re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****
I'm thinking about going all the way down to 1.25 lb increases on the press/pendlays/bench and 2.5 lb increases on squat/dead before resetting. Should I do this? If not, how small should I go?

Don't do it.
For a long time I thought I had to go this route (1.25/1.25/2.5/5) but I was, wrong I just wasn't eating enough.
Some people have to eat a LOT to sustain SS style gains. Some people don't have to eat all that much.

Yeah I wouldn't do it. Look at me I just made a 25 pound jump in squats today (that's the last shameless bag I'll make today, at least it's related)
You just gotta want it more.

For the press, bench, and power clean, sure. I wouldn't do anything less than 5 lbs for the squat and DL.

Maybe eventually, but he's only pressing 110. I didn't check the other lifts. I strongly suspect he can do at least 2.5 pound jumps if he eats enough.

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****
hey,
im a 150 lb gentleman with a really ****ty diet and i am not really in good shape anymore. i have a couple of questions about getting into good shape.
1) i go to school and have a meal plan. what kinds of foods should i be eating? are subs (kind of like subway) ok? i'm guessing i avoid pizza (bc of all the grease/cheese)? i know pasta is generally good... what about steak and cheese?
2) i ran cross country in high school and was in fairly decent shape then. i would like to start running again. i know a pretty decent amount about running so i don't need much help with how to get back into running, but moreso how to get into running and weight training (which i've only done briefly a couple of times) at the same time. is it a good idea to just start to do both of them at once?
3) regarding weight training, what's the best way to get into it? i'm basically a pussy in the gym and can't put up much weight at all, especially with my left side. what kind of work-outs should i start with?
4) if there is a better place for this stuff, please let me know. i figured all my questions fit the "beginner" category.
thanks

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****
physics Q: are there any changes in force if the plates spin (about the bar) as you lift?
i was watching a FS vid in kidcolin's log where a plate was spinning and was reminded of times i've had plates spin as i did lame exercises like barbell curls or skull crushers and it felt like it was more difficult than it would have been if the plates weren't spinning. is that effect real or imagined?
edit: after thinking about it, it's probably that some of my force was being exerted into twisting the bar (without gaining any upward momentum like you might if the plates were fixed) rather than moving the weights. i would guess that this is possibly significant with silly wrist-intensive exercises like curls, but insignificant with straight up and down moves like squats and bench.

I was doing 2.5 for the squat the past couple weeks. Came to the conclusion it's retarded since they're gonna be hard as **** no matter what, and if 2.5 lbs is the difference then F it, time for a reset or new programming.

1) Set a caloric goal and a rough macro breakdown. What you should be eating is obviously intimately related to your goals (see below). From your thoughts I'd say you're pretty clueless about diet though - check out the articles on bodyrecomposition.com for a better base understanding.
2) No, you can't run lots and do resistance training at the same time. If you want to get stronger, it's generally adviced to do a novice program (like Starting Strength) first. You can do some running, but lots of both at once will affect your recovery.
3) http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi..._Strength_Wiki. Get the book (and I recommend the DVD as well). You sound like a prime candidate for eating lots, aka Rip's GOMAD.
4) You're in the right place

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****
re: deadlifts
what is proper protocol for a set of 5? do you touch and go, or do you let the bar come to complete rest for a brief reset, and then begin the next rep?
i've always done the latter, however, now i'm at a gym that has hex plates instead of round. if you've ever tried to deadlift with hex plates, you'll know its a huge pain to completely drop the bar because it wont stop directly where you put it down, instead trying to go to its flat side
so i dont know what to do.. same problem with power cleans, but maybe ill just do hangs for those

re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****
Cool. I'm already using 1.25 lb jumps for the press and it's working well but I'll only go to 2.5 on pendlays/bench and 5 on squat/dead.
