male cab drivers. i'd learn it to speak to them if i lived there. directions and small talk.

it massively lowers the chance of getting messed around somehow in thailand when you speak to them in their language, so i assume it's the same in Phils.

in Thailand it's small things like wanting a flat rate, going the wrong way etc.

in Phils well a few weeks ago a guy in this thread was driven to a dark back alley under a bridge and told to hand over thousands of pesos... so yeah

girl in cebu i met would address drivers as 'kuya' for example and chat a bit

and kuya is one of the more annoying words here, u cant just call every male you come in contact with kuya

I use kuya. It's totally appropriate and I've seen a 50 year old filipino senior director use it.

Taxi drivers is another one. Especially if you are using grab taxi. Once in the cab you can generally just point, but for expressing more complicated directions it's been a life saver multiple times.

Seems like they use 'sir' more with foreigners than they do kuya, but it might depend on how well they know you or what the situation is.

Certainly in malls and retail type situations I always get sir.

Can't remember being called kuya too many times.

Certainly I see the Filipinos call other Filipinos kuya a lot. Or 'ate' if they are referring to a female obviously.

In my experience the "mostly tagalog" taxi drivers are actually okay, just say clearly where to go and check that the meter is reset. IMO it's the taxi drivers that know pretty well English that are trying to sell you some "extra fee cuz lot of traffic" bull****. But I am not that much in Manila so maybe too small sample size.

And yeh saying kuya to any random Filipino (and ate to Filipina), even as foreigner, is pretty normal and probably even respectful. It's just not common for them to say it to foreigners.

how crazy is weather there June-August?

It seems varied from region to region, but like August for Manila I see average 19 days of rain, really? Is it an all day event or quick powerful afternoon storm that clears up within an hour?

Internet is same around country or anywhere miles better than the rest of the place. Not sure if I'll start out in Manila or Cebu yet, any large discrepancies between the two?

When I was there last august...it would rain really badly everyday for about an hour. Then become really hot for a few hours. Then it would just randomly rain loads again for an hour.

As far as the internet goes, I highly suggest you purchase the latest Smart 4g pocket wifi (especially if you intend on being nomadic), which usually gets you 1-18 Mbs (which is great for PHL) depending on location/server. Both Manila and Cebu (I grinded from 5-6 different locations in Cebu and never had any issues with the wifi).

I would recommend Cebu over Manila, then again, I have no idea what your preferences are... (would also recommend many remote locations before any of those 2...). GL

June-August are the absolute worst months to travel here for pleasure. If you want nice weather, take every other month of the year.

i think rainy season is kinda overrated, its the same as visiting florida, for an hour-ish a day it rains...... and then maybe 2 or 3 days a year it rains non stop and really inconveniences you

I was killing time on reddit and this guy was doing an AMA...

He took shrooms and during / after started some semi successful site (8ch.net)

Turns out he has moved to the Phils - has a 24/7 aid now and even better:

'I quickly realized that efficiency is not really a priority here, so learning patience is paramount.'

'Funny experiences...one time I wanted some cough drops, so I sent my aide. She came back, no cough drops. I was still coughing though so I said I wanted to come with her and make sure. I asked the attendant for cough drops, "sorry we don't have". Behind her there were Halls. I said what are those. "Cough suppresant sir". I think that goes back to patience.'

I mean, isn't that a more apt name for them though.

cough eliminators or cough stoppers would be better still.

But certainly cough suppressant is a more apt name than cough drops.
