They want to be balanced vs extremely unbalanced/bad players. It's not really a slowplay as your hand is too weak for that, but more like a careful with a one pair hand play. Might be ok vs good players who will bluff and who will make good folds etc but vs typical wsop players your advice is spot on.
You played it fine. I like your cbet, def agree to bet more than check. Both are okay. Bet more on the turn tho, you're betting ~40%, would size up a little to 2/3 pot. I like your river check and call down button easily. Button is betting ALL his bluffs (naked high card spade draws, open enders, etc), and could also be mis-value betting 2 pairs and even sets
