Lightbulb Changing Gears

Hi all, im playing a comp next month with s starting stack of 450BB and a 45 minute clock.

Just wanted to get opionions of when the best time to change gears.

In early stages are we looking to feel the table out and limp with the 6-7 suited and connectors to flop big and bust pre flop paris?

or rock up and just use our position and a stack to be tight aggressive.

at what point (in bb possibly) should we be looking to accumulate chips.

i know its never this simple and alot of poeple with troll this thread..

but i mean if we are looking to create a stack to win not just cash the event are there key points we should be looking to do this or just making the right play each and every time we get an opportuntiy.

I tend to be going broke in events with large overpairs or the top pair top kicker when i have raised pre and poeple have flatted with AA-KK

when does a chip stack in terms of BB become a push fold stack and the poker is taken out of it..

thanks all..

constructive comments only please

you don't say?

Serious answer, it's a pretty overrated overall concept.

Just play everyhand perfectly, and if vacuum profitability dictates a "change in gears" then you will end up doing it automatically.

Re: Changing Gears

The best plan of attack, is not to have a structured plan. Adapt to the 8 other players at your specific table, your position at that table, and your ever-changing image. Play a simple TAG game, never limp (and iso raise the fish that do), sporadically inject in a few airballs to your 3bet, 4bet range to give yourself a bit of balance, but for most part, keep it simple, and play pots in position. Go to shove-fold mode when you hit 20BBs...easy game

True

"Changing Gears" should be based on - Your table image and your opponents tendencies.

Identify the weak links, maybe there isa player that will put you to a lot of tough decisions postflop, so you want to play small pots against him. Maybe there is a tight passive guy who folds a lot and and plays ABC/Faceup poker, so you want to be isoing him and cbetting a high %.
Maybe you've been too active lately and need to stop stealing for a half an hour.

Right after the tournament director tells the dealers to shuffle up and deal.

Never. Short-stacked play is the essence of tournament poker and if you think it's somehow less "poker" than playing with 100bb stacks then you shouldn't play tournaments.

Both statements are true because people such as OP make "changing gears" out to be a reaction rather than a response.

Re: Changing Gears

Mmmm well suffice it to say if you play every hadn 'perfectly' you are changing gears a LOT without making a conscious decision.

that was the point.

If you try to force something "conscious" or "artificial" before the game even starts (For instance, "okay I'll play this tourney 35/25 first 100 hands, and then 15/14 next 100 hands, this will trick em into giving me action when I have the nuts, lols") which is usually what people like OP mean, then it's pretty overrated/bad.

Re: Changing Gears

Well I think there is something to be said for establishing a type of image and then playing off it
Like I'll sometimes do some non standard things in a session especially early and all the 14/11 regs at the table will play worse vs me
but in mtts I doubt thIs is a huge edge cuz u won't be at the same table w ppl that long
That said, I'll usually do a few things to concoct a laggy image
