Can the 2+2 books be sent as gifts? (to avoid customs taxing) Can the 2+2 books be sent as gifts? (to avoid customs taxing)

Hey

I have received my first 5 books from 2+2, clearing the Everest bonus.
The books are really lovely but there is 1 slight discomfort: I had to pay around $50 customs tax.

Is there a way the package can be marked as a gift (no commercial value)?
I've read somewhere that they won't tax me then..

Kind regards.

You may have been charged in error. We usually mark them gifts or documents as books are duty free in most countries. Can you contact your customs dept and ask the if instructional books are duty free? If not, what is the value threshold when they start charging. The info would be helpful to us.

I finally got to them and this is what they said:

"This is a commercial mailing since there was a bill included. Mailings with value over 22 Eur will be taxed like this"

Is there nothing I can do about this?

Did you have to pay customs tax too? What country do you live in?

What bill? Just the standard/required customs form. We do not include any commercial invoice. Also, what was the declared value on your customs form? If it was $30 it is below the 22 Eur.

I have replied them, using the arguments you provided.
I see the customs form has 5 different content possibilities (gift, commercial sample, documents, returned goods, other)
Maybe it's possible to declare the content to be documents? Basically that is what the books are, right?

Gifts is usually the way to avoid the customs charges. My books were marked as [x]Gift

They should of been marked documents or gifts. We were going with documents until this thread suggested gifts. We also put the tariff code number for books on the form.

Argh... This is the response I get:

"The shipment includes a bill in your name:

Ft nr 10481-20 van conjel co c lefco

On the post form it says gift. This is a false statement and actually it's a criminal offense."

What the f***??

You never bought or paid directly for the books so how is it not a gift?

Folks buy gifts from stores all the time and have them shipped directly to the recipient.

Is it an option to not include a bill?

Here is the current procedure which seems to work for 95% of the folks. We will mark them as a gift with a $30 value. There is a tariff code which identifies the merchandise as books. The combination of the books code, the gift classification and the $30 US value should work to get the items to you duty free. We will not pack any type of invoice.

If you have any specific request on how you want the package marked/declared let us know and we will try to accommodate.
