Also, nice pull - def worth to post on internetz.
ty for the good words
MB's nomenclature is definitely less intuitive than the others' but it's not *too* bad outside of the S-chassis stuff
C class is your compact. Think Honda Civic or Lexus IS, though it is tangibly bigger than either. The 2013 C-class has an amazing interior now, go build one with the sport package and you'll see what I mean. so nice.
E is the midsize. Subaru Legacy, Audi A6, Honda Accord.
The S class is daddy. This is what Persian ballers roll around in. (7 series, A8)
CL - S class coupe. I can't believe there is a market for enormous coupes but there it is. (competes with nothing cuz its so wtf)
CLS - "4 door coupe"(look a the roofline) that is based off of the E-class. Essentially little more than a cool looking E class with an enormous price premium.(competes with Audi A7 and BMW 6 grancoupe)
slk is their entry level roadster, SL is their beast roadster
Both MB and BMW use part-time AWD vs full time. The 328i sedan *just* got a new model for this year so if you were going new this is something worth considering. The sedan makes 240hp and gets something like 34mpg highway. Maybe 32 I can't remember. Either way that's a **** ton of power and a **** ton of MPG. I've driven the same motor in a much heavier 5 series and definitely had more than enough power. Compare this to an IS250 which makes probably right around 200hp and it's rated at 27mpg hwy. Pretty incredible difference.
Oh, and the BMW is a bigger car. 8)
EDIT: Also probably worth mentioning that an all-new C class is in the works for probably '14 or maybe '15. It isn't nearly as dated as the IS(also due for a new model for '14) but if you want that "all new" you might feel a little scorn in a year or two. Either way, get ready for that cuz refreshes and new models never stop and I guarantee if you buy a brand new MB you're going to become somewhat of a car guy.
Also some people would rather have the last year of a model than the first year of a new model. The bugs and kinks of a model have mostly been worked out by the final year. YMMV
