Yeah I'll post some more below. Sorry about the weird dots--there was some kind of smudge in the aperture that still shows up now and then. Getting a new camera is on my list of toys to buy once I start my new job.

This is farther up the trail at Ecola State Park--it's definitely one of the coolest spots on the Oregon coast.

This is little south of there at Oswald West State Park just north of the town of Manzanita--great pizza place there right on the beach!

Cape Lookout, just southwest of the town of Tillamook, famous for its dairy products.

Long sandbar that separate Tillamook Bay from the Pacific Ocean.

Big collection of various hiking pictures in my previous log as well.

This weekend I'm going to Monterey with my girlfriend and her family, so I'll try to get some good shots of the coast if conditions allow. I'd love to hit one of the seacoast trails, but I'm probably going to be doing the driving, so it depends what everyone else is interested in.

Minor update for today: 12 chin-ups, various resistance exercises on the machine in the workout room (it's OK, but not great), 30 minutes on the elliptical (moderate to high resistance). Nice low-impact cardio workout that won't aggravate my shins. I was going to just rest today, but doing something I think was helpful.

And now your daily derail/temptation/food pr0n:

Wednesday was a total rest day. I found out that I didn't get a job (or even an interview) that I'd really been hoping for, which sent me into a bit of a depression for the rest of the day.

Today I tried to pick myself up and get back on track.

Push-up set goals (90 sec. intervals): 25, 29, 25, 25, 36+
Actual push-up sets: 25, 29, 23, 15, 20

Week 4 is no joke. I will probably stay at this level until I make some more progress. I find it a bit dubious that anyone could actually complete the program and make a 100-push-up set after just six weeks. But maybe I'm just weak.

Cardio session: 1.57 miles on elliptical (hill-climber/weight loss interval), 1.51 miles on treadmill (9:50 pace). So I got the 5K done in distance, just not all in running. Ankles/shins a bit sore, but nothing compared to last week.

Random Musings
Excedrin is magic. The little boost of caffeine to go along with the NSAID does wonders for my clearly crappy body. Also had coffee (well, OK, an iced mocha) this morning, which was amazing. I know they're awful for you, 300+ calories concoctions of sugar and fat, but a lot of times that's most of my calorie consumption for the morning (which probably also isn't that healthy, but sue me). I bought heaps of chicken from Costco today so I can inject some solid protein into my diet and filter out some of the crap as well. Been doing OK on the sugar front, aside from the Ron Burgundy ice cream in the previous post.

Can I mention again how awesome caffeine is? I'll tell you how awesome:

Did another gym session today since I will be out of town in Fresno and Monterey this weekend.

Chin-ups (12)
Wide-grip pull-ups (10)
3x10 cable curls
3x10 cable pull-downs

Cardio: 3.13 miles (5K) on elliptical interval/hill-climber in 33 minutes. Nice moderate pace and resistance. Hopefully will bring back some nice pictures of the California coast on Sunday, but depends on what my girlfriend's family wants to do.

Yo TP- great pics, tnx for sharing

Shinsplints suck... when I got them I made sure to stretch before every exercise session, was included calf raises and rolling my ankles in cicrcles, especially trying to point your toes up or down while sitting down.

Also, make sure you have good running shoes, that was my mistake

Yeah I hear ya... my running shoe selection is somewhat limited because I have VERY wide feet and high arches. I usually go with a New Balance series with athletic insoles. Seems to help. Just have to manage the shins now and then. Last week was bad. This week, fortunately not to much. Anti-inflammatories and foam rolling also do wonders.

Well, not as much hiking or as many pictures of the coast as I would have liked, but here are a few I snapped this weekend of Monterey Bay:

And some fishies:

Got back in the gym today after 12 hours of driving in the last 3 days.

Tricep pulldowns: 10 x 45, 10 x 50, 10 x 55
Cable crossover rows: 10 x 55, 10 x 60, 8 x 70
Cable curls: 10 x 30, 10 x 35, 10 x 40

Short treadmill session with some incline walking and speed work. First sub-9 mile of this year! Ran most of it at 6.5 mph (9:13 pace), and then ramped it up at the end to come in just under 9. Middle-term goal: run 1.5 miles in 12 min (8:00 pace). That will actually be tough for me. A 5K at 9:00 pace would amazing, but not sure how long that will take me. File under slightly longer term. Hell, getting back to a sub-30 5K or running 5K's at all would be an accomplishment. Left knee is mad at me from driving. Aleve time.

Tomorrow: push-ups and lasertag practice. Time to do work.

April 14 Lasertag
Absolutely huge night with 24 people, bigger than we have had in almost two years. I guess it has to do with Spring Break. The nice thing about this number is we got to split into advanced and beginner flights, so people could play closer to their skill level. Overall a good night for me, though one of the games was not recorded for stats due to human error. Oh well. I've rocketed myself back to the top of both the Ammo and Medic leader boards for the site, but I feel like I still need work on my attacking game as a Scout. 1 Medic hit per game just isn't going to cut it if I'm going to be effective in the field.

Week 4, Day 2 Sets (90 sec. intervals... probably took closer to 105)
Push-Up Goals: 25, 29, 25, 25, 36+
Push-Up Sets: 25, 29, 25, 22, 22

Improvement from last week at least, but those last sets are killer! I have no idea how people get such high numbers on set 5.

Pull-Ups: 11, 10, 10
Cable Curls: 10x35, 10x40, 10x45
Cable Cross-Over Rows: 10x60, 10x70, 10x80

Cardio Session
I wasn't planning to run tonight, but the ellipticals were occupied, so I figured what the hell. Got a bit ambitious and I'm happy with myself.
Warm-up was 0.25 miles at 3.5 mph and 5% grade
Ran 2 miles at 9:40 pace and then finished off another 0.15 miles at 8:00 pace... because my play list was on "Gonna Fly Now." And how can you not sprint the last minute when you're listening to this?

Shins are definitely a little sore from the beating of the last little bit, but I'm stretching, foam-rolling, and taking my NSAIDs. Definitely happy with my run tonight and with my performance overall this week. Gotta keep it up and stay focused!

Did some light cardio tonight (elliptical and incline treadmill walking) after doing a heavy day yesterday. Also got some bad news; my uncle had a stroke and died this evening. I can't say I was particularly close to him, but I feel really bad for my dad, my grandma, and my cousins--they have to bury a brother, a son, and father. Been a sucky year having to bury too many people already. I have never really felt like I handle death appropriately, like I'm not sad enough or something, but I guess you can't help how you feel. And as awful as it is, I guess we can all think of much worse ways to go than having a stroke and losing consciousness almost instantly. Probably a morbid as **** thing to say, but I don't know what else to say about **** like this.

So, sorry for no hiking photos this weekend, but if you read two posts back, you can guess why. Headed up to help the family on Saturday, which I think was good for everyone. My uncle will be missed, but it seems like everyone is coping as best they can. That **** makes you think though... aneurysms (which is what happened, not a stroke as I originally had heard) are freaky things, and it's a good idea to remember to treasure your time with your older relatives. You never know when it could come to an end. I know I plan on giving my dad a big hug every time I see him now. RIP Uncle Mark, we'll miss you buddy.

Anyway, not to gloss over that, but that's what's happening in my life. Back to the training stuff I guess. Good for working out the feels.

Did a push-up test today and got 45 banged out. Week 5 regimen is still going to kick my ass though, so maybe I will start in column 2 and see how I do before moving up.''

Also did 2x25 air squats, which I felt in my hamstrings... so clearly more of these need to be on the agenda so I can get good and low at lasertag. Maybe need to throw some duck-walking in the training program.

Cable Pulldowns: 10x50, 10x55, 8x60
Cable Curls: 10 x 40, 10x45, 8x50
Cable Crossover Rows: 10x60, 10x70, 10x80

Cardio: Did some "speed" (relative term) today. Ran a mile at 8:57 pace (7.0 mph) without actually too much difficulty after a short 0.25 mile warm-up. I then managed to finish another 0.35 miles at 8:00 pace (7.5 mph). Pretty happy with this. I will work on distance later this week and see if I can get a complete 2.5 mile run at lower speed in, or maybe even a full sub-30 5K if I am feeling up to it.

Tomorrow, however, is lasertag practice, and I intend to be even better than last week. Goal is 5+ medic hits every game I play an attacking class.

April 21 Lasertag
Had an awkward number of 16 last night, which makes it tough to run a 3-team rotation, but we managed. Teams have been a little lopsided as of late, but we've been making due and got a couple new players involved last night. For my part, I accomplished my immediate goals for the evening and finally got some good attacking games in, though I did lose 2 of the games where I played Heavy or Commander. 5-2 record overall for the night with a number of very strong Ammo and Medic games, which is what I'm primarily shooting for. We're up to 4 confirmed for our Brisbane team, which is great progress, and our 5th should be booking his flight any time now. Just have to nail down that Medic slot and we should be in decent shape for the tournament.

Week 5 Day 2 Column 2 (45 sec. intervals)
Push-Up Goals:18, 18, 20, 20, 14, 14, 16, 40+
Push-Up Sets: 18, 18, 20, 20, 14, 14, 16, 20

Pull-Ups: 3x11 (alternating grips)

Cardio
A bit derailed today for two reasons. (1) The breaker in the workout room blew. Apparently the ****ty thing can't even handle four cardio machines being on at once. Then I realized I was being dumb and could just run outside because it's nice out. (2) Shin splints hit BAD. I turned back after maybe a third of a mile, but finished the run on the side streets home. I was and am in terrible pain following that. Apparently I need two days recovery after lasertag, because that really works the shins. That and I probably should have programmed my eating a little better today. Probably going to take a light walk to stretch and then do some foam rolling. Taking some NSAIDs now. **** I hate shin splints. We'll see how I feel tomorrow before I decide if I can tackle a longer run.

Today's adventures in trying not to have my body fall apart...

Air Squats: 25
Cable Curls: 10x40, 10x45, 8x50
Cable Crossover Rows: 10x60, 10x70, 10x80

Cardio
So, with some stretching and warm-up today, I was able to log 2 miles at a sub-10 pace. However, this was less than the 2.5-3 miles I was hoping for. I will take small gains where I can get them though, I guess. I think I will be taking tomorrow and Saturday off of running, but I will still get some light cardio in where possible.

Fell behind on my push-up sets because we're dog-sitting this weekend but did get a few sets (2+ min. intervals) this morning: 25, 30, 33

Also got a few pics from the "hike" today, really more of a long dog walk near the river, but the clouds did provide for some decent shots.

Funny story on the last one... I set down my water bottle to take this and didn't realize I'd done so until a half-mile later. So I got my jog in for the day retrieving it. Shins still hurt afterward. Bugger.

Rant of the day: can I just say how much I hate cigarettes? My downstairs neighbors smoke like ****ing chimneys and it somehow always seems to work its way into my apartment regardless of what I do. It is annoying as ****. If you want to give yourself cancer, the least you could do is not make me have to smell the tar.

Back to training stuff...

Push-Ups: 4 x 35
Pull-Ups: 4 x 11
Air Squats: 3 x 25
Upright cable rows: 10 x 45, 10 x 50, 10 x 60
Cable Curls: 10 x 45, 9 x 50, 6 x 55
Cable Cross-Over rows: 10 x 60, 10 x 70, 10 x 80

Cardio
0.25 mile walk warm-up
1.50 miles at 7.0 mph pace... not bad overall. I will see if I can work up from this pace, but...

Shins massively hurt right now. Not as bad as when I first stopped the treadmill, but still fairly significant pain. It almost feels like the shin splints are getting worse. Obviously I'll still be practicing for lasertag tomorrow (will probably just take Excedrin beforehand), but I'm getting concerned. I might need to just take a week off running to see if things improve. But maybe I need more stretching? New shoes? Very frustrating when I'm trying to give something I don't particularly like (running) an honest go and my body seems to want to nix the idea.

Yesterday's push-up goals were met, but I totally "cheated" on the last set when I got caught up on the phone and had a good 10+ min of rest before the last set. But who cares? I'm not really aiming to do 100 consecutive push-ups. 50 will do. The maintenance of pecs/triceps/ab tightness is plenty.

Push-Up Sets (60 sec.): 28, 35, 25, 22, 40
Pull-Ups: 11 (just 'cuz)

April 28 Lasertag
Horrible night. Not necessarily for me--I played OK, not the best ever. But the night was ruined by someone's bad attitude. One of our buddies came in from out of town and brought his insufferably bitchy wife with him. She played one game and quit, forcing him to "console" her the rest of the night, and she constantly pulls this ****. We like the guy, but he has to stay married to her for 3 years in order to get his citizenship. Tough spot, because everyone (him included) knows he needs to drop her. So yeah, everything was basically screwed from the get-go. But the good news is I have my visa all set for Australia. I think we're under the 12 week mark... holy crap!

OK time to work out my bolding formats for consistency...

Resistance/Calisthenics Training
Push-Ups: 3 x 35, 1 x 40
Pull-Ups: 12, 11 (wide); 12, 11 (neutral)
Air Squats: 4 x 25
Cable Curls: 10 x 45, 10 x 50, 8 x 55
Cable Cross-over Rows: 10 x 60, 10 x 70, 10 x 80

Cardio Training
30 min. Elliptical hill-climber
2 mi. walk, casual pace

Very minimal knee and shin pain. I think I will just keep it light and try to recover this week. Also likely need to look into new shoes before too long. Insoles help, but they only go so far.

Yesterday's Cardio
30 min. Elliptical cross-trainer

Today's Resistance Training
Push-Ups: 3 x 36
Air Squats: 3 x 25
Pull-Ups: 12, 5, 5

So... yeah, things got thrown off today. For some reason I thought it would be cool to go play Poker for a few hours (already a bad idea, as I'm decidedly awful now) and then try to work out ion a hot apartment after consuming only an iced mocha and a small sandwich today. Absolutely exhausted now, though I've tried to rehydrate and replenish my protein stores by munching on El Pollo Loco.

Tomorrow it's off to San Francisco for a comedy show in the evening, hopefully plenty of walking. I really need to start taking my training regimen more seriously, because days like today will not cut it. At least I did manage to get some new shoes, which will hopefully help my shins/knees.

Minor updates: I have been very sick with the flu since Sunday. I've managed a few workout sets here and there, and managed to DayQuil myself through lasertag practice on Monday (did decently, but not my best night). Today, however, I ache all over and I'm all sweaty. Not good. Hopefully will be better by tomorrow, as I'm supposed to go in to the lasertag place to help repair some gear. I still haven't heard back on jobs, and I could use a few extra bucks between now and summer, so why not?

Back on track (but still recovering from illness)

Managed a small session yesterday consisting of the following:
25 push-ups
25 air squats
Cable cross-over rows: 10 x 60, 12 x 70, 10 x 80
Cable curls: 10 x 45, 10 x 50, 8 x 55
Ran 1.10 miles at 7 mph pace

Hoping to squeeze in some push-ups, pull-ups, and cardio today after work, and then maybe a hike this weekend if schedule/weather allows.

May 9

Resistance/Calisthenics
Push-Ups: 35, 35, 40
Pull/Chin-Ups: 12, 12, 12
Air Squats: 3 x 25

Cardio
2 mile walk in the evening
1.5 mile treadmill run, 7.1 mph

Overhaul feeling good on the cardio, not ready to collapse or anything, just kinda easing back into it. Minor knee/shin pain, but the new shoes REALLY help alleviate the impacts. I will probably have to look at a new pair of insoles as well if I'm going to step up the training regimen, if only to give my current insoles a day off now and then to recover their shape. I'm determined to use my new shoes only for lasertag and running until Brisbane to help keep them keep their "bounce" and integrity.

Headed to Salt Lake City for annual AP grading next month... using the treadmills that week with the old shoes is going to be interesting... but in 7-8 days, I probably only need about 3 runs, so I should be OK, especially with 2+ miles of walking each day to/from the convention center. With any luck, should have some hiking pics tomorrow, but depends a bit on the weather.
