How would you compare Manila, Cebu, and Davao?

Are any of you living in these cities (or have any of you lived in these cities)? What did you like/dislike about it?

+1 for the Fort, some high end bars and resturants. It can be a little bit stale as an enivronment ie it could be any high street in western europe. Quite a few expats there.

Does anybody have experience staying in Hotels in Cebu?
I'm looking for one with a solid internet connectin and just decently nice. Price is not that important but doesn't have to be the most expensive one.

I stayed here and was happy with it, good location close to the nightlife of mango square. Internet seemed fine, but I wasn't grinding pokers when I was there.

i've stayed two places there. Marco Polo Cebu and Cebu Parklane International. Both were fine. Marco was nicer. They're both on the city side of things as opposed to the beach side where shangri-la and such are. it's about a 30-45 minute cab ride out to the beach depending on traffic.

back in AC as of last night. the number of girls freelancing has increased dramatically in the last two years. i walked grand central to alaska and was approached by freelancers 4 times.

Be careful in AC. The other night I was going out and because my hotel had a safe I decided to put my wallet in there and just bring money. This is the first time on my vacation I've gone out WITHOUT my wallet.

Anyways, while I was walking some (ladyboy?) freelancer walked up to me, trying to make a sale. I was like "no thanks" and tried to keep walking but she followed me for a moment "why not?" he/she asked, which is also par for the course.

What I did not expect was to get pickpocketed...I immediately knew what was happening but he/she grabbed the money so fast I wasn't able to grab him. I took chase but my damn flip flops and the 1 second head start were too much. By the time I chased him around the corner he'd vanished like some goddamn magic trick.

Had a bit of money stolen from me, but it could have been much much worse if I'd had my wallet. My only ATM card is in there along with my other credit cards and significantly more cash. That's the first and only time I've gotten pickpocketed, and I think I'm sort of lucky I didn't have shoes on. Because if I did I'd have caught the person (probably) and done something stupid (maybe) and had gotten in trouble.

All in all I estimate I lost between 40 and 60$ US, though I didn't count exactly how much money from my wallet I shoved into my pocket. A few thousand PHP.

This is another story I saw on a forum the other day........

Gang of Kids Operating Near Lewis Grand Hotel

These thieves have been reported on several local bulletin boards.

I saw my masseuse at the Horizon Inn tonight and we finish at about an hour after sunset. The massage place is about half a mile from downtown so I decide to walk down to MacArthur Highway and back just to stretch my legs a bit. As I round the first bend, I see a group of kids maybe fifteen strong, walking about a hundred feet in front of me. The oldest is perhaps fourteen and the youngest is about six with the majority of the kids (there is at least one girl in the group) about ten years old.

My alarms are ringing slightly as I and another guy, who's about a step ahead of me, enter the group. I've never seen such a large gathering of street children. They are completely filthy and have that Oliver Twist rags look. No doubt they are hungry and desperate for food, but they are just kids, none of them weighting more than one hundred and ten pounds, so I step into the group and we walk together. They are all around me for about twenty yards. The guy that was with me initially has put on a burst of speed and is just outside the front of the pack. As we move from a well lighted gas station (Petron) to a dark spot, four of the middle sized kids jam themselves around me making it hard to walk. My first reaction is to cover my wallet with one hand and cell phone with the other, which works for the moment, but allows me no hands to defend myself with. It's at this point that the biggest kid steps in front of me and wraps his hands around my waist bringing my forward motion to a complete stop. The rest of the kids start to press in and I realize I am going to have to take my hands out of my pockets sooner or later and that these kids are going to rob me. I know the plan is to force me to defend myself so the rest of the pack can jam their hands into every pocket that might have something of value in it. So without much thought I take my hands out of my pockets and launch the biggest kid back about three feet and simultaneously start yelling in a deep voice "Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!" thinking this is a lot like a pack of dogs and that I've got to stun them into inaction with my voice. Magically they back off about a foot and this gives me space to start moving again. I manage to get out in front of them and continue my walk. A quick check of my pockets and I've still got everything. I think the big shove I gave the oldest boy got spooked them a bit.

Now, when I yelled "Hey!" I yelled it as loudly as a could, and I know the guy in front of me had to hear, he wasn't more than ten yards ahead of me but he never turned around and in fact seemed to pick up his pace. As I pull away from the kids I can feel my anger toward him start to simmer. *******, would have let those kids rob me, cowardly bastard. I'm pissed but keep walking until I get to the highway and then I turn around and head back the way I came.

About twenty minutes later I look up and see the same gang in the same dead spot on the road. They have picked up a few more kids and it looks like the group has gotten bigger, maybe 20 kids now. I consider crossing the street, but I can be stupid about some things and decide that I'm not going to be afraid of these kids. I live here and will have to walk past them in the future and it doesn't seem like a good precedent to start dodging them. So I transfer my wallet and my cellphone into one pocket and kept going.

As I approach the group I pass a foreigner about 40 years old. He's built on the lighter side and weighs maybe 150 pounds. He's about two steps behind me when we hit the kids and again they start to swarm around us, but this time he is getting a good bit of it too. I say to him in English, "Watch out for these kids," or words to that effect, and we make brief eye contact. I can see that he's uncomfortable and in an effort to escape the pack he tries to force his way through the front of the group. This is when the biggest kid comes up from behind him and wraps his arms around him. The rest of the mobs closes in and now six of the larger kids are holding onto him, and because he still has his hands in his pockets, they drag him off the sidewalk onto the side of the Lewis Grand Hotel.

At this point I've been released, the hyenas have their prey and the group starts to move in for the kill. All they have to do is get him to take his hands out of his pockets and there are enough of them to get his money and his phone. One or two of them will get hit if he can force himself to hit a kid half his size, but the payoff for the gang is huge and the reward is worth the risk. A big part of me wants to keep walking and let this play out behind me, but I stop and look where they have him off the street. I'm about 30 feet from him when he says rather quietly, (like he doesn't want it to ask) "help me". I still don't move and we look at each other, the kids are looking at me too, and then he says it again in the same quiet tone, "help me."

I am undecided when I remember the guy that picked up speed when it was my turn in the barrel, and I know I can't let these kids rob the guy if I am going to have any respect for myself. Once the decision is made everything unfolds on its own. I charge into them screaming at the top of my lungs. I sound like a maniac, the kids jump back a few feet releasing him. I tell him to watch his wallet and we head for the street together. The pack closes in again but we are shoulder to shoulder now and it's harder to stop us. I have to push the oldest kid away a few times but because all my valuables are in one pocket I have a hand free to do this. We make it to the street and then up to the gas station where they melt away with pleas for money. The older one tells us he's hungry, and then we are through them.

It turns out the guy is German, and he thanks me. I'm ashamed that it took two requests for help before I stepped in, so I say "I thought you were kidding at first." He looks at me like he knows what really happened and he says "thank you" again, and something like "I've been here for four days and it's never been unsafe to walk there before". And then he is at his hotel and we part company.

I'm glad the first guy failed the test so that I didn't. It's really easy to keep walking.

Thanks for the tip, Dante.

I am starting to believe in Carson Daily's philosophy he coined called "Karma". It means if you do good things good things will happen to you. It may seem like getting pick pocketed is a bad thing but I was incredibly lucky to have it happen on the one time in my entire 2.5 month vacation where I did not have my wallet.

Earlier that night a young boy no older than 10 asked me for money. As usual I told him no. He said he was hungry, to which I replied I'll buy you food. He wanted ice cream. Nope, something a bit more nutritious. Ice cream, he repeated stubbornly. I wanted to get him something he would actually eat, and I know children wouldn't hesitate to throw away a salad because they can be little ****s at time. So I got something in between, a Pizza. At least it has protein and calcium and calories to help get him through the night.

Later I would be robbed though it was far less damaging than if I'd had my wallet. Also it would have probably been worse for me if I'd caught the perpetrator, either by he having a weapon or me doing something violent that would get me thrown in a prison. An alternative bad outcome would be me being beaten up by a gang of transgenders.

Also, does anybody know the etiquette for hitting a transgender if he/she stole your wallet? I've been raised to act in accordance with proper manners but that's something that my parents neglected to teach me. It's probably best to avoid violence all together unless you're threatened with bodily harm, but then what would I do if I caught the perp...?

That's why it may be good to wear flip flops. Also, with flip flops, you don't have to wear socks, which is convenient. And it's a bit cooler because your feet are exposed to the open air.

TLR ; Take advice from Carson Daily and flip flops rock

I wouldn't start fights with LB's unless it is in self defense. Just chalk it up to experience and move on imo. I have seen some nasty LB fights in patts, gotta remember any man who either sucks **** for a living or cuts his own **** off to be ****ed and thinks he is a woman is severely unhinged and when those ****ers flip out they go mad and stick together like ****, fight one you are fighting everyone of them in sight and they would not flinch at using weapons etc. just not worth it imo

leave bank cards in your room

bring photo copy of passport and leave the real thing in your room

if you get jacked its no loss

ive bought or given kids food a couple of times, it usually results in other kids swarming you and following you around

where else you going in PI? how long are you there for?

i had a good night in AC tonight. i'll echo to just never fight. if you're white you're always wrong and it's going to cost you a pretty penny to get out of jail. just keep yourself focused on why you're here and don't take out money you're not prepared to lose.

I have maybe 20% rate of return (or -80%) on loans made to anybody here, and none of them were for poker or gambling. I'm not white and I'm not rich.

Yeah I will be shocked if i get any of the loan back but as i say i have written off that money as a gift. If she pays any of it back its pure bonus If i could not have afford to lose that money i never would of given it. That's the real moral of the story.
