I have a satellite ticket to $10K Aussie Millions main event. Should be a huge field this year based on other events (opening event now up to 1500+ runners) and can't wait. 8th time playing this event.
Sadly, managed to get ill two days out from the only day one flight I can play (work commitments on Mon, Tues) which leaves late reg on day 2 (Wednesday) as the only option. I've never late reg'd a tournament this size before.
Starting bank is 30k
Blinds 400/800/100 for 2 hours, then increasing to 500/1k/100 etc.
Not the ideal situation, but certainly a playable stack and there's more than the odd pro registering on day two. I understand that stacks around 37.5BB will be around half table average and possibly but not necessarily table short stack.
Standard strat for 35ish BB as I understand it is to open 2.5BB with high cards (JTs+ QJo+, position dependent ofc) that can flop stronger top pair and middle pair hands. Small suited connectors, Axs, Kxs and small-mid pairs 88- OK if closing action (completing BB), otherwise not playable. Pairs 99+ situational for open, 3!, 4!, flat/overshove etc. Still 3! premium hands to 2.5x a single open down to around 25BB, but shove up to 30BB over open+caller/s. And finally, dispense with anything above rather than doing something ridiculous in a particular spot or becoming completely predictable.
Questions:
1. What advantage do certain pros seek in late (day 2) registering an ME and are any of those advantages applicable to a journeyman local live mtt reg?
2. Any obvious flaws in my ye-olde 35BB strat above?
