Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Does 5x5 include 5x5 DLs? If so, lol.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I vaguely remember that 5x5 is ramping sets rather than 5x5 sets across.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I seem to recall that the Strong Lifts beginner program is 5x5 sets across (1x5 for DL), and Madcow intermediate 5x5 is ramping sets.

So i gave the 20 rep set a crack yesterday. I can see why they have the reputation they do. I did 225x20, where I had completed 315x5x3 the previous workout. In hindsight, this was possibly a little too low, but was still a very interesting experience on reps 15+. I was glad I had someone else counting for me, and it was surprisingly hard just trying to stand between reps sucking in as much air as possible with the bar on your back, and then holding your breath tight during the actual rep when your body is telling you to breathe. I was told the form was fine, but I can see how it could break down - it feels basically impossible to concentrate on anything by the last few.

I think it's something i'll try to do every few weeks, and try to video capture the next one.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I'm going to try 225x20 (I think I can do it), but I don't know when's a good time that doesn't interfere with current programs.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Why you guys all trying to do this 20 rep squat thing? Just for the novelty or is there some kind of endurance benefit?

Also, if I were to go for it what do you think I should try, 225 as well? My best 3x5 is around 330-340.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

For me it's mostly novelty. I personally don't see any applicable endurance gain from it. It likely won't help me become a better distance runner, for example.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

It's apparently an old school routine, there is some discussion on the Starting Strength forum. Im interested in it for the mental toughness building aspect, something that I suspect I lack, and try and build some intensity when it comes to lifting.

I'd go a bit higher than 225, im going to try 245 next time so i can talk with Jesus, and my best is 315. Read somewhere that the weight is probably going to be around 80% of 1RM.

Apparently it's mostly hypertrophy.
