I see it the other way. If he trains his squat properly he can make some major, major gains. My work sets are close to 155kg and I can definitely do a single >155kg, and I started training as a total newb ~9mo ago. If he's willing to work hard and gain some weight, I think he gets there. Whereas adding that much weight to a bench is a much harder proposition, especially for a tall guy with long arms.
Yeah, but I'm going to be lifting a lot more than 155 in 11 months time. I'm still adding 2.5kg a workout. Also, that assumes he's going to train properly, and he's not.

Cross-posted the vid in the beginner question thread. I replied to this there.

Update No 2

Just finished last workout for Feb - playing rugby on Saturday. First time in 18 months. Hoping my new uber-strength cancels out my lack of cardio.

Me

Squat: 177.5kg (391 pounds)
Bench: 92.5kg (204 pounds)
Press: 72.5kg (160 pounds)
Deadlift: 190kg (364 pounds)

Also, started Power Cleans: 75kg (165 pounds)

(All Starting Strength work-sets)

Weight: 115kg (253 pounds)

Flatmate

Bench: 120kg (265 pounds)
Squat: 80kg (154 pounds)

Flatmate hasn't really been improving on either. Think my "Shock and Awe" tactics on the squat have cowed him into submission, as he knows there's absolutely no way he'll be squatting even 180kg by the end of this year (or next probably)

My progress is good, had a few missed reps, but no stalls/re-sets yet. Was fairly sick in the middle of the month, and my sleep was a bit messed up, think I'm getting back on track now.

To finish with

67.5kg asian midget (Thremp?) Deadlifts 190kg

Woman (allegedly) benchpresses 500 pounds.

I read that as 67.5kg deadlift. Was like "who cares, even from an Asian Midget".

The key to that huge bench is to get titties so big that the bar can't go down any more than an inch.

In other flatmate broski news. I've just discovered that he is now getting 3000 calories a day from some weight gainer shake he's got...

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

to do this you wont be able to cut for the summer

you have to train like a powerlifter and eats loads of calories so that you get fat/strong and get big titties so that the bar has to travel less.

and learn how to do the mega arch powerlifter bench press style so that you only have to lift the bar like 6 inches total

if you go to a powerlifting gym the guys will tell you where to get gear so do a few cycles of that

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

Played rugby yesterday. My huge increase in strength was really noticeable. Much much faster from a standing start, much stronger in the scrum and upper body felt much stronger in rucks and tackles.

My cardio was beyond horrible though. Think I might move to

Monday - SS (Squat, Bench, DL)
Tuesday - Fitness/Metcon
Thursday - SS (Squat, Press, PC)
Saturday - Rugby

Although planning on playing rugby only once every two weeks, so will do a normal 3 day SS in off weeks.

Any suggestions for good fitness workouts?

Want something
- Good cardio/heart etc
- No too legs focused, as they get hammered by Squats and rugby
- Can be done in a gym with barbells etc, running machine, but no rower
- Low impact (have a dodgy foot I'm trying to rest)

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

Playing rugby again tomorrow. Its an "old boys match" against my old college. Just found out that the guy I used to play prop with is back in oxford doing his phd, so I'll be going head to head against him in the scrum. Should be epic. He always used to be better than me, but I'm looking forward to my seeing how he copes with my new 400 pound squatting self.

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

Went uncontested in the scrum because the oppo couldnt find a full front row

I did however get to rampage over a bunch of 20 year olds. I love being really strong. Doing SS properly with the food, the sleep and scrapping cardio is one of the best things I've ever done. So much fun crushing people. Went on half a dozen 30 meter rampages with 5 people hanging off me.

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

Your bench is going to plateau at some point, which is probably what happened to your "flatmate." I'm not sure what your routine is but you'll probably need to switch it up at some point in order to win the bet.

EDIT: ok just saw youre doing SS, prolly should have read the thread

Hmm... maybe. Dont set much store by those 1rm calculators. I haven't really done and high intensity stuff so dont think my 1rm is much higher than my 3*5rm.

Think he manages a set of 2-3 by himself then a few more "its all you bro" reps.

Re: Prop Bet: Bench & Squat - Who has the best of it?

Squatted 185kg for sets last night. Very sore. Power cleans up to 82.5kg. I love these very much right now. They just gas me so bad.

Playing rugby again tomorrow. First time I'm likely to be up against a decent opposition prop. I'm very much looking forward to testing myself out. I've a feeling that I'm going to absolutely destroy them.

Need to try and fit in some cardio work more, its really holding me back, but dont want to slow the SS gains. Want to have cake, want to eat cake.

Going skiing in a week for a week. Will try and get some cardio-ish work-outs on top of the skiing while I'm there, assuming I cant find a decent gym. Likely to be drinking to much to get much out of it, so may just treat it as a recovery week to get rid of some built up fatigue!

Bench up to 97.5kg fwiw.
