to be honest if I was in your shoes I would focus on getting better at poker. ie grind online/live put in tons of hours. build that roll up. get your hourly rate up. Realize that you're a crushing poker player.

also I've been to manila 2x. I wouldn't recommend it for first time solo visitors. you really need a local to show you the ropes IMO its just such a big city might overwhelm you.

ive played poker in macau, manila, florida, vegas and vancouver. sure the games might be slightly better than in asia ( for the record i prefer games in north america NO smoking at the table, plus I have better understanding of the flow of the game). but remember your far away from home. away from your element. their will be tons of unexpected expenses the first month or 2 that could very well put a huge dent in your roll. I've learned this through experience.

if you do plan on going through with this K2D. I would recommend doing this for the experience. For the joy of travelling and seeing different part of the world. For making money wise, adding some digits to your bank account. It seems like a very bad idea.

I think Mexico is a sensible alternative too, and i'm considering it myself as a 1st step to a bigger move to the PI,

1. Even though I am rolled for PI
2. Have been there 2x, have been around, and STILL feel like I will be a little culture shocked next time I land
3. Could survive for at least 6 months even if I make zip playing poker

k2d, I've read through this entire thread. I think if theres any one thing that hasn't been stressed enough, the culture shock, being under-rolled, and the pressure to live on that underfunded bankroll could(and probably would) be too much pressure for anyone.

The PI experience is truly psychedellic to a Westerner, especially the type of guy you describe yourself to be on this forum... I think you'd have a much better shot if you could save up another 3-4k minimum.. but that's even bare bones. Either way, good luck and I won't push anymore unsolicited advice at you.

K2d, $7k is plenty. The chances of you not making it are <5%. And the <5% worst case scenario involves you flying back home to live with parents, yes?

may as well spend a few nights here, get a cheap hotel and head straight for the poker rooms at the very least i would imagine you'd be instantly covering your hotel and food, plus can spend a few hours per day walking the streets, taking it in and seeing if it suits you. Land and earn imo.

Whatever you expect your monthly budget to be once you have yourself all set up, the first few weeks and months when you are getting used to this new country, finding a place, getting set up, finding your way around, you should always expect to spend more during this time then you will once you are set up. I'd set aside a separate budget just for this time period actually.

Your doing this on 7k kind of makes me want to go back there myself. I'm on about 9.5k right now, and am planing on going back to SE Asia (probably Thailand but maybe Phills,) soon. I was going to wait maybe another few months - half a year to save up more money, but maybe I should just go now.

I've spent way more money than expected the last two weeks I've been in Manila. It's not the room rate or poker that's hurting me, but the taxis, western food, bars, girls (naughty and nice) adding up to be more than I expected to sustain the lifestyle I want to live.

I lived like a hermit in Korea and finally excited to be out again where chicks are interested in me, but I never expected Manila to be this expensive with so many distractions. Plus the wifi here sucks ass, the phone lines drop calls constantly and there's always some scam going on in everything.

What's the point of living in Manila if you're not going to enjoy what it has to offer, might as well live in the USA.

Well as I mentioned earlier itt i think its pretty lame here on the degen front, so other than a few hookers in AC i have just been juggling a few regular chicks. I wont be here for much longer, i just got back from 4 days in Pattaya and proper miss it now. Will be looking to move back to bkk and will carrying on living between there and patts. I have forgiven Thailand for pissing me off now.

Agree i enjoy AC for about 5 days then it gets a bit like groundhog day, as there is not much else to do there other than barhop and chase hookers. I guess there are the afternoon tournaments or the nightly cash games if you enjoy paying 10% rake and being colluded against by the locals.
