Says he likes the beach and although Pattaya bay does have a bad rep for the sea there, there are several smaller, quieter much cleaner beaches around.

Anyway like i say he seems to have his heart set on PI so leave him to it.

Being the most densely populated city on earth i think you might be onto something there.

ok might have had you confused with someone else saying cebu was an option as you liked being by the sea.

....... And you dont think a filipino cooked that meal at TGI Fridays? Depending where you have been raise food will always taste different when you go to another country. This is more true if you are from here in the US where everything is heavily dosed with preservatives.

Philippines is also a mixture of different groups of asian culture mostly malaysian, chinese, vietnamese, the local people before the great migrations and offcourse some other asians from other places. This is why if you actually travel from different parts of the country you will notice a difference in facial features as well as different dishes. Anyone wonder why Philippines has the most number of different dialect than any country?

If a filipino/filipina really cant cook why would President Bill Clinton's executive chef ask as a filipina who grew up and educated in philippines to be a chef for the clintons in the white house? And if she was not good enough why would President George Bush promote her as the executive chef and for that matter why would the Obamas retain her?

Hard to say which I prefer really, pluses and minuses for both. The fact they speak reasonable English was a massive plus for me, you can actually have a proper chat and a good laugh with them. For those just looking for a shag I reckon it makes no difference probably, but I think for anyone looking for something more like a GF etc I would say phils.

That said I was only there for just shy of a month so I know relatively little about phils girls and what other issues there could be I might not uncover as a tourist.

Maybe so, but at TGI's it was still cooked with western tastes in mind and they would have been trained by either a western chef of one who have proven standards in western cooking from the TGI's franchise.

The simple fact remains is that a lot of filipino food does not suit the western palate, and I did give it a fair crack when I was there. Whilst I had the odd decent western meal it was mostly not up to par and seriously lacking in flavour.

As for Clinton's cook do you seriously think she has not been trained to a high western standard most likely in the west?

........ Her education was primary from phlippines until she moved to the US when she was 23. She never actually went to school in the US as a chef from what i understand but she did work as a chef here in the US and a brief period in vienna.
I understand what you mean by western taste... it is the same with the chinese resturants here in the US it isnt ethinic chinese the same goes for taco bell it isnt mexican either.
If a person from a 3rd world country came to the US they would think the meat product here taste funny and would have to get use to it due to all the preservatives and heavy medications they have had.
I myself can eat almost anything so never had any trouble except maybe for some of the fishes (im a seafood person) in italy where it somehow seem like they have mutated. I've been to many places hungary, albania, afghanistan, jordan, singapore, thailand, kosovo, egpyt, dubai, qatar (favroite ethinc resto was a small thai resto run by thai family). Here in the US i have had never had a goat or lamp but if your ever in any middle eastern country that would be two of there main meat product. And if you only have a taste for western meal then those would really turn your stomach altough i enjoyed them greatly.
When you say lack of flavor that isnt true. what Filipino/asian dishes use alot of different natural flavors. They are just not what your taste budsare use too.

I love most filipino food. the only thing i can't handle is some of the fish. danggit was some of the nastiest stuff i've ever put in my mouth. but you get a good adobo or sinigang and it's excellent.

americans (i can't speak for other westerners) are very used to eating beef in general and the meat in philippines is much better when you choose pork or chicken. just my opinion of course. lechon is ****ing delicious.

In res ponse to Vucking Vish:

Yes, I am but was raised in your western food and living the western life since I was 2. I have lived in many parts of N. America, Europe, Asia and lived in and traveled all over the Middle East. I am open minded enough to realize that besides my Asian heritage and western up-bringing that there are other cultural out there besides my own.

Yes, there are some things to be proud about being an American. And if you are truly an American do you think I am less of an American than you are? And please don’t give me the ******ed answer that you are white and I am not. America is the name given to this country and people living within its borders legally are called Americans regardless of race or creed.

Now, if you are a Ku Klux Klan supporter, well they where just a bunch of white folks from the bottom of the barrel who could not accept that someone of another race was up-stepping them in life.

What I don’t understand is that you find the country not to your liking but you are still there. Seems that you might be the typical westerner who travels to 3rd world countries with a narrow mind who compares themselves to the millions of people living in poverty not realizing that behind those hidden walls are millions more who have more than you do.

To the 2+2 community I want to say yes, I am a pinoy and no I don’t care that any of you choose to travel there and don’t care for what reason either if its to play poker or the women. What I cant stand are close minded people going there who have these big egos who thinks places, thing or people are inferior because it is not of a western design or western culture or race.

Do online players even realize that a pinoy born and raise there that was so poor he had walked to school barefoot is partially responsible for making it possible for computers to be built smaller and cheaper allowing us to have affordable computers and laptops. You sure wouldn’t be grinding online would you? No this isn’t a brag because I am someone special. I just think that it is important for people to have a broader outlook in life and realize that everything doesn’t revolve around them.

Filipino food has a bad rep, but a lot of dishes are quite good imo. I really enjoy good adobo, inasal, liempo, tocino, nilaga, and sinigang if it's not too sour. The thing about the Philippines is that you can't just walk into any restaurant randomly and expect to get good food like in Malaysia or Thailand. You have to do a bit of research and find the well-reviewed places.

Mate don't take it personally, I was just winding you up a bit lol, but I still didn't really like the food that much, that's not a sin surely? Admittedly I was only there a few weeks and pretty much gave up on the local food half way through.

Not that it matters that much but I have travelled around a hell of a lot, probably more than 98% of people and have experienced food from all over, and its the only country where I genuinely struggled with the food.

FWIW I really enjoyed the Phils, the people (I mixed with the locals a lot a spent a few days with one particular family), the culture, the sights and saw loads of great stuff and would go back in a heartbeat, the food was the only negative I found tbh.

So don't take my criticism of the food to heart, I enjoyed the place and will be back. :-)

I come here for a laugh and a joke as well as to chat about travelling so that is me, no offence intended mate, if our paths ever cross I'll happily share a beer with you :-)

That exchange right there was something that caught my attention wrt why you need to be careful in the Philippines. Filipinos are incredibly passionate about defending themselves about lots of things (especially their "name" whatever meaning that holds) and if you go over there unprepared and open your mouth too much, even in jest, you may soon find yourself in a fight. And a fight with a filipino is not likely to be 1 on 1. More like 10 on 1. And this doesn't even consider the police bribes you'll need to pay on the other end.

Just some food for thought.

Were all passionate about our countries mate, but yes your right the fight situation is pretty much the same in most parts of asia that I've been, and your gonna be in the deep doo doo if u get into one.

I suppose I'm used to gobbing off on the Thailand threads and getting away with it as no Thais go on those threads to pull me up

I think to really appreciate and enjoy PI you need to put the time and patience into finding out exactly whats what, where as Thailand you kinda rock up get off the place and everyone knows your name.

...... Yes, I may have been defensive but wouldnt you if I said something about your heritage? All, I was saying is that people need to be more open to other cultures. In regards to who I was having my argument with it is possible he didnt get a full taste of all the filipino dishes. If you had 100 different family here in the US cook the same dish would they all taste the same? All provinces in philippines have their dishes and if you only visited a small local resto or eat with a family then offcourse that doesnt reflect on the nation since your only getting a small sample.
I've been in a few fights here in the US and they were never fair. It has always been me against some wana be gang members or crew of boyz. I also did get into a fight there in manila bay area during my last visit with a guy who tried to lift my wallet. I knocked him down and police officers not far of came over dragged him to their booth and proceeded to beat him with their night sticks.
Corruption is found in any country, the difference is that in 3rd world countries they practiced them more openly. In the western world everything is done behind close doors. How many politicians did Obama bribe do you think to get his agendas passed these last few years? Goes the same with lobbyiest (however that is spelled) do you think they dont bribe to get what they want? Just becuase it isnt happening in plain few doesnt mean it isnt happening.

99% of all expats I know or meet that has been to the Philippines, the biggest complaint is the local food. Sorry but the numbers don't lie. Sweet spag? Unless you like vinegar and soya sauce the local dishes are pretty limiting. I have lived in Asia for 10 years and I would say food is the biggest issue for expats in the Philippines. Like others have said you can't just walk in to the local joint and feel confident you will get a great meal for your pesos, like you can in Thailand or Malaysia. Sure I like adobo, tocino, etc, and some of the other dishes but the salt levels and sugar levels in things is over the top in most dishes. Sweet or Salty? those are your 2 choices...

That being said I am still living here and loving every minute of it.
