The yolks have all the fat and pretty hefty in calories compared to the whites, and its pretty filling having 3 egg whites instead of 2 regular eggs, a difference of 100 calories. 100 calories isn't a lot, but it's one of my main snacks, so if I eat 3 eggs twice a day, that's 200 calories a day, 1400 a week.

Little things like that add up. Cream in coffee adds up. One tablespoon of mayo adds up. 2 tablespoons of dressing add up. You add all that up in the course of a week it's like throwing out an entire day's worth of calories.

It's just the way I view things. No one thing is a deal-breaker, but putting it all together can make the entire process almost easy, and they are good habits. The yolks just don't make a big difference to me in taste, so I chuck em.

Her problem isn't the difference between two eggs versus three egg whites! Its the soda, bread, pizza, beer and virtual absence of protein...

Big rocks first, then small ones

Re: You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it: Gizmo's log

I ate chicken!

I will do better tomorrow though. Today was and wasn't typical, though. It's really hard to snack right at work and then also get home and eat healthy. I'm exhausted and usually grabbing whatever whenever. I also don't drink soda unless I'm there (and the 7-ups are free). I usually never drink beer (last time I drank was beginning of June and before that May, so once a month on average?).
I do eat a lot of pizza when I come home from work though. :/
Obviously I need to stop it, and hopefully the ridicule I get will keep me in line. I have a huge carb/sweet tooth and need to figure out ways to handle it.
tomorrow will be better.

Also, I always hear that all the really matters is calories in vs calories out, right? My problem, I guess, is that that's all I've really cared about?

quality of calorie is equally if not more important than total number imo and in the opinion of some fairly smart people like Mat Lalonde

Re: You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it: Gizmo's log

Yes calories in calories out is right. If you feel the need to cheat a meal from time to time then you should, by all means, especially if this is a long term thing. That said, cheat meal should be a once a week thing, if that often, and certain things should be just off limits, like pure dessert food. You might be able to sate your sweet tooth by having a couple of bites of someone else's dessert or something though.

Also, more importantly, I'm seeing a LOT of respect given to calorie burning calculators in this thread. This is just my opinion but those are a piece of ****, completely unreliable and overestimated, especially for a woman. I highly doubt you burned 844 calories over your resting BMR that day. And I would be very reluctant to count steps taken at your job toward such a number. After all, you've been working since before this diet and it didn't seem to do much for your weight then. Your body has gotten very good at walking around and wiping asses for 12 hours (pardon the joke, my mom has the same job), and that activity level burns many less calories than for someone who isn't accustomed to it.

But that is exactly what I'm talking about - the small ones. Egg yolks is a small one.

That isn't an argument. Just because there is part of egg yolks that is good for you it doesn't outweigh the bad portion of it this case - calorie intake. Egg yolks have 3 times the calories than the whites. In this case, the goal is to reduce calories. You can make arguments in your line of thought all day long, but it doesn't help in her goal.

Egg whites - 20 calories. Yolks - 55 calories. It's not difficult.

Re: You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it: Gizmo's log

Bla bla egg yolks etc, it's definitely not the thing to worry about at this time. I don't understand how you can look at that day's food and read the words she wrote and conclude that egg yolks is the thing to come down on.

Giz, calories in/out is all that matters for losing weight. If you burn more than you eat, you will either lose weight or defy the laws of thermodynamics, you know the drill. Eating a good mix of macronutrients can help you retain muscle mass though, so hopefully you lose more fat instead of muscle, meaning you (presumably) look better and hopefully feel better. Weight lifting is good for similar reasons. There's a bit more to it but you've probably read the same things I have. Worrying about getting good amounts of protein is definitely worth it in my opinion (my excel spreadsheet of everything I've consumed the last month is just chicken and eggs, chicken and eggs, or so it feels like), but to say that the "quality of calories is equally if not more important than the quantity" is just bros being bros when talking about weight/fat loss. When your primary goal is something different, maybe.

I will agree that I'm not a fan of the calorie burning calculator. The reason is it adds more uncertainty/estimates to what's already a pretty imprecise science. It does depend on how you use it though; if you're like me who just like keeping track of things and don't let it influence you in any way, then coolio. My feeling is that you're taking its number more seriously than that though, based on you mentioning "net calories" earlier. I don't know if that's true or not, but I think the estimate that calculator is giving is incredibly imprecise, and basically it's just a gimmick. If it influences you (either "ugh I ate really crappy today, but hey at least my net calories aren't too bad" type thoughts, or "sweet I had a pretty good day today, I can eat 205 more calories today! Maybe I'll have another snack" type actions), then I think it's downright harmful for your progress and I would suggest throwing it out.

I don't know what to recommend for snacks at work. Hope you can figure something out that includes water/diet soda instead of a 7up at work though, you're obviously well aware of how silly it is to drink liquid calories when losing weight.

And seriously eat all the damn egg yolks you want until you're overall really happy with your diet. Or egg whites

Re: You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it: Gizmo's log

Today will be better. About to Farmer's Market it up! And I'll try to keep my calories at 1450 every day I'm not doing anything strenuous. According to that one website soulman always links (can't find the link) it said on rest days I should be getting 1400 and work out days should be somewhere around 1800. I think I'll try and do 1400/1600 and see how I feel.

I think 1400/1600 is a lot better. Here's hoping you get good results!

Try drinking a lot of water, that will prevent you from retaining so much water and you may get that whoosh of weight loss sooner.

Re: You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it: Gizmo's log

Loco, you're so cute.

Fabian - thank for the post. Idky I got super wrapped up in "zomg I'm being super active, I can eat ALL the things!" but I now realize that's exactly what I was doing. So, yes, from now on I'm going to have a specific calorie goal and stick to it regardless of activity.

I have two more days of steroids, just fyi. I dunno, probably placebo, but I've felt way more energized since I've been on them :/

Here is today. I have to work tomorrow so I'm going to bed early tonight (be in bed at 9, wake up at 5:30). I got eggs today, so hopefully I'll scramble a couple and mix with hot sauce and cheese and nom nom. I'm not a big fan of eggs, but hey... if I don't like them, then that just means less calories!

Packed a bag for tomorrow, it includes left over black beans from this evening, some cheese, greek yogurt, string cheese, a couple apples, a kiwi, and if I can remember in the morning- some frozen watermelon. I'll get a chicken breast from the cafeteria with some cuke/tomato I'm thinking. I hate the food there, though. Ugh. So, that's the plan for tomorrow and when I get home, I think I'll try to eat another salad. Easy to make, good to get the greens in, yadda yadda.

Here is today:

The jelly beans were bad, but LK bought them at the last second and then I had no will power. Part way through eating the hummus with the pita chips, I switched to carrots. I still counted the whole portion as though I ate nothing but chips, though. LK also got this chocolate covered biscuit and I ate some of that on the way home (A couple bites, but no idea how much it actually was). The tacos are 1/2 cup black beans, lettuce, 1/4 cup cheese, some hot sauce and taco shells. The burger was a culver's burger which is bad. Got it with no mayo, though. (Lettuce, pickle, onion, tomato, mustard and missing 1/2 the bun). Was really hungry on the way home from the store and I figure it was better than eating more of LK's chocolate delicious-thingy.
Oh and I had just under 3 L of water today
