Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

1. changing your dietary habits to include more fiber should help, start there

2. If by effective you mean for losing weight, then yes.

2.1 Same as above.

3. Sodium intake and fat loss isn't correlated afaik

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Here's a noobish one:

What's the best way to recover quickly when you're out of breath? Are there any "tricks"? Does breathing through your nose make any difference? Slow, long deep breaths or just try to breathe normally?

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Haven't really been to this site in a while (stopped going to the gym because I'm barely recovering from 4-5 fencing practices a week that I have now), but here's a noob question:

This morning I was kinda hungry so I cooked up 5 eggs and 5 strips of bacon for breakfast. I put that into daily plate to see the calories, and I noticed the cholesterol just from the breakfast alone was something like 4 times the daily recommended amount. What's the deal with eggs, if a single egg is basically your daily allotment of cholesterol?

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Basically, eggs have lots of good stuff in them and dietary cholesterol isn't as big a deal as it's made out to be.

Quote:
...there tends to be an idea that dietary cholesterol intake is a primary determinant of blood cholesterol levels when, simply, this isn’t generally the case. Certainly a percentage of people seem to be sensitive to dietary cholesterol intake (in terms of how their blood cholesterol responds) but, in the majority, dietary cholesterol intake per se has very little impact on blood lipid levels.

So my upper left arm (tricep) has been been randomly pulsing/twitching the last two days and its sorta freaking me out (when it gets going it is quite visible....) (did go to the gym this afternoon and nothing felt wrong while lifting)

Anything to be conserned about? (gotta go to doctor for something else tuesday so I suppose I can ask then aswell).

fwiw, I've been working with someone who started too weak to press the bar. My gym has fixed barbells that range from 10kg to 20kg.

I've also seen people in like aerobics classes and sh*t using small, adjustable bbs.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

My gym is suitably ghetto and doesn't have any fixed weight barbells.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

OK guys,

I've been on starting strength for about 2 months now. Started with real low weight on everything and built from there just to try to avoid injury. My Squat started at 95 lbs, and I basically kept adding 5 lbs per lift day until now. Last Friday I did 205 and got up all 5 reps all 3 sets. Today I went to 210 and failed the final rep of the last set. A few of the earlier reps were tough to get up, but I maintained form and got them up, but on the final rep I was just spent and couldn't get it up.

What do I do now? Should I attempt 210 again on Wednesday or should I deload to like 190 and rebuild up from there?

For other information, I'm 6'3 252 lbs (started at 270 when I started SS 2 months ago) I'm eating at a slight deficit. I try to get as much protein as possible, but I'm usually eating between 100-125g per day. Doing it for weight loss/building muscle, I don't really have a timetable here, I realize it's a long process and I still have a long way to go.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

eat more protein and do 215. or 210. it doesn't matter that much. i'd think you can do 3x5 at 215 if your WIM is good.

and i think Rip says try it 3 times before a reset? i forget.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Add 5 lbs man. Take a little bit longer between sets, and WIM. Increase protein. You should be able to get it.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

zimmer,

what blackkeys said. If every set felt shaky and you were missing depth, then just repeat, but 14/15 is generally a bump up. Do not deload yet. That's too much WIL. Protein. Sleep. lots of sleep.

You've made great progress on a deficit. I've never really done any serious weight loss while lifting, so I wonder where your "wall" will be.

as for rage, I endorse saving some of it for the final set. Sometimes I would overly rage on set 1 and be really spent by set 3. Being a bit more calm for the first two sets is pretty bad ass, and then let it rip for set 3.

When I ran track and field and needed to catch your breath sooner or you were extra winded here is a trick I picked up.

Interlock your fingers on the top of your head, then when you breath out, suck your stomach in...when you breath out...push your tummy out...do the opposite movement then you normally would when you breath. Works IMO
