I also know people that can blow 10k usd a month, and they aren't getting much value either.

For a foreigner expat, I would say the following is likely:

Housing 18k
Transportation (2 taxis a day) 6k
Food (groceries, don't buy imported stuff) 5k
Eating out (twice a week, moderate price) 2.5k
Dates (once a week, movie and snack) 4k
Laundry, sundry, etc 3k
Utilities (power and water) 5k
Internet 1k
Phone 300

Total 44.8k or about 1000 usd.

Let me know if I forgot any item, sort of in a rush to get to a meeting.
Seems like a pretty reasonable budget, depending on how comfortable you want to stay/live obviously. EXCEPT for the groceries imo, 5000 won't get you far. That's less than I pay per week. Maybe if you're a vegetarian...

I spend way too much on groceries, my problem is that I tend to do grocery shopping when I'm hungry (after gym), and then I buy too many things I never get to eat, think I spend 20-25k a month on food and I'm an awful cook lol.

If you are looking sub 1k Usd a month in expenses, there is no way your taste should have you spending more than 5k in groceries.

5k a week is insane for a single person. You are on the total expat diet where a small box of honey nut cheerios costs you 8 Usd, or addicted to Frito Lays at 3 dollars a bag. If you are on a budget, you definitely can do it on 1250 php a week. You just can't buy imported goods.

For 1250 php you can buy;

1kg chicken 220
Two loaves of bread 75
Sandwich meat 200
Oatmeal 100
Water 50
Mangos 200
Cheese 75
Veg 200
Spreads jams mayo etc avg 100 or so

Oatmeal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, maybe chicken or other protein for dinner. Add some 7 php/pack instant noodles and you're done.

5k.. Are you eating ribeye every day of the week?

Don't really eat any bread or oatmeal or other stuff like that. Mostly meat/veggies. A lot of chicken fillet, beef (breakfast steak, t-bone, rib eye etc), salmon and other fish.

Basically eat two heavy real meals per day and then some protein drinks on top of that.

Yeah obviously if you are eating paleo then your groceries will be more expensive, wherever in the world you live. That's the main disadvantage of Paleo diets, they cost a fortune.

Still sounds a little high but if you have a big appetite and eating mainly meat.. Yeah you won't survive on 5k a month.

But 5k is definitely doable. I eat out a lot and my grocery bill is about 6k a month.

I've seen some poker degen friends surviving on 50 php a day. Instant noodles, oatmeal, jam and bread.

I got a permanent visa via investment into the Philippines. I set up some business here early on and got the visa that way.

I've been to Davao a handful of times and found it a very relaxing place.. Certainly the people were friendlier and great to hang out with. More laid back compared to Manila.. And this is where you will find some really hot Morena (brown) girls. Cost of living is low and the girls are hot, if you are into dark girls.

I would suggest Davao as a secondary stop on your trip. I would always recommend Manila first and then the other cities so you can compare.

Yep, this is obv true. Eating healthy (specially meat) is always more expensive than fast food/processed food etc. But I'm still getting away with good quality stuff for a fraction of the price I would pay back in Sweden.

But if you're on a budget you're obv better off eating oatmeal/noodles/bread/rice and whatever cheap there is to get you full :-).

What kind of business? If you don't mind sharing. I think I heard before that you can get a permanent visa by starting a business with at least 10 local employees, or something similar?

I'm Asian but grew up in North America.

Moved to the Philippines to do some business and never really left. Always something to do, so time passes really fast.

Telecom, software, advertising, real estate, retail, f&b.. I do a bit of everything, that's the nature of Manila business.

I've played poker since I was 13, so I can play pretty much anything, but my best game is probably Omaha. I play locally when I have time, at the Metro or Resortsworld... Participate in the Apt and Appt. I travel a lot so I do drop by Macau and play in the Pokerstars tourneys as well. Online I play mainly micro sng or tourneys when I'm bored or waiting for a meeting etc.. So I can donk or just quit anytime I want without losing too much.

I've got a few live trophies in my cabinet, a couple of final tables in the Saturday Omaha 55, triple digit roi in Omaha mtts, and I'm always reported as a notable player in any local tourney I play, but my dismal 2 percent roi in NLHE tells me to stick to business as my main career =)

So that's me. Hope you enjoyed it.

Yeah there is a new visa that you can get by employing ten locals. I don't know the exact details of that visa but at first glance it does not seem particularly hard to get.

SWF, who do you know and who knows you? I'm also curious and interested to meet you or have an online chat.

I'm also studying Omaha, but I play mostly hi/lo. See my O8 forum threads for the brags.

My "say goodbye to your 50" bucks attitude is just being realistic.

1. The OP has taken your money
2. The OP did not play any of the events
3. The OP has been impossible to contact
4. Nobody knows his real name LOL

Generally in life, this means you have been scammed. Chances of getting back money from a scammer (assuming they even have the capability to pay back) is very very very low.

I'm not being laissez faire about this, but you have to know when to lick your wounds and move on imho. I've given out stakes previously to friends, and I treat it just as a loan to any friend, I write it off the moment it leaves my hand. As an investment, staking is generally one of the worst investments you can make as:

1) You pay a huge premium off the top (markup)
2) Generally is a verbal agreement and difficult to enforce if anything goes wrong
3) Massive human factor (how does he feel that day of play)
4) All the skill in the world doesn't help you much to survive variance (ie. need massive bankroll)

And my personal favorite, why does the player need a stake in the first place? He's either a losing player overall, or such a degen/bad at money management that he's a massive risk to lose/steal the money anyways.

But then, do what you will with your money, it's none of my business.

But ya, better kiss that 54$ goodbye =)

You're actually right about one thing.

Hi, I'm assuming you are gumasta, the guy who shipped the 2,100 NLO8 Scoop?

I saw an article about you on Pokermanila .. well done.

As to who I know, I'm assuming you are talking about the poker scene in Manila .. well, I know all the tds, lloyd, bear, odeck, bryan etc, and most of the well known pros would either know me, recognize me, on on my facebook, Manila is a small place .. ie the rivera boys, lester, jojotech, tolon, etc. If you play any tournies you will run into them often, although whether they think I'm good or a total fish I have no idea, I've never asked. I'm also on pretty good terms with the Pokerstars Macau management and know the guys over at Poker King as well. The SWF handle is pretty new, so they won't know me by this nick.

I like PLO8 as well, but I don't play a lot of NLO8/FLO8.

Angeles City is a 3rd world ****hole city so there is like 2 or 3 real dentists in town.

Michelle @ Bonifacio Dental has good reputation among expats.

You can eat super cheap by buying a sack of rice and eating tinned tuna, will probably take years off your life expectancy though.

Me and my friend have been using this clinic:
http://smilemakeoverdentalclinic.com/

It's across the street next to Jollibee on Clarkview, very modern and clean, but also pricey.
