FWIW the set-up is a bit closer than a traditional sumo, per AJ's tips. This so I can make sure to get a bit more lower back into the exercise, since I'm doing the sumo style because of my inability to do a standard DL.
yes i know, it's a modified sumo stance. not many pull it off well apparantly but it can work (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dpRChwpmaM)

pushing the hips through just means that you have to fire the glutes and get your hip to the bar as much as possible, starting at the knees.

miles, you're right...a bit OCD. Thanks for confirming the squat looks ok though, I've been trying to fix it for so long now I sort of lost confidence in it.

axel, aha. Thanks for the cue. AJ explained it another way: just focus on dragging the bar BACK and not up - should sort it out as well. That Coan clip is awesome.

Hooray for video! These guys know their stuff, and even when I don't have anything to contribute (though I thought your sumo DL looked good) I am learning lots.

Hooray for video!

Hooray for video!
AJ gave me some additional tips:
  • Little more upright torso (to ensure chest up and tight upper back)
  • Drag back back back until hammies scream for mercy
  • Flat-soled shoes (having the heels drilled down to 1/2" prolly)
  • Ensure vertical arms (for maximal force efficiency ldo)
  • SS cues for set-up don't really apply as much to sumo DLs

re: Soulman's Vanity Log

squats look OK except for the herky jerk nonsense at the beginning. They might be slightly shallow but it's close.

definitely not shallow, look at his reflection in the background. this angle is very deceptive for judging depth. i experienced it first hand in my log.

thanks miles, I couldn't quite get how I was shallow, although the vid looks like that at first glance. That angle really is very deceptive for depth perception.

Squat
3x5x95 kg (210 lbs)

Hard, but got em.

Press
1x5x50
2x4x51 (112 lbs)

Normally, I would consider this a stall but...I haven't done the program properly for like 2-3 weeks due to life stuff. So I'll just repeat 51 again next time. I really shouldn't have trained today either, but whatev no way I'm gonna allow regression now. Prolly last workout of the week though :/

Rack pulls
3x10xBW

Back Extensions
1x10x22.5 kg
1x10x25 kg (55 lbs)
1x8x25 kg

Felt light-weight on set 1, so bumped it up to 25 kgs on 2nd. Probably didn't rest long enough before doing set 3. The plate is becoming a tad bulky.

Damn, 10 days since last workout...since then, I've moved into a new apartment and finished an exam and not gone to bed before 2 am a single day and getting up at 8 am...in addition to a full-time job. It's been rough.

Squat
1x5x90
1x3x92.5, failboat
1x5x90

Yeah well, moving up to 95 next time.

Bench
3x5x60

Reset since I moved down last time. I'm wondering if my abnormally small hands can be a weakness for the bench. They're seriously tiny and an exact replica of my mom's, who is 5" shorter than me, FML.

Sumo Deadlift
1x3x100, fail
1x2x100

Wtf. Well looking back it's been 14 days since I last deadlifted, which explains the fail I guess.

Finished with all the exam crap now, so will be getting back to normal SS schedule. Christmas break? I laugh at you. Well I'll be missing one day due to gym being closed for christmas eve/boxing day (or w/e you guys call it), but other than that, full tilt ahead.

re: Soulman's Vanity Log

My programming has sort of sucked since mid-november or so due to life factors (50% studies+100% work+moving).

The squats today I did 90 kgs first (wasn't sure what to do with 10 days since last workout) then moved up to 92.5 since 90 felt light-weight. 92.5 was retarded hard for some reason.

I'll stick to the program after new year's when I don't have life factors interfering.
