Tell the doctor about the pop for sure - that could be something serious.

A herniated / slipped vertebrae disc.

Stay away from any kind of lifting whatsoever.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

fwiw, when I herniated my disc, I never noticed a pop. I think some of them cause a pop though.

If it is something serious and you want to do everything you can to make it better - read my log from ~ the beginning of June this year and buy the book Low Back Disorders by Stuart McGill. Its a long, difficult read, but it is the best book on the low back there is.

That will be up to your Doctor and you. This is not something you want to apply the "man up" thesis to.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I understand. I'm talking about in typical cases? Is it something that will heal on its own?

How long until I will be able to sit upright in a chair without pain?

I don't want to give you any false hope, but a similar thing happened to me 20 years ago the very first time I tried to deadlift. Brutal pain to the point I couldn't even breathe without it hurting. Like a complete ****ing idiot I went to a chiropractor, and $86 later it was even worse.

Later that evening my aunt came by with some Relafen samples from the Doctor's office she worked at. 20 minutes later the pain was gone, and it never returned. I didn't mess around with deadlifting again until a few years later, and I sure as hell didn't round my lower back anymore.

I am hesitant to post this as could come off as irresponsible attempt at dispensing medical advice, but you might want to look into before going under the knife. Hopefully you'll get lucky like I did.

guy i was working in with said he thought i held the bar pretty far down on my back even for LBBS. he said it looked like it was a few inches lower than it normally would be. anything wrong with that if it's comfortable for me?

5/3/1 question: Are there assistance exercises in the deload week or is it just the main lifts and you're done?

you can play it by ear. i think he recommends main lifts and you're done. My plan is no deadlifting at all and doing some assistance stuff to bring up weak points (upper back).

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Squatting once a week already feels way too less, so squatting on the deload week with no assistance will feel like a light jog. I don't want to go TOO easy on myself, but I also don't want to hamper recovery. YKWIS?

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Pretty sure Wendler recommends doing assistance lifts at 50% as well. I can confirm later (paper version of the book) if you want.
