This thread is for people to discuss their training and competing in any of the various stand-up/striking fighting styles. If you train in boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, tkd, karate or any other relevant martial art then post in here about your training.

I've been training at my local MMA club for about a year now, and although about half of my training is no-gi grappling, I much prefer the stand-up aspect of fighting. My enthusiasm far outweighs my actual ability, but I'm not terrible and am committed to constantly improving. I just boxed for about six months, but have recently started doing a bit more kickboxing. When sparring MMA, I'm definitely a sprawl-and-brawl kinda guy, usually relying on my boxing, but I'm slowly starting to work out how to incorporate kicks into my attack without leaving myself open to an easy take-down. Being the smallest guy in my club usually (5'4, 139lb) I tend to use a fast in-and-out style, using as much movement and footwork as possible and relying on my speed and agility.

Looking forward to hearing about what others have to contribute to this thread, and hopefully Caught Clean will be along soon with the grappling thread to make sure every aspect of fighting gets covered in this forum.

Baji Quan

-"I do not know what it's like to hit a man twice."
Li Shuwen

Trying to learn some moves from Baji, starting with the one which appear at the game and saw in a competition form book I scraped from the internetz (it's on Chinese though...), it fits very well after I defend from the kicks with my chin. This move start about 2:40 at the third link.

From the tests I am more scared that I end up putting someone in the hospital than it not working...

Sorry, kept meaning to post in here. Need to give this thing a bump. Did a little boxing today, haven't in so long. My main schedule is 3 days of BJJ a week, 1 boxing, and 1 open mat whateves. I try to lift twice a week as well. My friend filmed me hitting the pads a bit, I might upload it here in a bit. I am much more of a novice at striking then I am at grappling (still quite new at that to) so be gentle haha.

Lately I've been doing straight boxing, after training muay thai/bjj for a while. Now that im older (25), and not actually fighting anyone anymore, I do it more for the cardio than anything. I do 3 hours a week of boxing workout (combos with calisthenics) and run/lift two days a week. The results are awesome, lost 3 inches on my waist and actually went up a suit size in two months.

On another note, after using 14s for years, I finally switched to 16s, and I felt a difference immediately. Recommend it for everyone.

I think you overextend too much and let your hands drop way too much. You don't look awful by any means. Hook is too wide tho and you wind up too hard on punches, should relax a lot more and not be so tense. It looks like your traps/shoulders are going to be super sore after this workout. That's something I've had lots of trouble with. Also, sit down more on punches. I'm super rusty and not great at striking either. I'll post a vid of me hitting my bag sometime for you to give me tips as well. Also I'm pretty sure the wrong foot pivots when you throw your 3's. :-/

Seems like some of me 3s looked great... and some looked awful. I think the ones off the upper cuts looked surprisingly good then other were kinda forced. My jabs kinda coming a long but yea I am quite rusty and got a lot to work on. Thanks for the feedback.

The ones I specifically noticed were around :30. It looks like your back foot pivots instead of your front.

Oh the ones off the jab? Yea I see it now. I am used to doing them in the basic 1-2-3, which basically sets you up to pivot correctly.

You drop you left right after you throw a jab.. Bring you jab back fast and high.

Good way to improve your form is slow shadowboxing in the mirror..

Watch yourself and see where you defense is open.

Have your mitt holder hold mitts in more realistic positions the 1-2-3 should be closer together.

Pretty good for your experience

I was also going to mention the person working mits, but I figured he knows more than me. It seemed like he had to throw is 1-2's in a ridiculous crossing motion that wouldn't be accurate in a fight.

cc,

Yeah, I believe so. I think I start training again soon, so hopefully I can get footage soon,

is this just about training or general discussion on stand up fighters ok as well? there's a lot of awesome Muay thai fighters and kickboxers casual fans won't have heard of but would prob really like if they knew a bit about them.

My friend holding that pads has way more experience then me, but that doesn't necessarily mean hes a expert at holding the pads, I just don't know either haha. I see what you guys are saying about how hes holding them for the 1-2-3s, sometimes they felt great sometimes awkward. I am going to get back into some legit boxing classes soon, got on on Thursdays, maybe I will film another clip with my actual coach soon. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Awesome stuff. Pretty damn quick. Obviously a lot more advanced stuff then what I am doing. How big are you btw? Either you are quite big or that guy is a smaller guy. I think you said he was a lighter weight legit fighter before but I cant remember.

how do you guys hold the mitts. I have gotten pretty good at holding them, I do it for people pretty frequently.

I use the style like the guy in the video. catching 1's and 2's with my right hand then hooks with my left( I am right handed)

its pretty nice because you can get some work yourself holding mitts because you are in a fighting stance already. It seems more natural and better imo.

I kind of like the idea of hitting the same pad with 1-2, looks more natural, you can kind of see me crossing to much in my video. I just did some lifting with my Russian boxing coach, hes back in town (comes here for work) and is going to put some classes again. I broke a PR for Deadlift haha. Might put the video up in a bit.

Wow I thought this thread had died.

I know injury talk is boring, but have you guys ever kicked somebody's knee and totally ****ed up your shin? Did it a couple of weeks ago and it hurt but not enough to stop what I was doing, although it was a bit sore for a few days afterwards. Did it again last night but was a harder kick this time. Soon as I put my foot back on the floor I fell over and couldn't get up for a few minutes cos of the pain. It's swollen up and I'm having trouble walking today so probably going to have to rest it for a week or so. I know your shins are supposed to harden up over time, but this is the muscle to the outside of the shinbone. Can that get used to taking blows like this? Is damaging it early on in my training going to mean more recurring injuries?

I've fought 4 college persons at parties/college halls/train station with a 3-0-1 lifetime record, which was mostly stand up fighting. No vids. Also some Muay Thai.

Any chance you can upload some sparring clips (after the fights have gone down if you're concerned)?
