PCA Championship, Bahamas, down to 20 players, hand against Moneymaker PCA Championship, Bahamas, down to 20 players, hand against Moneymaker

Played in the PCA National Championship, 130k up top, started with roughly 450 players. Down to 20 players. I’ve got 30BB and Chris Moneymaker has 35BB when we start the hand. He’s pretty playing pretty snug and not doing anything out of line. I think the blinds were at 12k/24k 3k ante.

I get KK UTG+1 and raise 2.5x, Moneymaker calls from mid position. From my perspective, he might be cold calling there with small pairs, but I’ve also got AQ, KQ, AT KJ, QJ in his range and maybe some suited connectors.

Flop comes Qd 4c 5c. (Pot: 150k)

I cbet about 90k (60%) and Moneymaker min-raises. (Pot: 330k)

I don’t feel like he’s raising me on a draw in this spot though, maybe a set, maybe AQ or KQ. But who knows, maybe the nut flush draw.

1. If i’m putting him on a Q, do I call and evaluate the turn? What do I do if another Q or an A comes?
2. Do I reraise here?
3. Is shoving in my arsenal here?

Thoughts greatly appreciated!

You screwed up the pot size, it is 177k to start the flop action (assuming you're playing 7 handed with 20 people left), and 447k on the flop after Chris raises. Doing anything other than calling or shoving on the flop is ridiculous.

If Chris has a Q I doubt he's proactively going for more value on the turn after the flop raise so IMO best option is to shove the KK and hope he calls it off with worse.

if he has 4-4 or 5-5 then you got unlucky, also in his range are K-Q, and maybe 7-6. Also wouldn't rule out Jc-10c

Is Moneymaker so bad that it will raise KQ/AQ here?

OP,

How long have you been at table with Chris? What do you think he puts you on when he throws in an "in position" min-raise given stack sizes? Sure feels like he is inducing.

I have played with CM a few times in the WSOP and I for one doubt that he has a single Q here unless it is AcQc or an unlikely KcQc. Do you have the Kc?

No idea why so many people wanna jam, you think he just has a flushdraw or Qx the majority of the time? Jamming is fine at 150/300 but at the final 20 of an mtt I'm assuming he has a hand with almost no equity or a hand better than KK here.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I did end up jamming, and Moneymaker then took his time to think it through, eventually he said he didn't think he could fold and he called with AQ. Of course another Q came on the turn and I was out and he took all of my chips to the final table!

I did shove with the best of it, but even with big hands, if you value survival, could I have called the min-raise and then when the Q comes on the turn, check and then decide what my next move is, looking at a potential fold and then picking a better spot. Remember . . we were down to 20 people, 130k up top . . I haven't ever gotten this deep in a live tournament before, I was wondering if I could have been more careful.

I was actually surprised that he called for almost of his chips in that spot.

Wow I thought he was somewhat decent nowadays. Not that the play is necessarily bad, just that he had no plan is... surprising. To be fair, he probably jams or bet/calls blank turns so flatting is similar EV even if he has exactly AQ and calls your jam every time. The only really tough card is an A, where you're not sure whether he got there or is using it as a nice bluffing card.

How is this even close? I guess it really isnt since it's more of a bad beat story. We lose to exactly one hand and we beat everything else.

Heh when I read the OP my initial thought was that he for sure has AQ/KQ. I think with these stacks it's fine to jam (pot is already big enough), if we had like 5BB more tho I'd just call and get in any non A/Q turn.
