Just did 30 minutes of stretching.
Really need to get my legs and especially my hips more flexible.
Starting next week a weekly go will be minimum 6 stretching sessions.

nogi today.

Rolled with a weird new guy today. He instantly tapped out as soon as I got something like side control, mount, rubber guard, etc. Didn't even have time to go for a sub before he was tapping.

Stretched a bunch today too

total bjj classes 25/150

Goals for next week.

[ ] stretch a ton
[ ] 4 bjj classes
[ ] 2-3 MT or mma cllasses if elbow allows it

Just went to 1.5 hours of stand up fighting which today was karate followed by 1.5 hour mma which today was just bjj so gonna count that as a bjj class.

Drilled the basic subs from guard and did some rolling, the mma guys were pretty much clueless and I felt like a purple belt.

For this week:
2/4 bjj classes
1/2 striking classes

overall
26/150 bjj classes.

Thinking of looking for a date to compete, maybe some time during spring next year. If I do then I will probably be able to add another day of bjj training per week (Y)

For this week:
3/4 bjj classes
1/2 striking classes

overall
27/150 bjj classes.

Alright, gonna start tracking my flexibility training too.

My long term goals are:
- Easily get into lotus position
- Front splits, both sides
- side split

Here's the first goals regarding reps
- 2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)
^ Expecting this to take around 3 months

- 1000 minutes spent at full range/close to full range for all the splits combined
^ Expecting this to take around 6 months

Hey man, just found this thread and it's cool to follow along.

I've been training for about a year and a half. Still a while belt. Still smashed every class, but definitely show improvement. My schedule forces me to train at noon with a bunch of absolute savages. Can rarely get an inch on anyone. They tell me that I would crush the beginners class, but I feel like I get better rolling with these guys. It's like having 5 teachers in one class.

BJJ has essentially saved my life. For more info on that check out the "Ask Layzie About Heroin/Prison" thread in OOT.

Hey! Happy to hear bjj has helped you.
We don't really separate beginners and advanced students in our place. I like the mix between rolling with advanced guys, guys I can smash and guys I'm evenly matched with.

Stay clean and keep BJJing!

Thanks man. We have a beginners class twice a week, and one advanced class. All others are for all levels.

I'm in the US, and am not familiar with the European BJJ scene. Where do you train?

I wish I wrestled or something when I was younger. I came in to this with my only athletic experience being baseball, and it took a good 6 months to just understand the movements, and get my core strong enough. Now I'm more focused, and feel like I get better every time I train.

Ah okay sounds good!
I train at 2 places, in my town and in the town next to mine.
I live in a small town in sweden so I think it differs a bit from usa. Like our 2 coaches are brown belts, we dont have any black belts in our towns yet (though one of the browns will most likely get his black fairly soon) just 1-2 times per year we have a camp and a high level black belt comes to visit and from what I hear this is when potential promotions happen (we dont do stripes )

It's also super cheap to train.
I pay about 85 bucks for 6 months and get to train muay thai, mma and bjj for that price. The club is non profit.

It differs a bit if you live in Stockholm. There are more clubs and some clubs where you can train bjj twice a day, i'd say in stockholm it's a bit more like in usa.

I did train judo from the age of 9-14 and also did recreational acrobatics (backyard flips) and breakdancing from like 10-17.
Even though it was a long time since I did any of this I feel like it's had some carry over, really wish i kept doing judo longer (and started this earlier)

Nogi today,
Toooons of rolling and a pretty cool transition from side mount to triangle

Pumped to start working towards my flexibility goals tomorrow,
Wanna get those front splits within 3 months and get somewhat close (5-10cm at least) to side splits in 6 months. Honestly if I ever get that close to side splits it will be the biggest accomplishment ever because my groin feels crazy stiff, starts hurting at 2x shoulder width when not warmed up.

For this week:
4/4 bjj classes
1/2 striking classes

overall
28/150 bjj classes.

Awesome dude. I'm not on 2p2 as much as I used to be, but i'll be checking in on your progress.

Do you have any tips for flexibility work? I'm a small thin guy, and am somewhat flexible, but I would benefit greatly from a few cm, since I'm generally on bottom playing guard.

Well I wouldn't say I'm an expert since I've never really tried to become flexible before From what I've read so far it seems like a mix of dynamic, static relaxed and static weighted or isometric stretches is the best.
And obv to make enough time for it and stay consistent.

Speaking of which, prob stretched for 90+ minutes today

Started this morning with dynamic stretching (front lifts and side lifts)

Then bjj class

And to end the day a long session of relaxed stretches. Did front split with left leg forward and side split, legs are toast now. Took some before pics but haven't stretched front split with right leg forward yet so will wait with uploading.

The bjj class was good, more work from back, drilled a cool transition to armbar if RNC wasn't working.
Also had a fun roll with a guy. I caught him in a triangle after like 10 seconds, then did it again with pretty much same setup, then again... then got an opening for it the 4th time but opted not to go for it because putting him in a triangle 4 times in a row during a single roll felt ridic.
Managed to instead get him with an ezekiel choke aka rape choke.

overall
29/150 bjj classes.
46/2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)
15/1000 minutes spent at full range/close to full range for all the splits combined

No training yday due to real life schedules.

Today:
Dynamic stretching in the morning
muay thai and static relaxed stretches in the evening

I am way more flexible at front split with right leg forward than left leg forward.

At muay thai today for whatever reason I got placed with the advanced group (people with 6 months or more I think)
Was fun, did a lot of mitts work and some very light sparring.
I suck at striking.

overall
29/150 bjj classes.
92/2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)
33/1000 minutes spent at full range/close to full range for all the splits combined

BEFORE PIX

So this is where I'm at first week of the "challenge"

Right front split

Left front split

Side split

So, slightly more flexible right leg forward compared to left leg forward. Side splits are by far my biggest weakness.

Would guesstimate the front splits to be 20cm off the ground and side split to be 40cm off the ground. After the 12 weeks I'd like to have/almost have my front splits and be something like 20cm off the ground with my side split

No stretching today.

Bunch of new guys at the bjj today, good ego boost rolling with them.

overall
30/150 bjj classes. 20% there
92/2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)
33/1000 minutes spent at full range/close to full range for all the splits combined

Did dynamic stretching this morning and just finished weighted stretches

Basically did this for right leg front split and side split:
some warm up stretches
4 sets of 1 minute relaxed stretches
5 sets of 10-20 seconds weighted stretches

Only used body weight, will add a few kg in a couple weeks

Will miss mma/thai tomorrow because I'm taking a uni test. It's a test you an do twice a year, if you get a good score you increase your chances of getting into uni. I've somehow managed to do absolutely nothing to prepare for it so I'm pretty much screwed imo.
2.0 is max score, I would guesstimate that if I score 1.0 or higher it will be better than my old grades for getting into uni

overall
30/150 bjj classes.
138/2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)
59/1000 minutes spent at full range/close to full range for all the splits combined

edit: oh and I think I'm closer to 33cm off the ground for side split and 15cm off the ground for right leg front split

Dynamic stretching again this morning while watching rick and morty for the 4th time.

Then nogi, fun class with lots of rolling and 1 point fights that started standing towards the end which was much fun. Did a judo throw I was pleased with.

Then weighted splits training

overall
31/150 bjj classes.
230/2000 sidelifts and front lifts per leg (total of 8000 lifts)

My right wrist has been hurting since saturday #alwaysinjured

It's pretty weird, sometimes I can kinda support myself on it and sometimes it hurts like crazy when I put my hand down. Mostly if I haven't used it for a while and then try to support myself on my right hand or I bend my wrist backwards it hurts like hell and after that it gets better for a while.
Weird thing is I don't know what caused this. Prob will disappear in a week or so.

Elbow is pretty good, but not 100%, still wouldn't feels comfortable lifting heavy on it

Hey man,

I had a fun class yesterday. There's a couple blue belts that are basically on the same schedule as me, so I see them 4 times a week. Both of them were complimenting me on the annoyance of my flexibility and guard retention. Really gave me a wave of confidence, and something to embrace.

I'm a white belt, and I know this isn't the time to "develop my game", but it's really encouraging to know I'm getting better.

I'm following your progress, man. I've been having a sore wrist myself, but it's mainly because my instructor just got back from Brazil, and has brought back a couple of cool wrist lock techniques.
