Bump to avoid archiving. Decent Crossfit discussion for the inevitable future "zomg Crossfit" visitors.

Re: What are your thoughts on crossfit?
I'm roughly 7 months removed from Crossfit and the hate I now have for it is comical/disturbing.

Re: What are your thoughts on crossfit?
I've been doing Crossfit for a few months (after doing SS for a few months last year). I know it's not optimal but I mostly do it because the scheduled workouts help "force" me to go, the trainer actually knows his lift and has helped my form tremendously, the equipment is great (tons of squat racks and bumpers) and I like the community.
I also knew going into it that some of the programming was dangerous and I've managed to avoid the worst stuff. But after reading this thread through, I'm going to back off on the WODs (although I've never seen GHD situps or stuff like run 800m do 30 snatches) and focus more on the lifting (which my trainer is cool with). I've already paid for the new two months so I'll just see that through.
My box does follow the Wendler program I think, but the way they stagger the lifts just don't work. I go on MWS and miss all the stuff on TThF. So I've been doing more SS-type stuff anyway.
But yeah, I'm realizing it's dumb to pay this much when I'm mostly using it for the equipment and the feedback on lifts. The workouts are way more fun, though, and I like the additional cardio aspect as compared to just doing straight SS.

If you are going to do anything with crossfit in the name its this. Fundamental lifts, linear progressions(Rip helped the creator), and metcons that are very hard and applicable to football/power.
There are tons of better programs for specific goals but as far as CF goes this is the end all be all.

Yeah I agree that between this and the main site's programming, this is the clear winner. There is still some stuff that is leaving me scratching my head though- clearly it is not perfect.
There are some affiliates with better strength oriented programming. Also with only a moderate amount of experience most individuals could write something specifically for themselves that would do a better job addressing weaknesses and drive faster progress.
I mean 5/3/1 + metcon 4 days a week is pretty easy to program, easy to tailor to weaknesses, and will probably get you strong in the 4 main lifts faster than crossfit football (though maybe not in oly movements).

so do 5/3/1 with Oly Lifts/weight pullups and dips/other stuff like that as assistance, and then metcons.

Re: What are your thoughts on crossfit?
Is John Welbourne in charge of crossfit football still? I worked out at his gym for a couple months a couple years ago, not with him but he was there most days. He is SUPER into Paleo eating, otherwise I do not think he is too into drinking the crossfit kool-aid. He was a professional football player, along with being crossfit and SS certified, so he definitely knows his stuff and I would be shocked if this program wasn't legit.
Also, from what I remember I am pretty sure he thinks the olympic lifts are the most important part of the routine (the explosive power >> powerlifting strength for football ideology), so that is why they are such a focus.

Likes to use (his term) movements with violent hip extension:
Oly lifts (not snatches in metcons, unless db or kb snatches), russian kb swings, heavy medball slams (40#), sledgehammer tire strikes, prowler work.
He does believe strongly in the slow lifts and says probably the most important thing a newb/amatuer should work on is squatting, 2x/week. Slow lifts mostly found in the daily strength WOD/work.
