Any advice for someone with bad knees? Any advice for someone with bad knees?

Hey guys,

So for as long as I can remember I've always had "old man" knees where I can hear them pop and crack when I squat down (bodyweight) and even when I was a bit younger my knees would often be sore etc.. I'm 28 years old fwiw. It might be genetic because my dad is 60 and he has bad knees and now has difficulty going up stairs.

Anyways, I squat, leg press and deadlift and I feel it in my knees afterwards and with leg press, I feel it during the exercise.

1.) Is it bad form?
2.) Is it pretty normal to feel it in the knees with those exercises?
3.) Do things like knee sleeves, glucosamine supplements, stretching etc. help?

Any advice?

Crepitus is not a problem unless it is accompanied by pain. Often times with repeated joint movement it ends up going away anyway.

No, its not normal to "feel it" in the knees. It means one of the ACL, PCL or LCL or other soft tissue is weakened/degraded.

I can't speak to whether sleeves or supps would help. Honestly I'd go to the doctor and thoroughly explain when you feel it and where.

IMO you should just do the movements with correct form and make progress unless there is actual pain before you start thinking about solutions to a problem that may not even exist. Pain is a pretty clear litmus test because it cuts through the bull****; if you're not sure if it's pain you're feeling then you're not feeling pain. It may merely be discomfort or soreness, which is normal and should usually be trained through.

I was in a very similar situation to you. Forums are nice and we can give advice and please find a (good) sports PT. You're 28 years old, do not take any risks of long term damage. A PT should give you some combination of:

- manual therapy
- stability work
- mobility work
- quad and glute strengthening

I have the same issue. Have had it since my teens. It's early onset arthritis of the knee joints for me. Through a scan, I believe it was an x-ray, is how they saw it. Unfortunately not much can be done for genetically bad joints. You'll want to limit wear and tear on them, so I would stop doing the leg press, especially since you feel pain while doing it which can't be good. It's a similar leg movement as the squat anyway.

My knees are shot.
Box squatting is your friend. Even better is a belt squat box squat to not load your spine. The only reason this is not the most popular movement is because most gyms don't have a belt squat or pit shark.
20-30 reps on leg press works for me too. My days of trying to throw all the 45s in the gym on the leg press for 3 are over.

Why wouldn't OP want to load his spine?

My advice is to take advice from doctors & specialists and not randos on the interwebs

See a specialist, get an MRI, take their advice

If you are going to take glucosamine make sure it has chrondroitin as well.
