
angeles
manila
snooky
pp

when ranking bangkok that high that is for apartment/infrastructure/quality internet and not really factoring in that thai people suck

of course without a copy of my budget ebook itll be much harder to reach that 800 level

edit to add bangkok could be done cheaper u will just have to live far away from the nightlife and waste a lot of time on the bts

jakarta could be done cheap if you stay in a kost, not if you stay in an apartment

hcmc could be done very cheap, but i wasnt really able to figure that place out in my month there, if you want a serious girlfriend it would be a great spot, if you dont then it probably wouldnt

cambodia is great value if you drink alcohol.

how could sihanoukville by poor value? if it wasn't for the casinos, i could easily survive on $20 per day excluding hotel.

because it has the worst infrastructure, power outages, streets that flood from moderate rain, the worst food, and no medical care around

but the beers are cheap and so are the hotels, girls not even that cheap anymore

food in cambodia is fine, just a little more expensive than thailand for local food. in sihanoukville you can eat fresh fish or crab for very reasonable prices.

you are thinking like a tourist not like a person who lives there

seafood fries and salad gets old pretty quick

i went back to cambo this year.... it is by far the worst spot in SEA.... some of the food i was served literally made me lol

the curries were often milder than thailand (you could get really spicy of course), but the ingredients were all fresh and decent quality. i had good vietnamese in cambodia too.

maybe you need to stay away from places like the chat n chew.
