Unless you partition at like 88/12 in favor of LBM, yes gaining weight is going to eventually cause you to lose your abs.

Until the last week or so I hardly ever drank soda, so my caffeine intake was zero as far as I know. The last week I've been drinking a glass or 2 of caffeinated soda w/dinner so I don't feel like napping afterward and I've been drinking soda before/during work. I just bought 8 red bulls and I intend to continue drinking a glass or 2 of soda w/dinner and drinking a red bull before work every night. So far I have felt great. What sort of tolerance am I going to develop? Is 2 glasses of soda and 1 red bull/day a moderate enough intake that I can continue cashing in on this gravy train long term?

I used to drink energy drinks fairly regularly, and was astounded by the tolerance I developed to the caffeine. I've never drank more than one in a day before, but they started losing their 'buzz' of the caffeine high and I was usually fairly relaxed while drinking them and could sleep quite easily within a few hours of drinking them. I stopped for a few years, and now they have a pretty significant effect on me again. So, the effect will probably be short term for you, but if you quit for a bit I'm sure you'll lose the tolerance again.

I take about 3:40 between my bench sets and today during my second set I only managed 4 reps, so for the third set I took probably 5 minutes rest and managed to get 5 reps. Should I make 4:30 to 5:00 rest between sets the norm? Five minutes seems like forever of a break considering when I started I was taking about 2:30.

Take as long a break as you need to. They will get longer and longer.

Wrt = with regards to.

ETA: totally agree with thremp that johnny pain reflects very, very poorly on Rip. Unless it's a giant Lyle troll, in which case it's awesome.

Try to start a proper weight training program instead. That said if not doing bodyweight exercises like push ups, dips and pull ups is better than nothing at all.

Doesn't have to be that extreme. I have gained about 25 pounds since I started training and still kept visible abs. /shameless brag.

Is it advisable to start learning power cleans immediately or progress through hang cleans/high pulls/other to power cleans to nail the technique properly?

Doing rows instead of PCs ATM, and I'm sure this is pretty negligible, but should I be doing 1 work set ala DLs or 3 sets like usual or 5x3 like PCs?

3x5 typically for Pendlay Rows. A lot of people here do Kroc rows which are one-arm unilateral rows done with high reps and fewer sets. But I'd just do Pendlay Rows.

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

i have a question. i play some hockey now, and it's really taking a toll on recovery. the weights i am using are not heavy yet, 165 SQ, 150 bench, 225 DL, but still. i was thinking of adding a rest day after my hockey day before doing the next workout. so i'd lift, play the next day, rest, lift. essentially i'd move the 2-day rest in SS to either tuesday, thursday, or friday. usually just once a week, but could be twice. good idea or bad?

another question, should i try same post-WO nutrition after hockey as with lifting? namely chocolate milk with 2 scoops of whey.

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

You should probably consider lifting twice a week instead of three times to accommodate games/practices. Additionally... while I hate to recommend him, Mike Boyle trains a lot of hockey players and focus on unilateral work is probably pretty beneficial given the demands of the sport.
